OverviewDegreeDescription

ThePh.D.inMusicEducationisdesignedtoprovideopportunitiesforthehighestlevelofscholarlystudyintheprocessesofteachingandlearningmusic.Candidatesareexpectedtodevelopandtestnewknowledgeinthefieldofmusiceducationwhilepreparingthemselvesforpositionsinhighereducationorotherleadershiproleswithintheprofession.Aqualifyingexam,comprehensiveexam,doctoralthesis,andfinaloralexam(dissertationdefense)arerequired.

ThePh.D.inMusicEducationoffersadvancedstudyoftheprocessofteachingandlearningmusicwitharesearch-basedperspective.Itisintendedforexperiencedteachersseekinggreaterbreadthanddepthinthemusiceducationprofessionandcareersinhighereducation,musicadministration,orotherleadershippositions.ThePh.D.programconsistsofcourses,internships,research,andotherexperiencesdistributedamongthefollowingareas:ProcessesofMusicLearningandTeaching,ContributionsandProcessesofResearch,andArtofMusic.Studentscompleteapersonalizedcognateequivalenttoatleast12credits.Theexactnumberofcreditsrequiredintheprogramwillvaryaccordingtoastudent’spreviousexperienceanddegrees.Atleastoneacademicyearoffulltimeresidencyisrequired(seetheGraduateProgramsBulletinforspecificinformation),althoughfull-timeenrollmentisrecommendedfortheentiredegreeprogram.Aqualifyingexam,evidenceofconsistentscholarlywork,regularreviews,comprehensivewrittenandoralexaminationsincludingaportfolioofwork,andadoctoralthesisarerequired.

PathwaystoDegree

TherearetwopossibleroutesforthePh.D.inMusicEducation.AtypicalPh.D.candidatewillfollowPathway1fromentranceintotheprogramtocompletionofthedegree.IndividualcircumstancesmayrequireaPh.D.candidatetofollowPathway2,butthesequenceremainsconsistent.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttoworkwiththeiracademicadviserinschedulingeachevent.NotethattheGraduateSchoolpublishesacalendarwitheachsemester’sdeadlinesforexaminations,submissionoftheses,etc.Studentsareurgedtoconsultthiscalendar.

Indeterminingenrollmentstatus,PennStateincludesallcreditcoursesofferedthroughresidentinstructionandcontinuingeducation.Creditsearnedbycredit-by-examorcredit-by-portfolio,andcoursesenrolledas“audit”areexcludedfromthecalculation.Foragraduatestudenttobeconsideredfull-timeforanygivensemester,theymustbeenrolledinatleast9credits.Formoreinformation,pleasevisittheenrollmentstatuspageoftheUniversityRegistrar.

Pathway1

Thispathtodegreecompletionrequiresthreeyearsoffull-timeresidencyplusadissertation.Thisisthetypicalpathtakenbymostdoctoralstudentsandisoutlinedindetailinthefollowingpages.

Curriculum

ProgramDescription

Alldoctoralstudentshaveanindividualizedcourseofstudycomprisedofacoreofrequiredcourses,apersonalizedcognate,andothercoursesofinterest.Thecourseofstudyisreviewedatthequalificationmeetingandapprovedbythemusiceducationgraduatefaculty.Thecorecoursesanddescriptionofthepersonalizedcognatearelistedbelow.Studentsmayselectadditionalcourses,inconsultationwiththeiracademicadviserandothermusiceducationfacultymembers,andareencouragedtocontinuetheirdevelopmentasmusicians,particularlyasrelatedtotheircareergoalsandinterests.

ThedisciplineofMusicEducationisconcernedwiththestudyoftheprocessofteachingandlearningmusic.Atthedoctorallevel,thisisextendedtoincludeMusicTeacherEducation.Itisassumedthatpreviousstudies,aswellasyearsofteachingexperience,haveprovideddoctoralstudentswithafirmfoundationinthetheoriesoflearningandthattheyhavedevelopedarepertoireofteachingstrategiesandmanagementskills.CoursesinthecoreofthePh.D.Programaredesignedtobuildonthesefoundations.

