Persuasive’s Goal:
To get the reader to agree with you and your point of view on a particular topic.
Argumentative’s Goal:
To get the reader to acknowledge that your side is valid and deserves consideration as another point of view.
What is the difference?
Writing Techniques Used:
1. Blends facts and emotions in attempt to convince the reader that the writer is “right”
2. Relies heavily on writer’s opinion
o Getting Started:
1. Identify a topic
2. State your side (opinion)
Writing Techniques Used:
1. Offers the reader relevant reasons, credible facts, and sufficient evidence
2. These pieces of information will allow the writer to appear as if they have a valid and worthy perspective

1. Research a topic
2. Align with one side
What is the difference?
Viewpoint:
1. One goal in mind – personal belief that the writer’s way of thinking is the only sensible way to think.
2. The writer ONLY PRESENTS ONE SIDE – his side.
ViewPoint:
1. The writer must acknowledge that opposing views exist – to show that the writer is a fair-minded person
2. Also gives writer the opportunity to counter these views to show why you feel that your opinion is the more worthy one to have.
3. Writer presents multiple sides, although through his writing, you can tell what side they are on.
What is the difference?
Audience:
1. Has an intended audience (given in the prompt).
2. The writer “attacks” the reader – attempting to persuade them to his side of thinking.
Audience:
1. Doesn’t need an audience to convince.
2. The writer is simply researching a topic, and putting the essay out there.
What is the difference?
Attitude:
1. The writer is attempting to gain another “vote” so they can “go after” readers more aggressively.
2. The writer writes with conviction – it is personal, has emotion, and voice.
Attitude:
1. The writer wants to get the reader to consider that they have an idea that is worthy to listen to.
2. The writer is sharing a viewpoint whether the audience ends up agreeing with them or not.
