twice a year the mendocino Coast audubon society takes a trip into the wild blue of our beautiful Pacific. Pelagic birds,
sometimes rare species, can only be seen off shore. Mammals such as dolphins and whales, too.
M endocino county’s immense western “back- yard”, the Pacific ocean,
“extends out two hundred miles,” according to Robert Keiffer. “so, there is actually more surface
area of ocean waters than terrestrial land.” Richard Hubecek calls it “a different world.” dave Jensen says
“it’s a neighboring realm…a strange foreign land.” charlene McAllister says it’s “so foreign, especially when you get out of sight of land.”
if you’re a typical “landlubber” you don’t venture out on that wide blue ocean. there it is...and we take it for granted. We might think of the fruits of the sea; fish, abalone, crabs and other things we eat. or maybe we’re aware, because of the two Whale Festivals on the coast, of the whales, dolphins, seals and other creatures that live on or in the ocean.
Ah, but there is another realm above the ocean yet no less tied to it; the wide blue sky. Within that expanse pelagic birds lead their lives. Pelagic means “of or pertaining to the seas or ocean.” We’re going on a Pelagic trip, a journey, a voyage, an excursion into that foreign territory to meet the birds (and mammals) that live there...
Days sparkleuntil Becky Bowen moved to the coast and settled on the edge of the sea she didn’t know
much about birds. “i got to this late in life and wish i’d gotten there sooner,” she says. Her love for shorebirds led her to organize, and get grants for, save our shorebirds; citizen science at its best.
she’s gone on annual pelagic trips for eight years. “i love birds and want to learn everything; to know everything. the days always sparkle out there on the ocean. i don’t know about sea birds. the [trip] leaders are so good at talking about things, answering questions, they don’t leave you guessing. they’re so patient and very kind. they’re not ordinary bird watchers: they’re the rock stars of the coastal bird world. so there’s always somebody to help me know what i’m seeing. Many of these leaders are from Humboldt state and they know their sea birds. Ron LeValley is a favorite leader because he loves the sea and lets us know what’s going on out there with everything from weather to mammals to fish.
“i’m not really comfortable on a boat,” says Bowen. “i put aside my fears because i just have to see what’s out there. it’s enriching.”
Bowen isn’t sure if she’s “bird nerd”. that’s someone who is obsessed with everything to do with birds —“bird nerds’ll dive into a book and live there. it takes all kinds of birders. there are the ‘combat birders’ working on ‘life lists’ and ‘county lists’,” Bowen explains.
Keeping lists is crucial for some, not at all important for others. Keeping lists gets some birders out there, locally, nationally and internationally, year around.

“i always learn something, always have a good time and always see something that makes me appreciate our incredible ocean, although my favorite experience had nothing to do with birds. We were surrounded by four orcas. they were so close i looked right into their eyes; it was magical. it gave me goose bumps for a week.”
another worlDsometimes it’s a simple thing that gets people
interested in birding. Richard Hubacek says it’s all his wife’s fault since she made the mistake of giving him a bird feeder as a gift in the late 1970s.
“i’d only gone on a couple of pelagic trips before moving to Mendocino six years ago. i think that’s because other Audubon groups i belonged to didn’t sponsor them. When i found out that Mendocino coast Audubon and Peregrine Audubon, inland, sponsored at least two trips a year, i jumped at the chance. Why?
Because it’s another world out there! it’s a chance to see birds that you can never see from the shore.
“it’s a challenge sometimes staying balanced enough to get your binoculars up and on a bird, let alone identifying the bird, but it’s worth it. especially when a rare seabird shows up. that’s also the fun of a pelagic trip, you never know what’s going to be out there. the highlight of my trips so far has been the short-tailed albatross that was found last May. Also the time we had a pod of orcas around the boat.”
science anD enthusiasm the scientist and the enthusiast can be heard when talking with Robert Keiffer. interested
in birds since he was five years old, an ornithology class at Humboldt state university made him a serious birder.
