Spain’s state broadcasting network announces it will no longer show bullfights
Spain’s leading broadcaster said Satur-day it will no longer show the country’s centuries-old tradition of bullfighting in order to protect children from viewing violence.Spain’s state network, RT VE, lists its new ban on transmitting bullfighting pro-grams under a chapter called «Violence with animals» in its latest stylebook and says it «will not broadcast bullfighting.»One of the reasons given by RT VE is that most bullfights start at 6pm or 7pm, and T VE director general Alberto Oliart said that meant they fall into children’s viewing hours - when violence to animals cannot be shown.«Children can view violence exerted over
animals with anxiety and we must there-fore avoid it by all means,» the stylebook says.The broadcaster has not shown bullfi-ghting in any of its programs for months, citing low audience ratings and budget problems over expensive outdoor loca-tions shooting.Now RT VE has confirmed it is termina-ting all links with an activity that many Spaniards revere as an art form but which others consider a cruel and archaic blood sport with no place in modern society.Furious fans accused the broadcaster of shunning a key part of Spanish popular culture.
Curbing climate changeWhy heat the planet? We can do something about it? What are the consequences of global warming?
In the atmosphere surrounding our planet, a number of gases (mainly water vapor and carbon dioxide) that produce the greenhouse effect. Masterplan to reduce the size of the government The president has announced a 23% cut in high-ranking positions and a reduction in the number of public officials in an attempt to cut spending and compensate the high public deficit, that is expected to reach 3,5% of the GDP.
Doing more and being better for less- this is the main idea of the new Catalan president, the centre-right nationalist Artur Mas. The president of the Generalitat said that he will reduce the number of advisers and high-ranking officials in the government by almost a quarter in comparison with the last executive of the socialist José Montilla.
Mas argues that the cuts will affect ‘all the political core of the government, the number of ministries, general direction and secretaries’. In particular, the number of high-ranking officials will be reduced from 177 to 136.
Artur Mas argued that some of the special political advisers and high-ranking officials were ‘not necessary’ so he decided to reduce them. Similarly, he asked all his ministers to be austere and avoid extra spending. After reducing the size of the core of the government, Mas intends to cut the spending of the departments and quangos
that depend directly on the executive to make them smaller and more efficient.
‘This big world of the public companies will be reduced substantially’, he claims. All these measures will be adopted to reduce the deficit of the Catalan government, that is expected to reach more than 3,5% of the GDP this year. Mas said that the deficit could be of up to 7.800 million euros, a higher figure than the one forecasted by the former president, José Montilla.
The Mediterranean railway corridor, linking Algeciras with Stockholm, must be a European priorityThe Spanish high-speed railway plan is mainly radial, with Madrid at the centre of all connections. The rich and indus-trial Mediterranean shore, lead by Barcelona and Valencia, have long campaigned for a Mediterranean high-speed passenger railway and a European-width freight railway to connect them directly to Europe. The new Catalan Minister for Territory and Sustainability, Lluís Recoder, while in Brussels, has criticised what he considers to be a ‘lack of commitment’ on the part of the Spanish govern-ment regarding this infrastruc-ture.
‘If they were completely convinced that this is a priority, they would have acted accor-dingly’, said Recoder during an event to promote the construc-tion of the railway and to push its inclusion into the main infrastructural priorities of the European Union. The minister said that there are other railway options that receive more attention from Madrid than the Mediterranean rail does. According to the minister, this ‘is at odds with the institutions and the business sector in Catalonia, Valen-cia and Murcia’.
Barcelona is the main harbour of Spain with Valencia as its second largest. Besides this, they are the second and third most populated cities in Spain. Catalonia and Valencia are two industrial centres; they produce more than 40% of Spanish exports. The railway connection with Central Europe for goods is therefore seen as a huge business and industrial priority in these areas. In addition, the passenger high-speed train linking both cities with Central Europe and Southern Spain is a strategic infrastructure that has been delayed by the Spanish Government.
