Past Times in Palmers Green ...At the start of the new century, the 1902 Education Act allowedcounty councils to establish new grammer schools. Middlesex CountyCouncil decided that the Southgate area needed a school. A boysschool was initially opened in a temporary building (BroomfieldHouse) in 1907 and a temporary girls school opened at AvondaleHall in Hoppers Road.

Whilst the new school was growing the county planners went in search for a permanentlocation for the school. A site was found in Fox Lane that was considered a suitable location. The site, which was part of Clappers Green Farm, was near the growing population that theschool served which meant that most could easily get to the school. The area was also verywell served with public transport facilities due to Palmers Green Station and the frequentMetropolitan Electric trams that ran along Green Lanes from Wood Green to Enfield.

Clappers Green Farm was owned by the Walker family. The farm spanned between Fox Laneand Dog and Duck Lane (now Bourne Hill). The farm saw its last harvest in 1908 before itwas put up for sale by auction (much to the annoyance of the Fox Lane residents). It seemsthat the site of the school had already been earmarked by Middlesex County Council as it doesnot appear within the auction catalogue as one of the available plots.

The site for the school cost the County Council £5,758 including fencing. The school was builtby Wood Green builders Messrs. Mattock Bros. at a cost of £13,493. You may have realisedthat these are the same builders that built Hazelwood School as mentioned in the July issueof Palmers Green LIFE.

The new school, which was completed in 1910, had the most up to date facilities. Every roomhad gas lighting and as well as being heated by a state of the art low-pressure heating system. The school had a grand opening by Alderman Col. H. F. Bowles (later Sir Henry Bowles) on 17thSeptember 1910.

The school, led by the Headmaster Mr Alfred Thomas Warren, accepted both boys and girlsfrom the beginning. The school building continued to serve the ever expanding suburb’s needsfor many years but in the 1950’s discussions started about the need to expand the school.Middlesex County Council decided that the school needed a completely new building as it wasfelt that the current building in Fox Lane could not be upgraded. The county council alsodecided that a new site was required for the new building. The county had grounds inCockfosters and as many new homes had sprung up in the locality due to the tube lineexpansion to Cockfosters it was felt that this would be an ideal location for the new building.Work started in 1959 and the school moved out of Fox Lane in 1960.

In 1960 the Fox Lane building was taken over by Southgate School’s old rival to become LowerMinchenden School. You may notice that the school sign that was erected at the front of theschool has Minchenden incorrectly spelt. In 1984 the school merged with Arnos School inWilmer Way Southgate and was renamed as Broomfield. The Fox Lane site was sold todevelopers which subsequently converted the school into flats. The main building is now calledCorrib Court and the old caretaker’s building is called Menlow Lodge both of which are nowGrade II listed. The grounds behind the school now comprise of a block of flats for the elderlycalled Everard Court and 39 houses within a road now called Crothall Close.

I hope everyone enjoyed the summer as much as I did. I have owned a salonin Palmers Green for 16 years and have been a hairdresser for over 30 years.I am currently an educator and platform artist for Paul Mitchell and I ampassionate for my craft and the industry that allows me to work in it.

Look after your Hair by Kiri

Ok enough of the boring stuff, let’s talk hair. The seasonal changes inweather have a dramatic effect on hair, be it cold wet winters or hotdry summers. Each of the seasons can leave you hair feeling lifelessand fragile and in need of some TLC. The best place to start to maintainyour hair is in your local salon with one of the many professionalproducts they will have on offer. I can hear you saying that can beexpensive and that it's cheaper to pop in your local supermarket andpick up off the shelf products. Yes cheaper it is but better it is not! Letme explain, if looking after your hair is a top priority, if you prideyourself on having clean and healthy looking hair, then using qualityhair care products (i.e. shampoo and conditioner) is a must. However, when it comes to getting the best value for money should you buyprofessional salon hair care products or would cheap high street haircare products be just as good?