SystematicinquiryformsthebasisofPh.D.studyinMusicEducation.Opportunitytodevelopskillsinthecollectionandanalysisofdataareseldompartofbaccalaureateormaster’slevelstudywithintheprofession.Therefore,studiesinthiscriticalareacompriseasubstantialportionofPh.D.study.Doctoralstudentsareexpectedtoconductresearchprojectsthroughouttheirprogram.Theyarerequiredtocompleteatleastoneresearchproject,writethemanuscriptreportingtheproject,andsubmititforpresentationandpublicationpriortothecomprehensiveexam.

AllPh.D.candidatesareexpectedtobeskilledandsensitivemusicians,aswellashavingapassionfortheart.Theseleadtocontinuingandever-deepeningexperiencesinmusicanditissuggestedthatsuchexperienceswillcontinuethroughoutdoctoralstudy.Studentsmayelecttotakecoursesinconducting,literature,performance,musictheory,andmusichistory.Studentsmustpassplacementexamsinmusictheoryandhistory,orreceivepermissionoftheinstructor,priortoenrollmentinupper-levelcourses.

PersonalizedCognate

ThePh.D.inMusicEducationisahighlyspecializedprogrambuildingontheuniquestrengthsandinterestsofeachstudent,preparingthemforasingularleadershippositionwithintheprofession.Thisisaccomplishedthroughtheselectionofapersonalizedgroupingofcoursesthathaveaclear,butunique,focus.Typically,severalofthesecoursesaretakeninfieldsoutsideofMusicEducationandMusic.However,itisunusualtoincludearesearchdesignordataanalysiscourseaspartofthecognate.Priortothequalifyingexamination,thestudent,workingcloselywiththeacademicadviser,willdevelopaselectionofcoursesthathaveaclearrelationshiptothestudent’scareergoalsandresearchinterests.Thisselectionshouldcompriseatleast12credits,orequivalent,andwillbesubmittedtotheGraduateMusicEducationFacultyforconsiderationattheQualificationMeetinginPhase1ofthedegree.Thefacultywithinthismeetingmayrecommendrevisionstothelistofcourses.AfinalcognateproposalmustbesubmittedinPhase2ofthedegree.Onceapproved,thecognatebecomesanofficialpartofthestudent’sPh.D.program.

Ph.D.Minor

Residency

Purpose

Theresidencyprovidesanopportunityforafocusedperiodofformalstudytopermitimmersionintostudyandresearch.Atthesametime,theresidencyoffersasustainedperiodforinformallearningasapartofacommunityofscholars.Itisrecognizedthatmuchimportantlearningoccursoutsideoforganizedclasses.Informalconversationswithcolleaguesandfaculty,browsingmaterialsinthelibrary,andobservingfacultyinteractingwithoneanotherandengagingindailyroutinesaresomeofthelearningopportunitiesthatareavailableonlythroughasustainedandunencumberedtimeoncampus.Furthermore,sincemostPh.D.studentsinMusicEducationdesirecareersasTeacherEducatorsatthecollegiatelevel,itiscrucialtheyhaveopportunitiestobementoredinthisrole.

Expectations

Onefullyearofresidency(twoconsecutivesemesters,excludingsummer,of9creditsofcourseworkeachsemester)isrequiredaspartofthedegreerequirementsforthePh.D.inMusicEducation.However,westronglyrecommendthatstudentsbeinresidencefortheirentiredoctoralprogram.Summersessionisnotconsideredpartofaresidencysinceitisconsiderablyshorterthantheacademicyearsemestersandthefull“communityofscholars”isseldompresent.Inaddition,anysemestersinwhichremedialcourseworkcomprisesthemajorityofthecourseloadmaynotbeconsideredpartoftheresidency.Duringresidency,astudentisexpectedtobe:

1. Afull-timestudent(enrolledin9-12creditsofcoursework);2. Presentoncampusdaily(werecommendthestudentplantoliveintheState

