Oprah Winfrey is the highest-paid performer on television, the richest self-made woman in
America, and the richest African-American of the 20th century. Under her production company,
Harpo Productions, Winfrey has become a television pioneer, an editorial director, a producer
and actress, a satellite radio producer, a Broadway producer, and philanthropist. As of February2013, Winfrey's net worth is $2.7 billion.
While Winfrey's life has not been easy (Winfrey was sexually abused for years as a child by
numerous male relatives and family friends), she has become a hero and icon to women with
her perseverance and hard work. "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret," she said.
"Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work." Much of Winfrey's success
has come from her self-reliance and willingness to work around the clock.
In 1986, Winfrey launched the "Oprah Winfrey Show" as a nationally syndicated talk show.
Placed on 120 channels and with an audience of 10 million people, the show grossed $125
million by the end of its first year. Winfrey used her success to champion causes close to her
heart, including a campaign to create a national database of convicted child abusers. She
testified before a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of the National Child Protection
Act, and President Clinton signed the "Oprah Bill" into law in 1993, creating the national
database.

Oprahs success has not come easily, but rather as the result of a number of cr ucial factors:
A Goal-Oriented Focus: You become what you believe, says Oprah. You are where you are
today in your life based on everything you have believed. Oprahs unwavering belief in her
abilities is what drove her to focus all of her lifes energy on reaching her objectives. Focused ona career in broadcasting, Oprah ignored all other diversions until she had achieved her goals.
Once a successfultalk show host, she continued to diversify in areas within broadcasting.
Oprahs single-minded focus allowed her to concentrate all of hertime and energy into
achieving the life of her dreams.
The Ability to Overcome Diversity: Having experienced much abuse and adversity as a young
child, Oprah developed the survival instinct at an early age. She learned the lesson that if you
wanted to not only stay alive but also make something of yourself you had to fight. This would
well prepare her for theobstacles she would later face in the worlds of broadcasting and
business.
The Ability to Recognize and Seize the Opportunity: I dont believe in coincidences, says
Oprah. From hosting a talk show, to acting, to utilizing the Internet to bring her company
online, Oprah has listened to her inner voice and grabbed every opportunity she believed was
necessary to achieve her goals. She was not afraid to venture into the unknown or reinvent
herself through various media. Her success also lies in the opportunities she has turned down,
such as thousands of dollars worth of brand endorsements, which might have put her company
in jeopardy. Listening to hergut instinct has allowed Oprah to take advantage of numerous
opportunities, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed.
A Sense of Responsibility to Others: Early on in her career, Oprah asked, How can I be of
service? How can I use television as a service? Oprah has since demonstrated that social
consciousness can makegood business sense. Her dedication to the causes in which she
believes and thepassion with which she appeals to heraudience for support has set her apart
from other television personalities. Her desire to give back not only to her own community, but
also to communities around the world, has endeared Oprah in the eyes of the public.

broadcasting, she directed all her energy toward feeding that passion. It was her passion for

communicating with people and a staunch belief in her true calling, Oprah was propelled to
new heights.
What career women can learn from Oprah:
Sometimes it pays not to over plan things:Oprah claims not to be much of astrategist; rather, she asserts that divine inspiration, not strategic planning, is the key
to her companys success: I havent planned one thing ever. I have just been led by a
strong instinct, and I have made choices based on what was right for me at the time
(Allyne, 2008).
Demonstrate a strong work ethic:While Oprah worked as a news anchor she alsotook on the responsibilities as host of a morning television talk show. Throughout her
career, Oprah has never shied away from hard work, she welcomes it.
Dont be afraid to be an entrepreneur:Her entrepreneurial mind-set andwillingness to take risks has paid off by propelling her forward throughout her career.
She sought out opportunities as an actress, invested in start-up businesses, such asOxygen, an independent cable network for women, and most recently, launched the
Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
Create a moral-support network:Oprah created a cheering squad with peoplesuch as her best friend, Gayle King, and Stedman Graham, who helped her during
difficult and lonely times in her career.
Create a professional-support network: Over the years Oprah has built up aprofessional network and been able to reach out to some of the most successful
business people in the world for help or advice. In turn, she has also given back to
others such as helping Barack Obama with his political campaign for president.
Lead and inspire others:Oprahs leadership style demands that nothing be takenfor granted. I dont yell at people, I dont mistreat people, I dont talk down to people.
Treating people with respect is the most important thing to me. Its not just talk
(Allyne, 2008).

Oprahs thoughts are group into four general categories:Fear, Failure, Success andHumility.
1. FearChannel It
Thething you fear most has no power. Your fear of it is what has the power. Facing the truth
really will set you free.
Ms. Winfreys big break was an accident. An accident which Oprahs hard work and dedication
had more than adequately prepared her to exploit. Channeling the Roman Philosopher Seneca,
Oprah later characterized her lucky break by saying, Ifeel that luck is preparation meeting
opportunity.
In 1982, Oprah was the co-host of the local television news inBaltimore Maryland. As part of
their job search efforts, one of the stations producers created a montage tape of their work
and sent it to a number of major-market stations, including WLS inChicago.Coincidentally, one
of the on-air personalities on the tape was Oprah Winfrey.
The WLS executives were immediately impressed with Ms. Winfrey and asked her to audition
for A.M. Chicago, a glorified cooking show. Did Oprah know anything about preparing food on
live television? Heck no. Did this slow her down? Of course not.
It was natural for Oprah to be apprehensive about assuming an unfamiliar role in the USs third
largest media market. However, she balanced her trepidation with a lifelong desire to face and
conquer her fears, later stating, Ihave a lot of things to prove to myself. One is that I can live
my lifefearlessly.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, entrepreneurs are typically not blind to risk. However, they
tend to view what most people consider to be risky situations as opportunities to be
exploited. Oprah description of risk is typical of entrepreneurs

