March 6, 2011March 6, 2011

The mission of the Catholic Campus Ministry at Penn State is to give witness to a Catholic Presence in University Life and to promote and sustain the well being of the whole Catholic Person. We welcome students, faculty, staff , resident community members, and alumni. Grounded in the tradition of the Church, Catholic Campus Ministry provides an environment and fellowship that challenge members to encounter the Living Christ and be transformed by His Spirit. Liturgies, retreats, service proj-ects, Bible studies, prayer groups, programs for Catholic critical thinkers, and other activities nurture our faith and open our hearts to hear God’s message for us today.

Feast of FaithSeasonal Changes for

the Liturgies of LentThis coming Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During this season of preparation for Easter, our churches look stark and simple—no fl owers at the altar, no festive banners or decorations. And our liturgies feel diff erent, too. The organ is quiet except to accompany the singing of the assembly. The Gloria, our Sunday song of rejoicing, is not heard except on solemnities, and we will not sing the Alleluia, our joyful acclamation of praise, until the Easter Vigil. “Alleluia cannot always / Be our song while here below,” says an eleventh-century hymn. “Alleluia our transgressions / Make us for a while forego; / For the solemn time is coming / When our tears for sins must fl ow” (Alleluia dulce carmen, J. M. Neale, trans.).

These changes in the liturgy will catch our attention, and make us eager for the festive outpouring of joy that will return with Easter. This year, may the stripped-away liturgies of Lent remind us to strip away what is not essential in our lives to make space for the crucifi ed and risen One, and thus to be ready to sing “Alleluia” once again when Easter returns.

Stations of the CrossPlease join us each Friday of Lent at 12:15pm (starting March 18) in Eisenhower Chapel for the Stations of the Cross. It will last approx. half an hour, thus allowing for a luncheon of “spiritual” food!

Fasting: One full meal plus two smaller meals which should not equal the full meal. No eating at other times of the day. Those between the ages of 18-60 are bound to fast. Pregnant/nursing mothers are exempt.Abstinence: No meat; those 14 years old and older are bound to abstain.

ORB Journeying Through the Desert As we enter the desert of Lent together, Jesus shows us that to live fully the life God has given us, we must obey His Commandments and follow the Holy Spirit. Just as we are called to care for the gift of our eternal life, we are also called to care for the gift of God’s creation. Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl supports agriculture programs in Haiti and around the world that teach farmers eff ective and ecologically sensitive growing methods which allow them to get the most out of their land while preserving it for future generations.

Vocation director Sister Marilyn Schauble invites women with a desire to experience communal prayer, celebrate meaningful liturgy, share values and insights, refl ect on life’s purpose, explore personal goals and seek God with others to come to Mount St. Benedict Monastery on April 15-17. Call Sister Marilyn at 814-899-0614 ext. 2424 or visit their website at www.eriebenedictines.org to register for the weekend. If you care interested but can’t make the weekend, ask Sister Marilyn about arranging another time to visit.