High street products seem much more affordable and thereforegiving you better value for money because of the low cost of highstreet hair products. Branded premium salon products can appearpricey with the average 300ml shampoo bottle priced at 5 times thecost (£10) of a regular high street shampoo (£2).

On just this kind of price comparison alone, it appears that the cheaphigh street hair products are the winners as you are getting 5 times asmuch product for the same cost, or the same amount of product for 1/5the price of the salon professional hair care products.

However... when you carry out a closer inspection of the differencesbetween cheap hair products and professional salon hair products, docheap hair care products really provide the better value for money, oris buying cheap hair products a false economy? Let's take a closerlook...

Let us test the high street and the professional hair care products tosee which are the best value for money.

We tested a 300ml bottle of shampoo from the high street and a

300ml salon professionalshampoo. With the highstreet product, a 50ml applicationis standard to clean hair where with the professionalproduct a 10ml application was all that was required to clean the hairto the same standard.

Using 50ml per application, the average high street hair shampooprovides approximately 6 applications per 300ml bottle. With just 10mlused per application, the professional salon hair shampoo gives youaround 30 applications per 300ml bottle. Doing a little math, the costper applications are 32p for the cheap high street shampoo, and 33pfor the salon professional shampoo.

Conclusion: although cheap hair care products initially seem abetter deal and provide more value, in reality there is virtually nodifference in price when it comes to the economics of professionalsalon hair care products. Your local hairdresser will consult you on howyour hair feels they will diagnose the quality and condition of your hairand prescribe the correct treatment and procedure needed and giveyou a maintenance package to continue looking after your hair onceyou have left the salon.

And? When you include the much higher quality ingredients, thegreater effectiveness and visual results, and the deeper and morethorough cleansing and conditioning of salon hair care products, buying cheaper high street hair products in favour of salon hairproducts is a complete false economy.

This morning youmay perchancehave been pro pelledto work by theCaptain WilliamLeefe Robinson VC,a familiar sight onthe Great NorthernRoute. The Class 313train was named in2010 in honour of ayoung pilot, the firstto bring down anenemy airship

during London’s first - and now often forgotten - blitz.H G Wells had predicted the use of airships in

warfare as early as 1907 in his novel War in the Air.However, the potential threat from above was notinitially regarded as serious. With the outbreak of theFirst World War, all that was about to change.

On 19 January 1915 at 6.40pm a young man atIngham in Norfolk spotted what at first appeared tobe two stars out to sea moving towards land. Thecraft went their separate ways about an hour laterover the lighthouse at Happisburgh, droppingbombs on Great Yarmouth, Kings Lynn andSheringham; nine people were killed and severalmore injured.

Britain already had its airships, but the sight ofthe slow moving giants with their low, grumblingpropellers, must have been truly terrifying. Theinvading airships were unwieldy to fly and highlyflammable but they were also initially very difficultto shoot down. Their sheer bulk meant that a bulletpuncture was insignificant – ordinary machine gunpellets were ineffective. They could fly at highaltitude, way above the capabilities of aeroplanes.

But Zeppelins were also prone to being blown offcourse, and frequent errors in navigation meant thatpilots often claimed hits for targets they had in factbeen nowhere near. Over the coming year, towns ineastern England were frequently hit, either in error,or by airships jettisoning their bombs for the journeyhome.

The Kaiser’s initial policy had been to avoidcivilian casualties, but first by accident and later bydesign, civilian casualties from air raids mounted. On the night of the 3th September 1916, theGermans launched their biggest raid on London, consisting of what is variously reported as 13 or 16ships, mostly (but not all) Zeppelins. One nonZeppelin craft, a wooden-framed Shutte Lanze SL11,approached London snaking round from the North.Having dropped bombs on Finsbury and VictoriaPark, the SL11 was picked out by searchlights overAlexandra Palace, and moving north to escape thebeam was spotted by 21 year old Robinson, whohad already been in air combat for more than twohours that night. His BE2C by-plane was fast runningout of fuel.