‘The Spanish state has to believe in having a non-radial transport network’, Recorder said. ‘By pushing from the Mediterranean area or Europe, we could maybe change the Spanish minister’s mind and challenge the idea that everything has to go through Madrid’, he added.
In a similar stance, the president of Murcia, Ramón Luís Valcarcel and the president of the Valencian Community, Francisco Camps, urged the Spanish Government to recon-sider its infrastructural priorities. ‘Today, Europe needs more than ever to invest in productive infrastructures, and the Valen-cian Community, Catalonia, Murcia and Andalusia, which generate 50% of Spanish GDP, need a proper railway to facilitate the importation and exportation of goods’, argued Camps.
In contrast, the Spanish representatives in the event said that Madrid has ‘for a long time’ supported the idea of a Mediterranean railway. The general director of Transport, Manel Villalante, reminded assistants that ‘the minister for Transport clearly said in a meeting in Zaragoza that the Government would support the inclusion of the Mediter-ranean corridor in the European transport priorities, and it is working towards that’.
Despite this announcement in Zaragoza, the Mediterranean corridor has not yet been formally included in the list of EU infrastruc-ture’s top priorities.

Depuis le 1er janvier, le Dakar emprun-tant les routes d’Argentine compte parmi ses concurrents un petit noyau de cata-lans dont certains font partie des pilotes de motos les plus importants du moment. Qui sont ces Catalans? Pour les incondi-tionnels du Dakar, vous avez peut-être déjà entendu parler de : Marc Coma, Nani Roma, Laia Sanz, Jordi Arcarons, Gerard Farrés, Jordi Viladoms et Joan Pedrero.Laissez-nous vous présenter ci-dessous quelques-uns des plus attendus dans la compétition.
Marc Coma, un grand favori du Dakar :
Pour le double vainqueur du Dakar (2006, 2009) l’année 2010 a été très active, qui a très vite surmonté sa décep-tion du dernier Dakar (15ème) pour mener de front deux activités de grande ampleur. La saison de rallye-raid qu’il a terminé avec un titre, son quatrième, de meilleur mondial, grâce à des victoires
significatives sur le Rallye des Pharaons ou le Rallye Dos Sertoes.Sur les 4 premières étapes du Dakar 2011, Coma reste dans le trio de tête et obtient même à la 4ème étape, la pre-mière place au classement général.
Jordi Viladoms, sur les pas de Marc Coma:
Jusqu’alors équipier modèle au service de Marc Coma, voilà Jordi Viladoms qui endosse les habits de l’autonomie pour sa cinquième participation au Dakar (meil-leure place : 7ème en 2009). Engagé dans l’équipe Yamaha France en octobre, Jordi Viladoms découvre en urgence l’ambition et une nouvelle machine.
Depuis le début de la compétition, Vila-doms oscille entre la 13ème et la 9ème place du classement général.

Après La Jonquera, Girona lance son offensive commerciale de 20.000 m2
Les années 2010 sont décidément celles de la frénésie commerciale, en dépit ou à cause de la crise. Dernier avatar, la mairie de Girona prévoit d’adopter un nouveau plan urbanistique consacré au commerce, tout en veillant à la continuité de son acti-vité de centre-ville.Au moment même où l’ouverture des soldes, ce vendredi, a provoqué en Catalogne du Sud une razzia de consommateurs rarement observée par les commerçants, la Ville de Girona prépare une offensive commerciale. Dans le cadre d’un plan d’urbanisme dit “consolidé”, indépendant de la crise, mais plutôt conçu comme une solution à celle-ci, les services de la mairie ont communiqué ce même vendredi leur intention d’aménager une nouvelle zone de surfaces commerciales de 20.000 m2. Les préci-sions fournies par l’adjoint en charge des questions d’Urbanisme, Joan Pluma, stipule que le projet à venir, validé en conseil municipal ce mardi 11 janvier, “altera al mínim” le modèle commercial appliqué sur le périmètre municipal. Dans une exigence de qualité et de “proximité”, ce plan de développement s’étalera sur deux secteurs, Can Turon, un espace vierge du sud de la ville, et la Plaça Vila de Salt, située à proximité.