Collegearea);3. AparticipantintheGraduateColloquium;4. InattendanceattheweeklyPh.D.Seminar;5. Anactiveandcollegialmemberofthecommunityofscholars(facultyandother

graduatestudents);6. AnattendeeorparticipantatthenationalorregionalNAfMEconference,theannual

BTAAMusicEducationconference,andtheannualPMEAconference.Inaddition,astudent“inresidence”may:

1. Fulfilldutiesofa½-timeassistantship(ora¼-timeassistantshipduringthefirstyearofaUniversityGraduateFellowship);

2. Acceptlimitedpart-timeemploymentasateacher,conductor,accompanist,etc.,withtheconcurrenceoftheirAcademicAdviser.

Itisrecognizedthattheresidencyrequiresconsiderablesacrificeonthepartofthestudent,butitisalsoconsideredavitalpartofdoctoralstudy.Thefollowingrecommendationsaremadeforresidency(althoughtheyarenotrequirements):

1. Aresidencyofmorethan1yearshouldbeseriouslyconsidered.Ninemonthsisaveryshorttimeinwhichtobuildstrongcollegialrelationshipsanddevelopthedisciplinerequiredforscholarshipandresearch.Doctoralstudentswhoareinresidencefortheirentireprogramaregenerallymoresuccessfulandaremorelikelytocompletetheirprograms.

2. Ifthestudentisunabletobeinresidencefortheentiredegreeprogram,thenresidencyshouldbeplannedtocoincidewiththefinalstagesofcourseworksothattheComprehensiveExamcanbescheduledduringtheimmersioninscholarshipthatoccursduringresidency.

3. Residentsshouldliveincloseproximitytocampus.Theneedforaccesstothelibrary,thescheduleoflectures,seminars,andrecitals,andthetimedemandsonastudentinresidencemakelongcommutesimpractical.

Phase1(EntrancethroughQualification)

AcademicAdviser

Uponmatriculation,studentsareappointedanAcademicAdvisertoassistinallaspectsofthePh.D.Program.StudentsareexpectedtotaketheinitiativetowarddevelopingastrongandpositiveworkingrelationshipwiththeAcademicAdviser.TheAdvisershouldbeconsideredtheprimarysourceofprograminformationandthestudentshouldbeabletoexpressacademicand/orpersonalconcernswiththem.Typically,theMusicEducationGraduateProgramChairservesastheAcademicAdviserfordoctoralstudents.TheAcademicAdviserwillassistinmanythings,including:

1. Workingwiththestudentpriortoarrivalinpreparationforinitialcourseregistration;

2. Guidingthestudentinappropriatecourseselectionthroughoutthedegreeprogram;3. Assistingthestudentinpreparationforthequalifyingexam,includingdeveloping

thePersonalCognate,preparingmaterials,andschedulingtheexam;4. Informingthestudentofresultsofthequalificationmeeting,petitions,andother

relevantdecisionsofthefaculty;5. Advisingthestudentregardingformulationofthecommittee.

SelectionofInitialCoursework

CourseselectionforthefirsttwosemestersofstudyshouldbedoneinconsultationwiththeAcademicAdviser.PleasealsorefertothePathway1ExampleCourseSchedule.AcceptancetothePh.D.programassumesaMaster’sdegreeinMusicorMusicEducationandteachingexperience.Therefore,enteringstudentswillbeexpectedtodemonstrateMaster’slevelmusicianship,scholarship,andteachingabilitythroughmaterialssubmittedintheapplicationprocessorbytakingcoursesthefirstyearofdoctoralstudy.

MusicEducationAssessment

PriortotheinitialmeetingwiththeAcademicAdviser,enteringPh.D.studentsareexpectedtoreviewthePh.D.curriculum,includingcoursesinthePennStateM.M.E.degree,andconsiderifpreviouscourseworkandexperiencesfulfillanyofthecourserequirements.Theacademicadvisermayconsultwithotherfacultymembersasneeded.IfthestudentdoesnothaveagraduatedegreeinMusicEducation,additionalMasters-levelcoursesmaybeneeded.