The spectacle that ensued was visible for milesaround and must have been clearly visible inPalmers Green. After several unsuccessful sallies,Robinson dived at the thin end of the aircraft andstrafed the ship with machine gun fire. SL11 burstinto flames with a flash which was said to be visibleas far away as Cambridge, and fell to the ground ina hill top beet field behind the Plough in Cuffley.Though it was 2.30 in the morning, ‘The sky was

red’, said the famous travel writer Norman Lewis inan unpublished autobiography, ‘as bright as day’. Forweeks, thousands of people poured to Cuffley tovisit the site. Lewis’s family were horrified to see thevery young men of the German crew laid out indeath in the little church at Cuffley prior to beingtaken to Potters Bar for burial.

Robinson became a national hero and was widelyreported to have shot down a Zeppelin even thoughthe authorities knew from the beginning that thiswas not the case, possibly because news of thedowning of a Zeppelin was thought to be moreeffective in raising public morale. The remains ofSL11 were put on display at the Honourable ArtilleryCompany in Moorgate (coincidentally now thefrequent destination for the train in Robinson’smemory), though by the time SL11 reached Londona good deal had already been pilfered for souvenirs.

Robinson went on to serve in France before beingcaptured, brought down by a wingman of the RedBaron. He made several escape attempts andsurvived the war, only to become a victim of theSpanish flu epidemic just a few days after the warended in 1918.

Albert Frederick Simmonsbuilder of The Hazelwood Park Estate

Most residents of Palmers Green will know that the housing we see today is primarily a product ofthe late Victorian/Edwardian expansion of London following the Great Northern railway line fromKings Cross. Prior to that period the land was either farmed or occupied by large villa estates. Thustoday you will often see properties as being on the Lodge or Lakes estate. However there is oneestate the name of which seems to have gone out of fashion, indeed I know of some estate agentswho do not even recognise it:-

HAZELWOOD PARK ESTATEThis estate was the product of one manAlbert Frederick Simmons, architect, developer and builder. He was born in1873 the son of a decorator/housepainter in Bethnal Green. Albertpurchased part of the Hazelwood Farmto the west of the New River betweenHedge Lane in the north, LightcliffeRoad in the west and Hazelwood Lane.Albert, some times with his brother-in-law, had built many houses in thePalmers Green area but this was goingto be his biggest development of 215houses over the period of 1905 to 1910.His market was the upper working and

middle classes seeking to buy, £525 freehold, £365 leasehold andground rent £6 10shillings or rent £32 per annum. All the propertiesoffered one or two reception rooms, a dining room, kitchen/scullery,3 bedrooms, a bathroom and toilets in and out. All factors whichremain desirable today for owner occupation or conversion into twoflats although the electric bells (servants) would hardly be required. The first houses were in Osborne Road and Lightcliffe Road. As heexpanded into Park Avenue, Kingsley Road and New River Crescenthe improved the quality of the properties by slightly largerdimensions and better quality fittings. The major features one cansee are the differing architectural frontages of the houses; the roofapex, the window bays and the style and glass of front doors whilstbehind they were basically the same as other properties in the road.

Albert’s greatest work is The Gables, 87 New River Crescent. Itwas striking with white stucco mouldings and various period stylesof architecture. It was built in 1906 as a wedding gift to his bride. Itoriginally had a larger plot which included a detached garage in thesame style as the house (who had a car in those days thus there areso few garages on this estate) and a tennis court. These two featureshave been done away with by post war building. The house continues

to be owned by the family and occupied by a grandson. Albert Simmons died in 1914 but there remains one other legacy

beside the numerous sewer drain covers which bear his name;Hazelwood Lawn Tennis Club now in Winchmore Hill. Stemmingfrom tennis at The Gables Albert rented out a strip of his landalongside the New River for grass courts and a bowling greenenabling the club to be formed of which he became the firstpresident.