Ce nouvel espace, idéalement accessible depuis le centre-ville et la ville voisine de Salt, sera également situé à proximité de l’entrée “Girona Sud” de l’autoroute AP-7. La mairie de Girona, qui assure préserver pour autant le commerce établi depuis
�didats à l’installation dans ce nouveau pôle de consommation. Plus au Nord, la ville de Figueres a mis en place au début de la dernière décennie une stratégie commerciale, sous le label “Figueres Shop”. La Jonquera, dont la position géographique assure un flux constant de clientèle, ne dispose pas encore d’ombrelle commerciale, mais attire anarchiquement le chaland, sans concept de prestige, sur l’idée simple du bouche à oreille. Première commune de la province de Girona en matière de consommation, La Jonquera abritera en 2013 un village de marques à prix cassés, ajouté à sa myriade de boutiques et de services. Pour sa part, dans la partie de la région de la Cerdagne rattachée à la province de Girona, la ville de Puigcerdà a lancé en 2010 un plan de valorisation intitulé “Cerdanya Shopping enter”, conçu pour dépasser la crise.
Pas respecté les règles d’étiquetageQuasi 3 établissements et commerce alimentaire sur 4 des régions de Gérone, ne respectent pas les normes relatives à l’étiquetage de produits frais. C’est ce qu’affirme une étude réalisée en juillet dernier par l’ Agència Catalana de Consum (ACC), dans laquelle on constate que 71,66% des établissement géronais où se vendent des produits comme la viande de boeuf, le poisson frais ou les fruits et légumes, ne garantissent pas aux consommateurs l’information nécessaire que devrait contenir l’étiquette.Les commerçants ont l’obligation d’afficher sur le lieu de vente, les prix de vente, le prix des produits. L’obligation concerne tout produit exposé à la vue du public (vitrine, étalage, présentoir…)Les mentions devant figurer sur l’étiquetage ou à proximité des produits sont précisées pour la plupart des fruits et légumes bruts par les normes communautaires de commercialisation (à consulter dans la rubrique Réglementation par produit).Pour les produits non soumis à ce type de normes, la variété ainsi que l’origine du produit doivent être indiquées.

Aardbeving van 3,6 op Richter schaal bij GironaZondagochtend rond 7.00 uur trilde de grond in de provincie Girona even nadat een aardbeving van 3,6 op de schaal van Richter het gebied trof. Het epicentrum lag in Caldes de Malavella waardoor zo’n 6.500 bewoners van de streek gewekt werden door de beving. Er waren diverse meldingen bij de lokale politie nadat inwoners geluiden hoorden die leken op explosies, iets wat uiteindelijk de beving bleek te zijn. Volgens het Instituto Geológico de Catalunya kon werd de beving gevoeld in La Selva en Girona maar zijn er geen meldingen van schade binnengekomen. Wel hebben de politie en brandweer diverse meldingen binnengekregen.
Las cajas de ahorro moeten volledige openheid geven
De Spaanse spaarbanken, de zogeheten cajas de ahorro, moeten deze maand volledige openheid geven over de verliezen op hun vastgoedportefeuilles en slechte leningen. Op die manier hopen de Spaanse premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero en de Spaanse centrale bank internationale investeerders ervan te overtuigen dat Spanje geen Griekenland of Ierland is, en dat er dus zonder risico geld geleend kan worden aan Spaanse banken en de staat.
Volgens Zapatero is de aandacht van internationale beleggers volledig gevestigd op de crisis van de huizenmarkt, met als gevolg dat zowel de banken als de Spaanse staat alleen tegen hoge rentes geld kunnen lenen op de internationale kapitaalmarkten.
