Possible answers:wentwoRth: Dearest Anne, you look so sad. What is

it?Anne: This is very hard for me to say, Frederick, but I

can’t . . . I can’t marry you.wentwoRth: Can’t marry me? Why not? Your father

doesn’t like me, but he has not forbidden our engagement.

Anne: It’s not him, it’s Lady Russell. She has persuaded me that I shouldn’t marry you.

wentwoRth: But why is she so against me?Anne: She says you have no money, and such an

uncertain future . . .wentwoRth: Well, that may be true at the moment,

but I’m sure I’ll soon have a ship to command.Anne: Oh, I do hope so. But I have a duty to listen to

her – she has been like a mother to me.wentwoRth: You may have a duty to listen to her, but

you don’t have to take her advice!Anne: But she’s only thinking of my happiness, and

being careful for me.wentwoRth: She’s being too careful, in my opinion.

There’s always some danger in life. Anne, Anne, be firm!

Anne: But it would be wrong to marry you, if my family and friends are against it.

wentwoRth: Wrong to marry me? Wrong to marry the man you love? Or perhaps you don’t really care for me after all?

Anne: Oh, how can you say that, Frederick! You know I love you.

wentwoRth: Anne, look at me. You say you love me. So, will you marry me?

Anne: No, Frederick, I can’t marry you.wentwoRth: In that case there’s nothing more to say.

I shall leave you now, and I shall not see you again. Goodbye.

ACTIVITY 3 AFTER READING

Acceptable answers are any words that have an appropriate meaning and fit the grammar of the sentence. Some alternatives are given below.1 Captain Wentworth, writing to his sister Mrs Croft

My dear sister, you will be as surprised (astonished)as I was myself when I heard the news aboutBenwick and Louisa Musgrove’s engagement. She has helped his broken heart to recover, I suppose(imagine, expect) I hope they’ll be happy together. They seem very different from each other. I thoughtBenwick would never love another woman after Fanny Harville’s death. But I was clearly wrong(mistaken). Louisa is a very sweet (pretty, cheerful)girl, who, I feel sure (certain), will be an excellent wife for him.

2 Elizabeth Elliot, writing to her sister Anne My dear sister, you will certainly be surprised (glad, pleased)to hear that Father’s cousin, Mr William Elliot, is here (staying) in Bath. He has visited us several times, and behaves towards us with the greatestpoliteness. He is an attractive man, really handsome. His manners are those of a gentleman, as you would naturally expect of an Elliot. His past behaviour is all explained, and he is now very eager (anxious, keen) to be part of our (the) family circle. Indeed, we see (meet) him nearly every day . . .