Baskervilles Tea ShopBlog

We have had a great summer although the really high temperatures didn’t mix well with tea andcake. Scones however stayed a firm favourite; we had lots of celebration Afternoon Teas andTea Parties keeping us on our toes. Mathilde our new manager started and settled in well, givingme some time off. Normal life may resume and I may have to learn to relax again!

As we head to September the Baskervilles Team are busy getting ready for the autumn. Lots ofnew events for children, a great craft evening on Thursdays where people can learn to sew, crochet or just come along with their own craft project and have tea, cake and a natter. Anotherfilm night on the 20th September with Talkies looks to be fun, with a pre-film supper and a sip ofwine to help the evening along. We are busy planning for our first wedding reception at the shop, very exciting and a littledaunting.

Our thoughts also turn to new cakes for the autumn and how to make use of lovely seasonal foods. One of my favourites is Pearand Polenta. Lovely and moist with warm cinnamon. This cake can be adapted easily for a gluten/wheat free option.

Hope to see you soon.

Pear and Polenta CakeIngredients

500g Pears – any type but not over ripe300g caster sugar150g plain flour (can use a gluten/wheat free alternative)1 tsp. Bicarbonate of soda1 tsp. Ground cinnamon155g ground polenta2 eggs1 tsp. vanilla extract125g butter250g natural yoghurtA handful of chopped walnuts (optional)

• Heat your oven to gas mark 4 or 180°C• Line a 9in (23cm) deep round cake tin or use a cake liner. I cheat and use a mixer and find it works really well. You just

have to make sure the beater catches all the ingredients form the bottom of the bowl. • Cream the butter and sugar. Mix eggs and vanilla in a separate bowl – add slowly to creamed mixture • Add all dry ingredients and the yoghurt. Mix to smooth consistency. Finally add the chopped pears, slowly and don’t over

mix. Add mixture to tin, smooth and bake for between 40 mins – 1 hour until skewer comes clean. The time will dependon the softness of the fruit used. Cool in the tin. Sprinkle with a dusting of icing sugar to serve.

Serving Suggestions: This is lovely on its own but also great warmed with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream.

Fine Diningin Palmers Green

2013 has been a busy year so far for AnthonyWebb so we decided that we all needed to have anight out to let our hair down. I had beenrecommended a pop-up restaurant set withinsomeones home in Palmers Green so I made thebooking.

The New RiverRes tau rant isnot an ordinaryrestaurant. TheSutton familyopen the frontdoor of theirfamily homeevery Friday andSaturday eveningfor up to 10

guests by private reservation. JasonSutton (pictured) is a TV writer by day anda passionate cook by night. He started therestaurant as a way of helping his sonFabian to finance his trip to Borneo withWinchmore School. They began byinviting friends and family for dinner andthe response was so positive that theydecided to set up a website and open itto members of the public. Jason built onthe restaurant with the headline“Specialising in slow cooked food andeveryday ingredients cooked differentlyin a very relaxed atmosphere and also ataffordable prices”. Everything served isfrom scratch, including bread, pastry, mayonnaise and even crackers.

Once we booked Jason came down to ouroffice to talk to us to see what kind offood we liked and did not like. Afterabout half an hour Jason had enoughinformation to create Anthony Webb’spersonal fine dining experience.

The night had finally come so armed witha couple of bottles of wine we walked upthe front path of the Sutton family homein New River Cresecent. The door was

already open and we were greeted by thewhole family. We were shown through tothe back half of the house and as it was awarm evening we decided to sit in thegarden for pre-dinner drinks and warmspiced nuts, quickly followed our firststarter of tomato crisps and basil dressingwhich were absolutly amazing. Jasonthen brought out the pork loin which hadbeen slow roasting in the oven for us tosee before he cut it up.

We were then shown inside to the diningarea. This area is completley open planwith the large, elegant, and professionallooking kitchen has the ambience of aclassy restaurant, where the guests cansee their food being prepared and be ableto talk to their hosts. The second starterwas served to our table, pea moussewhich just melted in our mouths. Then itwas time for the main part of our diningexperience, the slow roast pork loin whichwas cooked to perfection. The dessert waspoached peach with an orange tuilefollowed by home made truffles.

