■ Patients with diabetes mellitus are to gainincreased access to some treatments in New Zealand,following new decisions by the government’s drugfunding agency Pharmac. In the most significant move,according to Pharmac’s medical director Dr PeterMoodie, access to long-acting insulin glargine is to bewidened, and will be available for use by patients withboth type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In addition, a newrapid-acting insulin glulisine is to be funded, andaccess to blood ketone testing strips and the diabetestreatment acarbose is to be widened.PHARMAC.