With a bachelor of science degree in Wildlife Management from Humboldt state unversity, Keiffer has worked for a variety of u. s., state and Mendocino county entities. For twenty-seven years he’s been at the u.c. Hopland Research and extension center (twenty years as superintendent). “i’m the Mendocino county compiler of records and sub-regional editor for the county for North American Birds quarterly publication,” he says.
Keiffer was the founder of the Peregrine Audubon society in ukiah in the 1980s which has flourished and grown in great ways.
He’s been on twenty or so pelagic trips off the Mendocino coast. “ocean waters can be divided into two birding spectrums,” Keiffer explains. “nearshore encompasses shallower waters close to the shoreline; from shoreline to a mile to a few miles out, and true pelagic waters which are over deep waters and include deep canyons.
“in the birding world, there are certain areas or territories of interest to birders. some keep north American lists, or American Birding Association lists, state lists, county lists, or backyard lists.”
Ron LeValley tells us that “most of our northern fulmars in the north Pacific are fairly dark, so these pale birds are not so usual. Some years they are very common and some years they barely show up.” Ron LeValley photo.
A NeighboriNg reAlmMendocino coast audubon Pelagic triPs
Story by AndArin ArvolA
LeValley’s all-time favorite bird is the short-tailed albatross. it was life-long dream of forty years to see one and he did, last year.
Another memorable experience was feeding a huge pod of white-sided dolphins under the boat. equally memorable, the year they spotted eight species of whales and dolphins, including a sperm whale and a humpback — highly unusual and spectacular.
“the birds and mammals are indicators of what goes on in the ocean by what shows up and in what numbers. We keep track of data for general information on the health and changing conditions,” he explains.
“For instance, with global warming, there are more and more sightings of bottle-nosed dolphins in northern california. the same with Risso’s dolphins, they follow the Humboldt squid.
“twenty years ago we never saw blue whales. now we see them every year; it’s neat to see them, to know that the population of the largest animal on the planet is recovering because of conservation efforts to save them,” LeValley concludes.
nuts anD bolts of a pelagic tripKaren Havlena is the coordinator of the pelagic trips. she has advice for those interested in
an ocean-going experience. “this is not a whale-watching trip, there are plenty of those that just go out for a few hours.
this is usually an eight-hour trip,” she informs us. Reservations need to be made early. the telstar boat can hold twenty-two to twenty-three
people “sometimes i get questions like, ‘Will luncheon be served?’ We provide lists of what should be brought and what can be expected.
“We draw the birds by chumming, a technique that’s a very smelly process. We used to cut up fish thrown in the ocean; now it’s cod liver oil and menhaden oil (from a north Atlantic fish) that is dripped on the ocean,” Havlena says. “you definitely have to wear rubber gloves! the smell draws gulls that follow the boat which act as a signal to other birds.”
Havlena adds, “Hard-core birders go on the trips because they want to see new species. i’m one of them. you never know what you’ll see and get to check off on your ‘county’ or ‘life’ list. We saw a short-tailed albatross, this bird came from Japan; we may never see another one.
“A pelagic trip is not for everyone. it can be intense. Going on the boat is like exercising all day. Because the boat is rocking you have to move to compensate for rolls.
“i take seasickness medications for two days prior to a trip so i don’t get seasick. i keep occupied with chumming, it’s entertaining to me.
For Mendocino county, the accepted coastal waters extend out two hundred miles. so, there is more surface area of ocean waters than terrestrial land on which to look for and count birds. some rarities can only be found in far-from-shore regions, such as Parakeet Auklets which have been found seventy to two hundred miles from our shore.
there have been pelagic birding trips off the Mendocino shores since the 1980s. currently there are fall and spring trips hosted by the Mendocino coast Audubon society. shearwater Journeys, a professional bird-watching pelagic enterprise, puts on from two to five annual trips.
Peregrine Audubon obtained special-funding to search the waters and gather data, during a couple of months, where little or no information existed before.
“Mendocino county has over 410 species of birds documented and accepted including four species of albatross. there are fourteen species of shearwaters and petrels, including the endangered Hawaiian petrel and four species of storm petrels.
