Welcome Letter from

Senior Editor

Could I persuade you to go blonde, red, or brunette? Could I persuade you to think that the Celtics are still great, even if they didn`t play in the NBA finals? It`s worth a shot right, no, not a shot of tequila, but you are in

for the ride of your life when you rock with me. When I allow you to read my thoughts, or to tap into my inner celebrity! Who will someday have the chance

to interview local and national celebrities. I would have loved to throw shade if I couldn`t get paid in the 90`s with the likes of Kimberly `Lil`

Kim` Jones. I would have loved to rock Versace shades with the late great Notorious B.I.G. (ne` Christopher Wallace). I would have also loved to ride in the hot California sun with one of the greatest poets, Tupac. However,

fast forward to a day where talent does have a limit and it stops with Miami sound machine beats and Auto tune. It has a faint remembrance of the former

heavy hitters, such as Aaliyah (rest in peace baby girl), R. Kelly (still currently on the scene), Michael Jackson (rest in peace King of Pop), Janet

Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross (rest in peace) and even TLC (we miss you Left Eye). Notice that most of the entertainers who truly

`sang-sang` or gave us their all, are no longer here on Earth. Fast forward to girls running the world according to Beyonce, dancers showcasing

motivation from Kelly Rowland, Lil` Wayne claiming every girl in the world and Drake running behind in a close second. I won`t even mention Lil

Wayne`s female protégé Oneika (better known as Nicki Minaj). One thing is for sure I know my celebrities: past, present and future.

Persuade Me Persuade me is a feature in this magazine that brings innovative debates on common issues where there are no right or wrong answers. Two of our writers will go hand-to-hand on topics that will convince you all common viewpoints we all have on common debates. Today’s topic is… “Is Hip-Hop Dead.”

Hip-Hop is Dead

I am sorry to say that Hip-Hop has died. First off, I am going to

prove this to you through fact, not just my opinion. Hip-Hop has died because of the context and the influential impact artist lack in the music industry. According to the Webster dictionary, the definition of context is the parts of something written or spoken that immediately precede and follow word or passage and clarify its meaning. Currently, artist in the music industry have negative context in their music. There is a difference in music when there are songs that have truthful context compared to something that is falsified. For example, many rap artists throughout the late 80’s to the present have songs that exploit women in a negative perspective. Rappers back then like Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac referenced women as bitches but would have explanation on why they reference them as the b word. I do not condone name calling in the industry but artist now a days have no reasoning to why a female the b word. Notorious B.I.G. has a song called “Me and my Bitch”, which the song referenced a women who supported him through his hardships in life. You would think that he is exploiting woman but instead he is doing the opposite. Currently, most rap artists display negative context in their music about women like Lil Wayne’s song “Every Girl.” At the end of the song, one of the featured artists, Mack Maine, referenced a line in a song “…in about three year’s holla at me Miley Cyrus.” At the time of this song, teen sensation, actress, singer Miley Cyrus was only 15 years old. The content of that lyric Maine stated gives the content that in another three years So basically, one can take the context of that lyric as it’s okay to promote having sex. To mention a female minor in that song with that lyric is insinuating that she is okay to be hollered at when she turns 18 years old. This is the stuff we ignore and you wonder why many celebrities are accused of molestation like rapper, producer, Akon and R&B music sensation, Grammy Award recipient, R. Kelly.

A nother reason Hip-Hop has died is the lack of influential

music. Music had substance back in the day. It was revolutionary. The Hip Hop era in the late 70’s to the early 90’s had positive/negative impact. Hip-Hop was an outlet for many minorities who didn’t have a voice in America. Public Enemy, rap group, spoke on political issues like “Fight the Power”. California based rap group “N.W.A. was viewed as artists with raunchy lyrics based on the things they would say about their environment. There anthem song, “Straight out of Compton,” talked about the racial profiling, the oppressed neighborhoods, and the unjust society. People might not consent their lyrics but artists’ back then, let everyone know their story and how life is a struggle being an African American. Even when rap artist talk about women explicitly, women still had respect. Who other than LL Cool J, who wrote “Around away Girl”, depicts the girl he wants to date. DMX, 90’s rapper wrote explicit songs about women. In his song, “How it’s going down,” he referenced a woman as a bitch, when he realized she was having sex with other people. Like is said before, should no women be referenced as the “b” word but technically, that word is referenced to a lot of people when it shouldn’t be used. It is normal to call someone a negative word or have the idea of someone who has disrespected you. DMX chose to display that in his song, which may be negative to many but truthful in the sense there are women who betray their commitments in a relationship. Now-a-days, Hip Hop artist compete with each other for money, cars, clothes, women, and hood credibility. There is no guidance to music. There are a few artists left who embed the real hip-hop. Check out Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Common, and Lupe Fiasco. I am sure you guys would catch my drift!

