PEOPLE GET READY 17.12.17

Getting on board is all about relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Key verse: 2 Corinthians 4:13 ‘It is written: “I believed; therefore, I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of

faith, we also believe and therefore speak.’ (In context; birthed in great struggle; see Paul leaning into what David

had learned and penned in Psalm 116:10).

It wasn’t long before ‘other gospels’ started to come in, after the Gospel, this gospel, was first presented. Galatians

3:1: Paul asked – ‘who has bewitched you’ – they had received the Gospel plainly; Colossians 2 - vain, deceitful

philosophies were coming in and taking people captive again. We must be captivated by the Word of God –

Hebrews 4:12 declares it is the Word that is living and active, able to make the distinction between what is flesh and

what is God! When presented with other gospels – what would Jesus say? What did He say? What is written? Jesus

Himself gave us this example in the desert when challenged.

1. IT IS WRITTEN

1. Mark 13:31: ‘… My words will never pass away’ If we have a wrong confession, our thinking is wrong;

because our hearing is wrong – Paul described us being washed in the water of the Word.

2. 2 Timothy 3:16: because ‘all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, for rebuking,

correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for

every good work’ (equipped for everything Father has asked us to do)

3. Psalm 119:105 (a lamp to my feet; a light to my path)

4. John 1:1-2,14: The Word became flesh and dwelt among us

5. 1 Thess 2:13: ‘received the Word as truth … which is at work in you who believe’

6. Psalm 119:11: hiding the Word in our heart that we might not sin against Him

7. Psalm 119:130: then entrance of His Word bringing light

8. Hebrews 4:12: the ability of the Word to make the distinction between flesh/spirit; carnal/spiritual;

sacred/common

The Word of God is precious; it will always be truth and can always be relied upon. Therefore, it is

extremely important what we believe, and think on.

2. I BELIEVE Process. We can change our thinking and accomplish what we formerly believed was personally

unachievable. Illustration: Roger Bannister/4-minute mile. Landy: ‘Frankly, this is beyond my capabilities;

someone may but I don’t think I can.’ What we believe is where we cap. Clearly this instance is not just

about thought as there are numbers of other things that need to be in place.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ‘taking every thought captive’ is where the belief process begins. Thinking; knowing;

faith; growing. And we know faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17.

We think something; we take the thought captive to what Jesus would say about it; we consolidate that in

the Word so what we think becomes what we know. ‘I think I can; I know I can’ – in faith, I know He can and

then I speak, that I speak.

Taking our thoughts captive also means not entertaining evil thoughts; nor harbour them. Matt 9:4.

The same attitude of faith that David had ‘It is written, I believe and therefore speak’ is why ‘we therefore

believe and speak.’ This attitude comes when we have been captivated by His Word. For all Paul’s

knowledge, all he wanted to know what Christ and Him crucified and the power of His resurrection. Jesus

Himself set His face like flint; resolute to the call.

3. THEREFORE, I SPEAK: Matthew 17:17-21. We can talk about the size, type of faith and what the mountain

means but what is imperative is that we ‘say’ to this mountain – in the saying, we see; confession precedes

possession and our confession is always critical – especially when we are not ‘seeing’ what we expect; we

must then keep our heart fixed on what God has said. When we remove obstacles, others can come on in

behind us.

What is written? Work with Him on it; consolidate the truth in the Word – faith comes – I know He can.

Consider Eleazar, Shammah, David (Goliath). When these came through, so did others. A time came to stand, and

they did. Know what is written, know what is right for now.

‘It is written: “I believed; therefore, I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and

therefore speak.’ 2 Corinthians 4:13 NIV