“Any pelagic trip is a crapshoot with both the birds and the sea conditions. i’ve seen trips where birds were constantly in numerous numbers and others where few birds were seen. other trips with over a thousand dolphins, and others where almost no cetaceans are observed.
“some trips the water was so calm twenty miles out that i have a photo of a Pacific white-sided dolphin leaping out of the water with a perfect mirror-image reflection in the water. i’ve seen the water so rough that the captain cut the engines to an idle at the second buoy and we literally surfed all the way into noyo Harbor. there have been fifteen-foot swells that can make the typical boat sink into troughs where one cannot see the horizon, and then lift you up on top of a swell where you think you can see the world—all of which takes either lots of sea-sickness medications or a very strong stomach!
“We have one of the richest waters in the world as far as sea life goes…due to the nutrient-rich upwelling that feeds the food chain. Going out on a pelagic trip out of noyo Harbor is like opening presents under the christmas tree to me; you never know what surprises you may find!
“i could go on and on and on…,” says Keiffer, both scientist and enthusiast.
love of the seaRon LeValley, a professional biologist, has been on pelagic trips worldwide for about fifteen
years. “i love being on the sea,” he smiles. He’s a pelagic trip leader and usually goes twice a year unless he’s traveling. “if someone
wants to look at pelagic birds they can’t just charter a boat, but with a group it’s fun and exploratory.”
Pelagic birds live their lives at sea, sometimes aloft six or seven years, and only come to shore to nest. LeValley explains that it’s their set of feathers that keep them warm and dry.
How do they survive storms? “they’re not necessarily bad things. storms stir up the ocean so there’s more food. And the birds are flying, not clinging to a rock; there’s nothing out there to bang into,” LeValley says.
their food supply is varied depending on conditions. “think of the ocean as millions of water balloons or bubbles with different amounts of food, salinity and organisms, in our area, nutrients are upwelling from the depths of cold ocean waters to the surface, then the plankton bloom; that starts the food chain. We’ve had two good krill years in a row. the area around cape Mendocino is rich because of the depth of water. think of it like the ‘grass’ in the ocean that everything gets to eat.
“the advantage for a sea bird is that it can follow those bubbles. the birds are good swimmers, flyers and can travel long distances.” For instance, the albatross, which nests on the Midway islands, fly here, to our food-rich waters, to feed and then return to Midway to feed their chicks. this is a couple of thousand miles and takes about a week! Pull out a map and check out the distances.
the Buller’s shearwater nests in new Zealand and flies a figure eight around the Pacific ocean.

“The pelagic cormorant is one of the first signs of spring,” Ron LeValley informs us. “They start getting their white rump spots in January—part of their breeding plumage. I also like their iridescence.”
Ron LeValley photo.
It’s still too early for them to lay eggs, but if pelagic cormorants have time to hang around and build nests, it means there’s sufficient food. Ron LeValley photo.

“since nobody knows what we’ll see, us birders take the opportunity to go out three or four times a year. sometimes we see many, many birds, but sometimes it’s boring for the lack of bird activity.”
Havlena reported to The Whistling Swan, Mendocino coast Audubon society’s newsletter, that on the september 2011 pelagic trip there were sixteen species of birds and four species of mammals.
telstarcaptain Randy thornton is the owner of the Telstar, the fishing vessel used for pelagic trips.
“the bird watching trips are some of the most interesting on the West coast. in less than an hour from the dock, we can be in areas that offer multiple species, which change throughout the year. some trips we see more than thirty-five different species of birds. this is due, in part, to several deep canyons and unusual temperature changes and currents. i have state-of-the-art electronics which help to record conditions for future reference,” captain thornton explains.
expect the unexpecteD“there really isn’t anything like pelagic birding because you never know what to expect,”
charlene McAllister tells us. “i’ve been on trips so crowded, you have to push and shove to see the birds. Mendocino coast Audubon keeps our trips to a comfortable number of people so everyone has a chance to see that elusive rare seabird, should one appear. even when we don’t see massive numbers of birds or rarities, there are marine mammals and, almost always, at least one whale to be admired.