Hip-Hop is not Dead!

H ip-Hop is not dead people! I will prove my point by saying that music is limitless and rap artist have the right of free speech. When I say music is limitless, music has no right or wrong. I didn’t know there had to be guidelines on how music should be displayed. Music can be whatever you want it to be. No one puts a gun to your head and forces people to like what they hear. Please, there are songs that we like that have negative content but we support it anyway. Yet, there are songs rapper Juvenile’s song entitled “Back that Azz Up”, which was the former anthem booty shaking song in many nightclubs and now the new booty shaking anthem song is, “Booty Work.” Many of you still continue to shake your tail feather to these songs. When “Hip-Hop’ dies, I expect no existence with rappers or urban culture. Hip-Hop is a sub division culture. Hip-Hop, which has started through minorities, has grown to all races liking the art of hip-hop. You can never get rid of hip-hop as much as you think it has died. Current artist such as Waka Flocka Flame, Fabolous, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj all rap about negative things in their songs, but we all make them millions of dollars. If hip-hop isn’t valued, then we can pretty much say that it doesn’t exist. So, if no one pays attention to these artists, then that’s the day when you say hip-hop has died. As time flies, people and their environments change. The Hip-Hop era during the late 70’s through the mid 90’s, had a different approach of style because of the things going on in society like the Rodney King, the Black Panther parties, etc. Artist during this time directed their music as a social/political mechanism to enhance the unjust society like the previous examples mentioned above. Racism has decreased a bit and it is in high-demand as it uses to incorporate motivational songs to uplift the community.

Secondly, all artists have the right of free speech. In the United States Constitution, the first amendment is the right to free speech. I do realize that music can have a negative effect of the world in regards to peer pressure. Everyone wants the riches and the fame. So what if rap artist rap about whores and violence. This stuff goes on every day. Aren’t people entitled to the truth on the world? See, I look at it like this; every positive has its negative. For example, you would be happy if you bought a new car and three months later, your car breaks down. I am sure you would be mad or sad at that moment. Not to be rude but we can’t hold artist accountable for negative things in the world. Our right to free speech enables an artist to say anything they want. Hip-Hop is still alive. Hip-Hop has changed to the point that it is more imaginary, a fun style of music. Life is full of so much shit. We all should just live happy and listen to what makes us happy! ·

James Davis or better known by his

stage name “Ne’J’cion” was born and raised in the Germantown section of Philadelphia where he attended Martin Luther King Jr High School. His music is for all people but most definitely for the ladies. He currently has two singles out “Lost in You” and “Countdown”. Some artists who have influenced him are; Stevie Wonder, Tank, Jamie Foxx, Usher & Beyonce. Already Ne’j’cion has been dominating stages in Philly such as Warmdaddy’s, showing that he definitely has star quality and ready to take the world by storm.   What is love? Love can be defined in many

ways. Your opinion of love may be different from

my opinion. Love is demonstrated in many shapes

and forms. This feeling of love can be good or bad

in everyday life. This form of expression believe it

or not has influence daily life decisions that are a

lifetime. Is it possible to think about what is going

on in life or think of logical sense when making

decisions in life? At times love confuses us of what

is right or wrong. No one is perfect when it comes to

love.

The most common expression of love is

hearing your mate tell you that they love you or

intimacy. Depending on how well you know your

mate you should know if it is sincere. Anytime you

have to doubt the expression of love, then there is a

problem. When it comes to intimacy, which is also

known as an expression of love, it should be

performed with the mate who you love.

