PERENNIAL REPORTDear Friends,

It’s hard to believe we are a year away from celebrating 40 years in 2016! From organizing litter clean ups all over the city, to transforming underutilized spaces into neighborhood assets such as parks and community gathering spaces, to planting thousands of trees that provide Indianapolis residents and visitors with valuable health, safety and aesthetic benefits – you have grown KIB from a small department in former Mayor Bill Hudnut’s administration into a leading Indianapolis nonprofit. We owe you – as a friend and supporter of KIB – a debt of gratitude for your ongoing commitment to the important work we do each and every day.

Each year, thanks to you, KIB supports more than 500 community improvement projects with more than 20,000 volunteers. For the past four decades, you have enabled us to partner with neighborhoods, the public sector, and Indianapolis community groups and businesses to achieve our vision for a vibrant city, with every neighborhood landscape thriving and well, and its people empowered, mobilized, and devoted toward that vision.

We saw the new Urban Naturalist program start in 2015. From March through October, KIB hires 6-10 college students in the sciences field to plant and maintain native species in green infrastructure, including storm water planters and rain gardens, and connects them directly to work experience and relationships with local companies and utilities that could be future employers.

The Youth Tree Team is a diverse group of over 75 Indianapolis area high school youth employed annually to water and maintain thousands of trees planted by KIB each year. Youth participate in weekly enrichment activities, helping themselves grow as they help trees grow. 2016 will see the 10th anniversary of this program.

Whether it is neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers from around the city, or youth becoming stewards of their environment, KIB is proud of the result: a city defined by strong neighborhoods; inspired places; and a clean, flourishing environment. It is because of you, our supporters, who Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.

With gratitude,

David ForsellPresident Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS

COMMUNITY FORESTRY With the goal of building a thriving tree canopy in Indianapolis, KIB’s Community Forestry program planted 2,786 trees for 38 Indianapolis neighborhoods in 2015. KIB continues to strategically identify and engage neighborhoods with the greatest need for trees and utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to track the success and health of all KIB-planted trees. 91% of trees planted in 2015 were native, which benefits the local ecosystem and helps further ensure the survivability of trees planted. KIB commits to watering all trees planted in City right-of-way for three years to help ensure survival rates. KIB also enhanced its pruning efforts in 2015—pruning a total of 5,155 trees throughout Indianapolis.

YOUTH TREE TEAM Through the Youth Tree Team (YTT) program, KIB hired 83 Indianapolis-area, including, 65 high school-aged youth, as well as 18 college-aged youth leaders, to water and maintain nearly 4,000 trees planted by KIB over a seven-week period in summer 2015. The YTT program not only helped KIB with its tree maintenance needs, but also provided this diverse group of local Indianapolis youth with meaningful opportunities for summer employment, enrichment, and education—teaching them life and leadership skills, about the environment, caring for their community, and the potential and benefits of urban greenspaces. Eight YTT teams worked together to care for trees and collect litter at recent KIB tree planting sites. Along with daily work activities throughout the summer, youth participated in weekly enrichment activities including networking with green-collar professionals, learning financial management skills, and a college campus tour.

URBAN NATURALISTS From March through October each year, KIB’s new Urban Naturalists program hires six to ten college students in the sciences field to plant and maintain native species in green infrastructure, including stormwater planters and rain gardens, and connects them directly to work experience and relationships with local companies and utilities that could be future employers. A highlight of this program in 2015 has been not only the successful planting and maintenance of stormwater planters in the Fairfax neighborhood on the city’s Westside, as part of a pilot project by Citizens Energy Group, but the team’s interactions with the neighborhood residents have also led to a more positive response from the residents to the new stormwater planters.

YEARS WE’VE BEEN KEEPING INDIANAPOLIS

BEAUTIFUL

39VIBRANT CORRIDORS KIB partnered with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Downtown Indy to create painted mural artwork in gateway underpasses around downtown, in a civic-led initiative called Vibrant Corridors. Located under the I-65 overpass of Central Avenue at East 12th Street, the Pillars of Society mural was created in summer 2015.

COLLECTIVE IMPACT As a key leader and implementation partner in the Reconnecting Our Waterways (ROW) initiative, KIB has worked to improve communities along Indianapolis’ waterways for the past several years. We have secured donations to support watershed restoration projects, including a recent $49,400 grant awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) in July 2015 to support habitat restoration along Pleasant Run.

COMMUNITY GREENSPACE IPL Project GreenSpace is a partnership with neighborhood-based organizations to help eliminate blight and to revitalize public spaces, creating natural, beautiful, and functional pocket parks and greenspaces. The recently completed pocket park located at 28 North Holmes Avenue in the Hawthorne Neighborhood on the city’s Westside integrates a vibrant, creative, and repurposed piece of public art—a bright yellow 1964 Bonneville, installed vertically. In 2015, KIB launched the IPL Project Greenspace Alumni Club, which meets quarterly to share ideas on how to keep a solid volunteer base, care for the spaces, programming and partnership ideas, and best practices. This effort supports KIB’s focus on ensuring all new greenspaces and pocket parks created through the program are not only maintained, but utilized by neighborhood residents, for years to come.

KIB CLUBS KIB engaged five local schools through the KIB Clubs program in 2015, helping schools create outdoor classrooms and environmental clubs, to build the next generation of environmental stewards. KIB’s approach is unique in involving the youth in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the outdoor classrooms. A total of 158 students were enrolled in the Clubs at the five schools, and an additional 1,285 students were engaged through additional KIB staff presentations and outreach at local schools. Additionally, the outdoor classrooms created at each school impacted the 3,287 students enrolled at the five schools in the program. KIB staff worked with school staff, parents, and local community members to build strong leadership for each environmental club, and helped the teachers with training to utilize hands-on projects for curriculum-based environmental learning.