‘Daarom moeten de cajas hun kapitaalstructuur verbeteren en hun balansen op orde maken’, aldus Zapatero. Bovendien moeten deze spaarbanken ook gedetailleerd weergeven welke financieringsbehoefte ze hebben.
De cajas, die de helft uitmaken van de Spaanse bankensector, leenden jarenlang volop aan huizenbezitters, bouwer en projectontwikkelaars. Toen de vastgoedzeepbel uiteen is spatte, verkeerde een deel in grote problemen.Met de trein van Figueras naar Parijs in 7 uur en
25 minuten (i.p.v. 9 uur)De Franse hogesnelheidstrein TGV zal totdat Spanje klaar is met de aanleg van het AVE spoor, het traject tussen het Spaanse Figueras en de hoofdstad van Frankrijk Parijs gaan uitvoeren. Danzij de service van de TGV zal de reistijd in trein geen 9 uur maar nog maar 7 uur en 25 minuten gaan bedragen. De verbindingen van Figueras tot het centrum van Barcelona zullen verder worden uitgevoerd door normale Spaanse treinen. Dit laatste geldt totdat Spanje klaar zal zijn met de aanleg van hun eigen hogesnelheidsnetwerk tussen Barcelona en rankrijk.
Er zullen twee dagelijkse diensten gaan plaatsvinden, te weten vertrek Parijs om 7.20 uur en 15.20 uur en aankomst in Figueras om 12,47 uur en 20.48 uur waardoor men in Barcelona kan zijn om respectievelijk 14.46 uur en 22.45 uur. Vanuit Barcelona kan men om 9.00 uur en om 13.00 uur naar Figueras vertrekken om van daaruit om 11.06 uur en 15.02 uur richting Parijs te vertrekken en in de Franse hoofdstad te arriveren om 16.41 uur en 20.41 uur.
De prijzen van de treinkaartjes zullen tussen de 54,50 euro en 108.90 euro liggen. Wanneer men doorreist naar Barcelona komen daar nog eens tussen de 13,20 n 22 euro bij voor de Spanase trein.
Het stuk spoor geschikt voor de hogesnelheidstrein tussen Perpignan en Figueras is 44,4 kilometer lan en is inclusief de tunnel die meteen ook de grens tussen Frankrijk en Spanje is. Begin 2012 wil men klaar zijn met de aanleg van het spoor tussen Barcelona Sants en Figueras (inclusief het traject wat pal langse de Sagrada Familia loopt) waardoor Parijs nog op slechts 5 uur en 35 minuten van Barcelona verwijdert is.
Topkok Ferran Adrià opent nieuwe (betaalbare) tapasbar in BarcelonaFerran Adrià, hoofdchef van het wereldberoemde restaurant El Bulli, opende gisteren een tapasbar in Barcelona waar geen reserveringen voor worden aangenomen. Liefhebbers van de moleculaire gastronomie van de topchef kunnen gewoon binnenwandelen en iets eten voor een fractie van de normale prijzen.
De tapasbar heet 41 Grados en is gevestigd in het district Paralelo in de Catalaanse hoofdstad. Het menu bevat gerechten die lijken op die in Adrià’s restaurant worden geserveerd, waaronder crèpe van Pekingeend en marshmallow wolkjes van limoen en kokos.
Terwijl de kosten voor dineren in het vijf maal tot beste restaurant ter wereld verkozen El Bulli, kunnen oplopen tot 500 euro voor twee personen exclusief wijn, kost een maaltijd in 41 Grados veel minder. Er zijn al gerechten voor 7 euro verkrijgbaar.
Onderzoekscentrum
De Adrià-broers openen nog een tapasrestaurant in Barcelona volgende maand. Dit zal ‘Tickets’ gaan heten en wél reserveringen aannemen. Vorig jaar besloot Adrià El Bulli voor twee jaar te sluiten. Vanaf 2014 zal het heropend worden als een culinair onderzoekscentrum.