Realistically, in today’s society intimacy is

performed without strings being attached. Certain

types  of  affection  should  not  be  performed  on  an

individual  who  you  do  not  love.

Where’s the love?

A common saying about love is that people

often say they love a person conditionally or

unconditionally. Love will have your attitude in

positive or negative ways sometimes. If you

follow that saying about love that was mention

previous then you know your mate very well.

You have individuals who cannot handle their

mate during the conditional and unconditional

times. The result of that may have your mate

questioning if you do you really love them.

At the end of the day, only you know

what love is. Loving someone is the hardest

thing to do sometimes. However, you have to

be smart enough to know what is right or

wrong. Depending on the bond you have for

each other hopefully it will blossom into love

where you can experience it for a lifetime. Love

can be a beautiful thing when it is right.

Not  So  Perfect

John R Age 25

Philadelphia, pa I invited my soon to be fiancé to a dinner date at Dave and Busters. We love that place. Little did she know, I was going to propose to her. Everything went perfect until I went on one knee, to ask her for marriage. Everyone in Dave and Busters all watched and supported me, as I asked for her hand. That 15.99 eat and play combo I ordered was settling in my stomach. I released a big fart, which roared like a lion. It was so embarrassing to have those kids laughing at me, saying, "your nasty" or the grown people shaking their heads at me.

Nancy O Age 30

I work at a law firm in NYC. I was running late to work and I quickly gathered my cleaned and washed clothes to make an outfit to wear to work. I had a meeting with a county judge to verdict my clients sentence. When I arrived at the meeting, I was the only female in the room and all the men where drooling at me. I was confused because these men see me everyday at work. I happened to look down on the floor and noticed a thong next to my feet. The whole time I went to work, I had a bulge in my pants and that bulge finally came out! So embarrassing!

Krystal C. Age 23

A customer at my job had asked me if I was single. The man had to be in his mid 40's and he probably has kids. My shift was over and he asked me for my phone number. I denied his offer and all of the sudden, he just ran off. I turned around and the police pulled up, showing me a picture of a man, who cops stated had murdered his wife. The picture of the man was the guy that just asked for my number.

Shawn J. Age 26

I remember when I graduated college at Howard University. I was so nervous. I was the first in my family to graduate. As the president called my name, I had walked up the steps and tripped on my gown because it was to long. I had to swag it out and do the "Jerk Dance", when I received my degree. I had everyone rolling at the graduation.

Kelly Age 22

Plainfield, NJ I was invited to go to a step show at Rowan University, NJ. Mother Nature left her present to me and I had no idea. My friends and I saw a bunch of cute boys hollering for our attention. One of them sat next to me and tells me I’m beautiful. I noticed he had plague on his teeth so i nicely walked away from him. Well, when i got up, I had a big red stain on the back of my pants and the guys noticed that and humiliated me. I guess i learned my lesson.

The Current State of Politics

By Kamalah Brown

The current state of politics

is laughable and the current state of local government is even more laughable. As we sit and review why the same people are elected, let us ask why do we elect the same people, but yet expect them to give us a different response each time. Sometimes, we may even be able to predict what they are going to do while in office and it may be something that we as voters might not agree with the person who was voted in. With that said, we as citizens, who want change, have failed to change the state of politics.

It may be due to the lack of thinking

outside the box. It may also be the lack of open-minded people to make an informed decision about a new candidate and new issues. Have we placed politics in a laughable state, to the point where candidates have taken it as nothing more but tricks and not serious change for a society? How do we really want change, if we refuse to change state of our politics, and our hearts? With this, ladies and gents, I challenge you to investigate a new candidate that wants to be positive change and make a change in your respective community. Change your way of thinking, stop voting for someone who been there all the time or who is in the same voting affiliation, and investigate the new candidates on the scene.

THE PURSUIT The  Pursuit  is  a  feature  in  the  magazine  that  highlights  the  passion  and  determination  one  individual  adheres  in  their  prospective  fields.  Persuade  Magazine  had  an  opportunity  to  meet  a  woman  who  is  on

her  pursuit  of  becoming  a  model.  Persuade  welcomes  Ms.  Desarée  Rutledge.