The Anthony Webb team highlyrecommend the New River Restaurant foran unforgettable fine dining experience.

Property Matters by John Constantine

10 Tips for first time buyers

Shop Around

1Once you have found your dream home with us and had an offer accepted it’s time tofind a mortgage. In fact, this should be the first thing you consider before you even view

properties. Knowing how much you can afford and what your monthly payments will bewill prevent nasty shocks later. There are literally thousands of mortgage deals on themarket at the same time so it’s important that you research the market as much as youcan. You can use mortgage comparison websites or seek the help of a professionalmortgage broker.

Seek Professional Advice

2Feeling lost and confused is something many people experiencing when looking for amortgage. You may have been refused a mortgage or told your credit score is low.

There is usually a product that is suitable for these situations and a mortgage advisor cangive you the lowdown on which product to go for.

Make Up Your Mind

3Again, a mortgage advisor can assist you here. Decide whether you want variable orfixed rate payments – it’s all about risk and whether you want the security of fixed

payments each month or variable payments which follow the Bank’s interest base rate.Interest rates are very low right now and many mortgage advisors will advise you to fixyour mortgage for as long as you can.

Ask Questions

4Make sure you understand everything you can about the mortgage application andhome buying process. If there is anything you aren’t sure about, ask. As a first-time

buyer you aren’t expected to know it all and with a mortgage being a huge financialcommitment it makes sense to ask questions before you sign on the dotted line.

Read the Small Print

5Boring, we know! However, the small print might contain something that you weren’taware of or a clause that you need more clarification on.

Keep it Real

6Never attempt to borrow more than you can afford to pay back. Whilst that 5 bedroomhouse with the swimming pool might be the home of your dreams, you won’t think so

when you’re struggling to meet the demands from the mortgage company when you missyour first repayment. The good news is that many mortgage lenders have tightened theirlending requirements to ensure you don’t bite off more than you can chew.

Honesty is Always the Best Policy

7All lenders will lend to you based on your income and your outgoings. Don’t betempted to lie about your income or exaggerate the truth about bonuses. Don’t play

down your debt commitments either. The mortgage application process is very thoroughand your lender will check everything to verify the truth. It’s so much better and easierto be honest.

Think About the Future

8When choosing a mortgage, think about your next likely house move and your nextmortgage. This might be the last thing on your mind right now, but it might help you

to choose your mortgage and the lender you go with. Find out whether your lender willgive you a good deal when you decide to move or whether they save their best deals forfirst-time buyers.

Shop Around Again

9Once you have found the mortgage deal you are happy with, it’s time to shop aroundagain for your home and contents insurance. Building insurance is compulsory when

buying a home and you are strongly advised to also take out contents and life insurancepolicies. Mortgage payment protection might be another option to consider. Mortgagelenders may be able to offer you advice, but they are not insurance specialists and mayrecommend you seek professional assistance from an expert in that field. Shop aroundonline.

Keep Focused and Be Happy

10The trials and tribulations of moving home may stay with you long after you havemoved, but once you are in your home and happy with your mortgage payments

it’s time to take a big deep breath and think ‘I did it’. Congratulate yourself on jumpingthrough all the buying your first home hoops and enjoy your new home.

I have been with my partner for 11 years and we havelived together for 8 years. Our mortgage is in his name.

You should first contact the mortgage company to requesttheir consent to add your wife to the mortgage. If theyagree, then a solicitor or licensed conveyancer will assistyou to complete the mortgage companies’ forms to makethe necessary changes to include your wife. They will alsocomplete and file the relevant forms with the LandRegistry to effect the transfer of the title of the property tothe joint names.

Usually you can choose to hold the joint titles as either: • tenants in common; or• joint tenants.

The way in which the joint title is held will determine theshare of ownership held by each and how each person’stitle will pass on his or her death. You should take properlegal advice on these matters before proceeding.