SchoolofMusicPlacementExamsinMusicTheoryandHistory

Ifyouareinterestedintakingupper-levelMusicTheoryorHistorycourses,youmusttheproficiencyexam(s).TheseexaminationsareadministeredtostudentsenteringgraduateprogramsintheSchoolofMusic.Ph.D.studentswhowishtotakeelectivecoursesinmusictheoryorhistorymustpasstheseexamspriortoenrollmentinupper-levelcoursework.Themusictheoryportionassessescompetencyin(1)auralskills,(2)part-writingandanalysisoftonalmusic,and(3)analysisof20thcenturymusic.Themusichistoryportionofthisexaminationisdividedintotwosections,(1)knowledgeofmusicpriorto1750and(2)knowledgeofmusicsince1750.Studentsfailingtodemonstratecompetencyinanyoftheseareaswillberequiredtoregisterforappropriateremedialcoursespriortoenrollinginanyelectiveupper-levelcoursework.Adetaileddescriptionofthemusictheoryandhistoryexams,aswellasastudyguide,isavailableintheSchoolofMusicOffice.

QualificationProcess

ThepurposeoftheQualificationProcessistoassessthedoctoralstudent’spotentialforscholarship,tosolidifycourseworkandotherexperiencesthatwillcomprisetheprogram,andtomarkofficialadmissiontoQualification.Full-timedoctoralstudentstypicallyengageinthisprocessduringthesecondsemesterofcoursework.TheGraduateDegreeProgramsBulletinspecifies,“ForthePh.D.student,theexaminationmaybegivenafteratleast18creditshavebeenearnedingraduatecoursesbeyondthebaccalaureate.Theexaminationmustbetakenwithinthreesemesters(summersessionsdonotcount)ofentryintothedoctoralprogram.”RefertotheGraduateSchoolwebsiteforfurtherinformation:http://bulletins.psu.edu/graduate/degreerequirements/

Phase2(QualificationtoABD)

EachSpringsemester,theMusicEducationFacultyreviewstheprogressofallstudentsenrolledinthePh.D.Program.Forfirst-yearstudents,whotypicallytaketheirQualifyingExaminthespringsemesteroftheirfirstyear,thisreviewiscompletedthroughtheQualifyingExamprocess.Forallotherstudents,includingthosefromtheirsecondyearthroughthesuccessfulcompletionofthecomprehensiveexam,thisreviewistobecompletedannually.Thepurposeofthereviewistokeepbothstudentsandfacultyinformedastotheprogresstowardthedegreeandtoaffordstudentstheopportunitytoprojectand/orreviseatimelineforcontinuationandcompletionofthedegree,makeanynecessaryrequeststothepreviouslyapprovedCourseofStudythroughtheRequestChangetoApprovedCourseofStudyForm(AppendixI),highlightaccomplishments,andprovideanydescriptionsofworkprojectedfortheimmediatefuture.

ChangestoApprovedCourseofStudy

3. Dependingonschedulesandtimeavailable,theMusicEducationGraduateFacultymaydecidetomeetwiththestudent.Thisisnotanindicationofconcern.

4. TheMusicEducationGraduateProgramChairwillsynthesizefacultycommentsandcommunicatetheminalettertothestudentandthroughtheProgramReviewAssessmentForm(AppendixK).

SelectionofDissertationCommittee

AcommitteeoffacultywillbeselectedbythestudentinconsultationwiththeGraduateProgramHeadtoguideeachPh.D.candidatethroughpreparationfortheComprehensiveExam,preparationofthedissertationproposal,datacollectionprocess,andwritingofthefinaldocument.Withregardtothedissertation,theroleofthecommitteeistoreaddraftsandprovidefeedbackanddirectiontothecandidateconcerningtopicdevelopment,investigativeprocedures,andwritingofthedissertation.Furthermore,thecommitteewillserveasthefinalboardofexaminerstowhichthecandidatemustdefendthefinaldraftofthedissertation.