P.M.  Hey  Desarée!  Thank  you  for  your  time!  I  hear  that  you  are  an  educated  young  female  who  graduated  from  Cheyney  University.  (Yelling  C.U.)  OMGosh,  when  did  you  graduate  girl?

D.R.  I  graduated  on  May  2nd,  2009  and  I  got  my  degree  in  Psychology.

P.M.  Wow,  that’s  so  nice  to  hear  but  what  made  you  transition  from  psychology  to  pursuing  your  career  as  a  model?

D.R.  It  was  a  few  weeks  prior  to  graduation  when  I  decided  to  take  a  year  and  pursue  a  new  love,  modeling.  Never  had  I  imagined  myself  doing  something  so  daring.  I  hadn’t  told  my  family  and  I  feared  their  reaction  to  my  decision  that  went  against  the  grain.  Look,  this  is  my  dream  and  I  am  not  going  to  stop  until  it  becomes  reality.

P.M.  That’s  what  I’m  talking  about,  straight  motivation;  but  what  are  some  of  your  biggest  challenges  pursuing  your  career  as  a  model?

D.R.  Every  day  is  hard  work.    It’s  a  constant  reminder  of  why  I  have  to  believe  in  myself.  In  the  beginning,  I  struggled  with  meeting  the  right  people.  Sure,  there  were  plenty  of  photographers  willing  to  shoot  me  but  only  if  I  was  half  naked  or  on  top  of  a  car  (she  laughs).  I  noticed  at  that  point  that  I  needed  to  begin  searching  for  the  people  who  could  help  me  obtain  what  I  want.

P.M.  I  watch  that  show,  America’s  Next  Top  Model  all  the  time.  I  heard  from  some  people  that  you  made  attempts  to  try-‐out  for  America’s  Next  Top  Model.  With  every  season  that  I  have  watched,  I  noticed  a  model  who  struggled  with  their  runway  catwalks,  poses,  their  weight,  etc.  Could  you  relate  to  the  models?

D.R.    (With  enthusiasm)  Yes!  I  have  auditioned  for  A.N.T.M.  and  let  me  tell  you  something.  I  didn’t  make  it  as  you  can  see  but,  that  doesn’t  stop  me  from  doing  what  I  like  to  do.  There  is  a  lot  of  competition  and  you  really  have  to  sell  yourself  to  the  judges.  I  have  always  been  comfortable  with  runway  but  print  work  didn’t  come  so  easily.  Knowing  my  body  and  expressing  an  emotion  through  the  eyes  was  very  tough.  I  wasn’t  sure  of  how  to  make  it  seem  real.  This  is  many  struggles  models  mostly  have.  Then,  like  many  models  say,  I  was  asked  to  lose  weight.  I  have  never  been  over  the  weight  of  135  lbs  in  my  life,  which  to  some  may  seem  teeny  tiny  but  in  the  model  world  I  had  to  lose  about  15  lbs.  So  yes,  there  is  a  lot  agencies  expect  out  of  a  model.

P.M.  So,  how  does  this  beautiful  New  Jersey  (Shouting  JERSEY)  girl  such  as  you,  aim  for  success  in  the  modeling  industry?  What  agencies  did  you  model  in?

D.R.  I  started  to  visit  different  agencies  in  New  York.    This  was  one  of  my  greatest  experiences  because  I’ve  always  loved  the  big  apple,  it  feels  like  home.  I  have  worked  with  Lillie  Designs  by  Latasha,  which  I  love  the  designs.  I  am  a  member  of  #  Team  Pretty  company.  I  had  opportunities  to  model  in  many  shows  like  the  Saints  and  Sinners  Fashion  Show,  which  I  had  a  blast.  I  will  tell  you  all  to  check  out  my  fan  page  on  Facebook.  Just  look  up  Desarée  Rutledge  and  like  my  fan  page  people!  You  know,  I  had  the  opportunity  to  meet  with  agency  directors  who  said  wonderful  things  like  “You’re  a  classic  beauty”.  Some  of  the  agency  directors  would  say  things  like,  “You  look  too  commercial”,  which  is  something  I  battle  with  all  the  time.  There  were  days  I  wanted  to  cry  from  being  turned  down  while  others  I  wanted  to  jump  for  joy  because  an  agency  was  interested  in  me.  After  months  of  visiting  I  still  left  the  city  a  freelance  model  each  time.  As  of  today  I  have  not  been  signed  to  an  agency  but  I  have  not  given  up  my  search.