2. FailureRefuse It
Idontbelieve in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.
Oprahs biggest failure was ultimately her greatest success. Her WLS morning show was well
received from its outset. Within a few months of its launch, she was consistently beating PhilDonahue, the then-current national king of daytime television.
Her shows local success led to a meeting inLos Angeles with several ABC network executives.
The network owned Oprahs AM Chicago show, as it was created under the auspices of her
contract with WLS. Thus, in order to expand beyond Chicago, she needed to negotiate the
terms with ABC.
After a brief meeting, the ABC executives told Oprah, (paraphrasing), You have a great, local
cooking show, but it has no future beyond Chicago. Oprah was understandably disappointed.
Some young people would allow rejection by industry experts to short circuit their dreams.
However, Oprahs healthy balance of humility and self-confidence caused her to be undaunted
by the network executives poor judgment. In the midst of her disappointment, she no doubt
took the advice she has since shared with her fans, Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to
fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.
On the return trip to Chicago, Oprah realized that by rejecting her local show, the network had
effectively freed her from her contractual obligations, allowing her to own all aspects of her
show; from the studio, to the syndication rights, to the hiring and firing of the shows
employees.
Like all entrepreneurs, Oprahs career has included multiple failures.Nobodysjourney is
seamless or smooth. We all stumble. We all have setbacks. Itsjust lifesway of saying, Time
to change course. If you are not intermittingly failing, you are not trying hard enough. Oprah
encourages entrepreneurs to expand their comfort zones byDo(ing)the one thing you think
you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never
tumble are those who never mount the high wire.
One of Oprahs setbacks was the 1989 television showBrewster Place. The ratings were poor,
the writing was uninspired and Oprah did not have enough time or energy to devote to the
show. As such, she elected to change course, despite the fact that she had already been paid
a sizable bonus.

When she attempted to return the prepayment to ABC, the executives told her to,forgetit.
They were astounded, as no one had ever returned a prepayment. However, Oprah felt she had
failed to deliver a quality product. After ABC rejected Oprahs check, she suggested they give
the money to charity, which they subsequently did.
Oprah realized that failing is a part of succeeding and that much can be learned when plans go
awry. In her words, Sogo ahead. Fall down. The world looks different from the ground. You
can never fail if you refuse to lose, especially if you have the necessary self-awareness to, Turn
your wounds intowisdom.
3. SuccessEnvision It
Ihad no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as Ivebecome. If I had, Id
have done it a lot earlier.
After being rejected by ABC, Oprah left WLS, formed Harpo Productions and launched anational show. Owning her show in its entirety also allowed her to be truly authentic, in a way
that hosts controlled by large networks were unable to emulate.
She did not have to host B-level celebrities to cross-promote the networks shows, work within
arbitrary budgets, hire mediocre network employees or accept sponsors recruited by the
network. Soon after she launched her national show, a major diet soft drink brand asked Oprah
to promote their product. She did not drink the product and was able to refuse the companys
lucrative offer.
Saying No to certain advertisers was a cornerstone of her authenticity, which ultimately led to
her global popularity. Her fans knew that she was not for sale. If she promoted a book,
product, movie or diet, it was because she was a fan, not because she was earning a
promotional paycheck.
Oprahs message about success is empowering because she reiterates that success is not
something that happens to other people. Success is a choice and the path to success is to
identify your passions, define significant goals and then work your butt off. As she once
said, Thebig secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get thereif yourewilling towork.
Passion Play
Passionis energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.

Forgetabout the fast lane. If you really want to fly, harness your power to your passion.
Honor your calling. Everybody has one. Trust your heart, and success will come to you.
Significance Is Significant
Thekey to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance and then even the
small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.
Themore you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.
Howdo I define success? Let me tell you, moneyspretty nice. But having a lot of money does
not automatically make you a successful person. What you want is money and meaning. You
want your work to be meaningful, because meaning is what brings the real richness to your
life.
Change Is A Choice
Ibelieve the choice to be excellent begins with aligning your thoughts and words with the
intention to require more from yourself.
Doingthe best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.
Thegreatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing
his attitude.
4. HumilityExude It
Bethankful for what you have; youllend up having more. If you concentrate on what you
donthave, you will never, ever have enough.
Oprah remained the most watched daytime television host for over two decades. One of the
reasons she was able to maintain and grow her media empire over such an extended period
was her ability to maintain an emotional and personal connection with her audience, despite
her tremendous wealth and power. As she said on numerous occasions,Istill have my feet on
the ground, I just wear better shoes.
Another reason Oprah retained a solid connection with reality was because she surrounded
herself with a team who worked with her from the outset of her venture. A wise leader, Oprah
was loyal to the early members of her successful startup, understanding that her success was
shared by everyone who contributed to Harpos growth. As she once said,Lotsof people want
to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you
when the limo breaks down.
Having It AllEventually
It is no secret that Oprah has struggled since she launched the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
As usual, the popular press has been quick to decry OWN a failure. As Oprah once said, You
8/12/2019 Personality of Oprah Winfrey

CAN have it all. You just canthave it all at once. The lack of instant success is not equivalent
to failure. As with any new venture, it takes time to hire the right team, define a viable value
proposition and create a winning product.