“i don’t know if i’d ever gone on a pelagic trip if i hadn’t been invited. i’m glad i was. it’s such a huge ocean and so foreign, especially when you get out of sight of land. i know there are people who live much of their lives on the ocean but it’s daunting,” she observes. “there are no signposts, no trees, no buildings, none of the usual things to tell you where you are. you are in someone else’s world.
“these birds live their lives at sea. ordinarily no one would ever see them without going into their world. some live six to seven years at sea and never touch land. it’s magical,” she says enthusiastically. “i wonder: what has that bird seen, where has it been, what has it been through?
“i like to go for the unexpected. Look out there and see a sunfish. Look up and see an albatross. Being close to a humpbacked whale. see the dolphins skimming along on our bow—what are they thinking? they clearly seem to be thinking; enjoying their exuberance.
“you never know what you’re going to see. i’ve been on pelagic trips in Monterey, the Galapagos islands, Gloucester MA, Baja and, of course here. i’m glad i’ve gone, again because there’s no way you can see these things from land.”
who shoulD go on these trips?McAllister tells me that “there are several kinds of birders. some go looking for a particular
bird, a mega-rarity. they want to check that off on their list. in england they call them ‘tickers’ because they’re ticking off birds on their list. “At the other end of the spectrum are the folks who are just curious about what’s out there. they don’t really know. We do give them a list of what they’re likely to see but often they have no idea what it all means.
“then there’s the middle of the roaders, like me. if it’s a beautiful day we’re happy to see whatever shows up,” McAllister says with evident satisfaction.

Sat. 03/03–Sun. 03/04;Sat. 03/17–Sun. 03/18Whale Festival For a premier whale watching location along the Men-docino Coast check out the bluffs at Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park. The lighthouse was built on a point of land extending westward into the Pa-cific Ocean so that the third order Fresnel lens would be most visible to shipping on the hazardous coast of Mendocino. This same attribute makes Point Cabrillo a preeminent location from which to watch the annual
migration of the gray whales from the lagoons of Baja Mexico to their summer feeding grounds in the Arctic Ocean. In addition to a grandstand view of the annual gray whale migration, visitors can see tidepool organisms without getting their feet wet by visiting the 250 gallon saltwater aquarium at the Marine Science Education exhibit in the restored blacksmith shop. Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association (PCLK) volunteer docents will help visitors spot whales, and illuminate light station history and local culture with presentations near the lighthouse. A period museum showing how lightkeepers and their families lived in the 1930s will be open in the restored First Assistant Lightkeeper’s Residence. Activities for children and families will include a life-size gray whale jigsaw puzzle as well as games led by PCLK’s Education staff. The Mendocino Coast Audu-
bon Society will lead beginning bird identification walks in the morning each day of Whale Festival. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, our local lightkeepers, will offer lens tours for a donation as well as safe boating tips, equipment displays and more along with the U.S. Coast Station Noyo River.Weather permitting, docents will also lead walks to nearby Frolic Cove and relate the story of the Boston-owned clipper brig Frolic, wrecked off the cove in July 1850, bound from China to San Francisco with a valu-able cargo of Chinese merchandise for the Gold Rush miners and their families. The lighthouse gift shop will also be open with origi-nal artwork, fascinating books, and unique gifts. Hot drinks and cookies will be available for sale in the lighthouse lobby. Lunch from Julie’s Famous Food Cart will be available for purchase each day. Festival activi-ties are an easy half-mile walk from the parking area. Handicapped parking is available. Bring warm, wind-proof clothing. We have binoculars to share. The Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park is a unit of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The Light Station is managed by the Point Cabrillo Lightkeeper’s Association under a concession contract with California State Parks.A $5 per vehicle donation will be requested to support the PCLK’s educational programs. 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park, two miles north of Mendocino and six miles south of Fort Bragg. Take the Point Cabrillo Drive exit from Highway 1 and follow the signs. For a schedule of presentations and additional information, please visit www.pointcabrillo.org, or call the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce at 800 726-2780 or 707 961-6300.