PPI: P ersuades Personal Interview

Terrence Edwards, 24, Owner and Founder of Terrence Edwards Entertainment L.L.C, is also the owner of Persuade Magazine. Chanel Diane, 23, Vice President of Persuade Magazine, wanted to meet up with Mr. Edwards to discuss how he is impacting the world of entertainment. Edwards and Diane have been colleagues who graduated from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Let's explore the whole blueprint behind inventing Persuade Magazine. .

C.D. Hey Terrence, It’s a pleasure to be here and talk with you. People don’t realize that, this is a special interview because here we are, working together again on another project, Persuade Magazine (with laughter).

How about I start off this interview by asking you to inform everybody what it is that you are doing in your career?

T.E. Pretty much Nel (Diane’s nickname), I am spending my time and energy working with people who want to build a platform for themselves. I want to support their ideas and talents. This is what I want to establish with people. Currently, I own my company, Terrence Edwards Entertainment. I have a variety of talk shows, radio shows, social media sites, and now this magazine. C.D. It’s so funny to see how much you have grown into a businessman. We started college in 2005. In 2006, you already had a talk show, a radio show, a campus magazine, and you were writing scripts for short films. I thought you were literally trying to rule the world, running all of these projects. So, I say all of this to ask you why did you choose the entertainment industry as your primary business? T.E. I think because I can relate to others. I like the entertainment industry. I didn’t choose this for the money, for the clothes, or for anything. I am doing this because I love to do this (stating with passion). I can’t see myself doing anything else. I don’t want to pursue something where I will be miserable every day.

C.D. I definitely understand where you are coming from. We have the opportunity to work together on this project. I think people don’t realize how hard it was to come up with a name. T.E. Yes, I agree Nel. It took us two weeks to come out with a name for the magazine. Our first idea was Trendz Magazine. Then, you came up with Impression Magazine and we both loved it, and that’s when I came with Persuade Magazine. I didn’t like the name at first, but now I like. You confirmed it and it was a go! C.D. That definitely was a challenge coming up with that name. In my opinion, the word "persuade" is a good name for a magazine. Think about it, we are persuading our audience to like this magazine. Our writers persuade their audience in their articles that are placed in the magazine. I find this to be special about the magazine. Why do you find this magazine to be so special? T.E. It’s special because it is a challenge for me. I created a magazine before and it failed. I had an epiphany on doing another magazine. One of the two letter words I like is IT…. the first time I said, “…this is it,” about my first magazine, I failed. With Persuade Magazine, I can say, “This is it,” and I know it will be successful.

T.E. It is a simple as, “Don’t give up in what you do.” Keep telling yourself that this is what you want. Don’t let anybody persuade you not to do it. Nel, I don’t get tired of this! When your mind, body, and heart are in sequence with each other- you must not ignore the combination. When your mind, body, and heart tell you not to do it anymore, that’s when you listen to it. Yes, I came up with an idea to build a company but my team put that into motion. At the bottom line, you will need people to help you run a business. An idea is basically a thought in your mind. You know people have ideas to “walk their dogs at 11:00 at night (with sarcasm).” It’s the motion, the power, and the action, which runs your idea. With those things in place, it’s hard not succeed. – Chanel Diane, V.P. of Persuade Magazine ChanelF@TerrenceEdwards.

