V: In recent news we both noticed this attitude from human beings when confronted either with a disaster, like whhappened in 2011 Japan after the earthquake that caused a tsunami

In both cases even though confronted with an adversity human kind has been able to prevail, so for our monumendecided to do a monument for the Japanese citizens. Upon the creation of our mood board

K: there were several items that stood out such as location, and belief system being shinto or buddihism. Japanesare shaped by these two belief systems , and they both teach their believers that people shouldnt focus on whytragedy happened but on how they should proceed.

upon this we discovered the shinto belief that water is essential and reflects spiritual cleansing and even the sounwater is inhabited in temples and shrines all over Japan.

Buddihism beliefs focuses on meditation through the form of a pathway or sando , which are usually marked by ststairways and these pathways function as connecting an outside with front of the structure.

V: Moving forward with our design, we selected a location

after selecting a sketch we felt that the uplifting and the ramp as a pathway was our main concern to reflect the hperseverance. Our first form it was too direct and even though it did have components that we liked after critiqueconcept of a containerof water and a man made material were suggestion made.

V: Re-approaching the design Karen and I looked at various coastal efects and the diagrams were a source ofinspiration as well as the feedback that were given during critique.

V: these are the orthographix...as visible the opening that is made the the range of the highest waves from 26-28high to indicate the highest waves that happen during the tsunami and to indicate the perseverance people are higabove ground from this mark. the addition of the stairs was to provide the extra support in case you wouldnt beto climb up the ramp

these are japanese characters to the proverb that translates to AFTER THE STORM THE EARTH HARDENS

the visitors will be abut 30 ft high above the sea level to reflect perseverance as the view the ocean which thehollowness of the sturcture wil permit the viewer not only see at through but also hear the harsh splash of the wavwell as finding a surprise

the proverb that encourages to keep going and dont let disasters get in the way, and only those who have make ithe top will be able to experience this as well it will be visible when is low tide