ABOUT GRAY WHALESEvery spring, gray whales journey with their newborn calves from the protected lagoons of western Baja to their ancestral feeding grounds in the cold waters of the Bering, Chukchi and Arctic seas. The whales mi-grating past Point Cabrillo belong to the Eastern Pacif-ic gray whale population of roughly eighteen thousand to twenty-three thousand individuals. These figures vary year to year, but represent a strong recovery of the population since attempts to ban hunting of the grays were initiated by international treaty in 1937. The Eastern Pacific gray whales pass by Point Cabrillo twice, on their southward journey from December to February, and again going north between February and May. Newly pregnant females lead the northward mi-gration, followed by males, and the last to leave Baja are usually females with new born calves.

a neighboring realmthe story david Jensen spins could well have started as an old-fashioned tall-tale but this is our backyard. Jensen
is the President of the Mendocino coast Audubon society. He’s been on twenty-six pelagic trips, mostly from Fort Bragg, Bodega Bay, and san Francisco. He spent literally hundreds of days on the ocean as a commercial fisherman.
“it’s like the stories you hear about medieval europe or mountain villages in Asia. We live in neighboring realms only about three miles apart. yet we seldom if ever see one another. in fact many of us live our entire lives without ever venturing beyond that border. What a loss,” Jensen says. “When we do cross that short border we find ourselves in a strange foreign land, we recognize that these are birds, but we must ask our guides to tell us their names and explain their mysterious customs, for this is all new to us. “Of all the birds we see on a pelagic trip, by far the most impressive is the albatross. We may see more than one hundred on a particular day, but you get a special thrill when you hear that first cry—‘albatross!’”
Birds aren’t the only creatures in the realm. “sometimes the dolphins come charging toward the boat from all directions like poor village children running toward a stranger’s shiny car. it’s as if they call to one another— ‘Quick, there’s a boat. Let’s go see who they are.’ Whatever joy we have brought them by breaking the monotony of their watery world, it can be no greater than our joy as we marvel at their grace and power, thrilling to the sound of their explosive breath as they surface directly below us.
“When i get home after a trip, back to my warm house with its yard and trees, my mind wanders back to the birds we’d seen. i’m struck as if by surprise with the realization that they are still out there. they will be out there when i’m asleep and when i rise tomorrow. in fair weather and through the worst storms. they do indeed live in a different world than ours. And i am anxious for the next opportunity to visit them,” Jensen affirms.
As we’ve seen, pelagic birding can be intense. Being on the ocean for eight hours, even if you’re used to it, can be exhilarating on occasions or deadly boring. it’s for the novice (maybe only once), those who are enthusiasts who want to learn more, those that want to tick off yet another bird on yet another list, those who are schooled in science, and those with no formal training. it is, as david Jensen says, “another realm.” REM

Get Ready!
The better prepared you are, the more you will enjoy your pelagic trip.
Sorry, but we can’t accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, etc. Those with physical handicaps should know that the boat rocks back and forth for eight hours! That’s a lot of exercise. No children under the age of eleven years old will be allowed on board.
Length: Eight hours (meet at 7:00 a.m. for check-in & return at 3:30 p.m.). There is no going home in the middle of the trip.
Equipment: Binoculars and cameras only. No tripods or spotting scopes.
Clothing: Dress in layers; Wear waterproof boots or shoes. The Telstar has oblong portholes at deck level and the waves will splash cold, seawater across the deck during the trip! Also, wear tight-fitting hats—very important. Consider rain gear, even if it is sunny.
Food: Bring your own snacks and lunches, like crackers, pretzels, light sandwiches, mint candies, water, ginger tea or soft drinks. Avoid heavy, spicy foods and alcohol the day before the trip.
Sunscreen: It is very important to wear a good sunscreen and a head covering.
Seasickness: This is a long trip—always take medication prior to the trip (taking a dose the night before is a good idea). Prescription “patches” are available from a doctor.
“Mal de mer” sounds much better in French but al-most everyone can get seasick. Even experienced people, used to the ocean. Take preventative measures, especially if you’ve never been on the ocean. Don’t ruin your trip by not taking motion sickness medication.
Black-footed albatrosses can have a wing-span of seven feet.