C.D. That’s what I am talking about Tee (Edward’s nickname)! You never give up! This is the same approach I use for our writers. I want our readers to like what they read in the magazine. In your personal opinion, what do you think readers will seize from the articles? T.E. We will have a couple of articles where people can relate. Our writers are different in many ways. This is an opinionated magazine. You have articles written from so many viewpoints. Our readers will be able to relate to the articles and have their opinions about it. Our Pursuit article in the magazine is an article that displays individual’s pursuit towards following their dreams. It’s like hey, “I’m persuading you to like my work.” This article shows readers how passionate they are about their careers. C.D. You mentioned the “Pursuit” feature in the magazine as being an article that showcases an individual’s pursuit to following their dreams. What is your favorite feature in the magazine and why? T.E. I enjoy the “Persuade Me” debate because it shows one is entitled to their opinion. They are not going to allow someone’s opinion to change their opinion on a topic. You get told in life that you can’t be what you want to be. You know what I am talking about. You get told you can’t be a rapper, actor or you can’t be yourself. At the end of the day, it is your obligation to persuade those people that, “Yes, I can do it.” You get two perspectives on the same topic. After reading this feature, you will definitely be open-minded about a lot of the topics our writers debate about.

C.D. I can tell you are passionate about Persuade Magazine because you are fully aware of the features in the magazine. Not too many CEO’s know a lot about their company. The majority of CEO’s/Co-founders in America is around their mid 30’s and above. What are some challenges to owning your own company?  T.E. Honestly, it’s a lot of damn work. Excuse my mouth, but that is the honest truth (laughing). I don’t believe I have learned everything that I want to learn about running a business but we will come back to that. Everything I do statues what I stand for as a business owner. This magazine represents all of us. Whatever I dish out to readers will always be reflected on me because of the business being in my name. I have to make sure everything is on point. You can’t be half-ass on projects because the outcome of half-ass work will show, which of course is a reflection of our company we don’t want that.

C.D. Well, Tee, I must say that this has been an adventure for me. We have worked on projects for about five years and we continue to still to do what we love. Life is so precious and we have to value what we do in life. You have always had that passion to go above and beyond. It’s so refreshing to see a young adult such as yourself, to help others get into their prospective careers. My last question for you is what advice you would give to an individual trying to own their own business.

Persuade’s Final Thoughts!!!

There it is people! At this point, you are now finished reading the magazine. I must say, what can you do to impact the world? How about persuade me to believe that there will be a better government. How about persuade me that music still has a positive influence in the world. How about persuade me to knowing that we all influence someone in their lives. I still can't believe how people havebeen suffering through the tornados hitting the New England region. Come on, a tornado hitting Pennsylvania, Jersey, and Massachusetts. Let me not start with the destruction Mother Nature has left in Kansas City, MO. How have we come together as people to help one another? We can all feel sorry for them and pray that it does not affect us or we can help someone who is suffering and become passionate and honorable human beings. Would you want someone to help you if your house was destroyed? Can you imagine all the memories erased from that destruction? On the contrary, it might not be so bad to other families who had broken relationships. This destruction can be a start to a new relationship. Things happen for a reason people! I don't know about you all but I know that I will persuade to you that you make life what it is. Life is a struggle within itself. In this society, we all compete with one another. Why does it have to be a bad thing if your 25 years old still living in your parents house? What about college graduates applying for jobs that does not fit their major because the jobs in their prospective fields are not hiring? Why are wages not increasing but all the taxes and the bills you have to pay are? Half the time, this is why a lot of people break the law because of the stress and obstacles, we humans, encounter on a daily basis. I am starting to feel like 50-cent featuring Nate Dogg in their song “21 questions". There are so many questions that people want answers for. The questions I wrote do not compare to questions other people might have? There is a lot to think about in this world! At the end of the day, I want you all to realize if you have not done so, is to know that there is someone going through the same situation as you. The late Michael Jackson mentioned this on his song entitled "You are not alone". Listen to it people if you have not already listened to it. Matter of fact, after you are finished reading this, listen to his songs. You would be surprised to know that his music had a huge impact on the world and I am talking about four generations of people embracing Michael Jackson’s music. Jackson should be proud of legacy he has left on earth. R.I.P. to all the ones we lost in this world. On that note, this is the beginning of something new. I hope you enjoyed the first issue of Persuade Magazine. I vow to you all that our staff issue you a magazine that is self entertaining and resourceful. Remember, stay focused and always love one another. I love you all dearly. Thank you for reading!