EachPh.D.studentshallhaveanappointedDissertationCommitteetoguidetheirresearchtraining.Astudent’sDissertationCommitteeshallbenominatedtotheGraduateSchoolbythestudent’smajorGraduateProgramHeadassoonaspossibleafterthestudenthassecuredanAdviser,butinnoeventlaterthanonecalendaryearfollowingthedateofthestudent’ssuccessfulcompletionoftheQualifyingExaminationunlessanalternativetimingisapprovedthroughtheGraduateCouncil’scurricularreviewprocess.TheguidingprincipleformembersoftheDissertationCommitteeisthesuccessofthestudent.

ChangesinDissertationCommitteeMembership

IftheneedforDissertationCommitteemembershipchangeisrequired,whetheratthetimeofanannualrevieworotherwise,thestudent’smajorGraduateProgramHeadwillpromptlymakethenecessarychangesandnotifythedirectorofGraduateEnrollmentServices.

Ifatanytimeastudentbelievesanotherpersoncouldmoreeffectivelyfulfilltherole(s)ofDissertationCommitteeChairorDissertationAdviser,theymaysubmitawrittenpetitiontotheMusicEducationGraduateProgramHeadortheDirectoroftheSchoolofMusic,dependingonthesituation,forsuchchange.TheGraduateProgramHeadorDirectoroftheSchoolofMusicwillbeexpectedtorespondtothepetitionwithintwoweeks.

ComprehensiveExam

Purpose

TheComprehensiveExamrepresentstheculminationofcourseworkandexperiencesinthedoctoralprogram.Throughthisexam,candidatedemonstratebreadthanddepthofknowledgeinMusicEducationandtheabilitytosynthesizetheinformation.

SchedulingProcedures

Priortotheexam:

1. Thestudentmusthavecompletedallcourseworkby(ornear)thedateoftheComprehensiveExam(Pathway1–springorsummerofYear3;Pathway2–atthediscretionoftheAcademicAdviser);

a. Pathway1Benchmarks–QualifyingExamistakeninthespringofYear1,SecondYearReviewoccursinWeek7inthespringofYear2,andComprehensiveExamistakenattheendofthespringsemesterofYear3;

b. Pathway2Benchmarks–Allbenchmarksoccuratthediscretionofthestudentandtheacademicadviser;

2. Candidatestypicallydevoteseveralmonthstoreviewinpreparationfortheexam;3. StudentsmustreceiveapprovalofPartOnematerialsfromthecommitteepriorto

movingaheadwithPartsTwoandThree(asoutlinedbelow).Considerations:

1. ThecandidateshouldinformtheDissertationCommitteeChairwhentheyarereadytosubmitmaterialsforPartOneoftheexam.ItisrecommendedthatthecandidatecompletePartOneduringtheirlastsemesterofcoursework;

2. Thecandidateisresponsibleforschedulingboththewritten(PartTwo)andoral(PartThree)portionsoftheexam,andshouldbegintheschedulingprocessatleastfourweekspriortotheearliestsuggestedwrittenexamdate;

3. Thecandidatemustberegisteredasafull-timeorpart-timestudentinthesemesterinwhichPartThreeoftheexamisscheduled;

4. AtleastthreeofthefourmembersoftheDissertationCommittee(includingtheChair)mustbephysicallypresentfortheoralportionoftheexam;

5. Theoralexamshouldbescheduledapproximatelytwoweeksafterthewrittenexamissubmittedtothecommittee.

Process

1. ThecandidateshouldsubmitpossibledatesforbothPartTwoandPartThreeoftheexamtotheDissertationCommitteeChair.

2. AftergainingapprovalfromtheChair,thecandidateshouldproposepossibledatestoothermembersofthecommitteewithPartOnematerials.TheDissertationCommitteeChairwillassistwiththenegotiationofdatesforthewrittenandoralportionsoftheexam.

3. TheDissertationCommitteeChairtheninformstheMusicEducationGraduateProgramChairofthedates,whorecommendstheschedulingoftheoralexaminationtotheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.

4. PartThreeoftheComprehensiveExamisannouncedandofficiallyscheduledbytheDeanoftheGraduateSchool.Thisprocessrequiresatleastfourweeks.

5. Atleastthreemembersofthedoctoralcommittee(includingtheDissertationCommitteeChair)andthedoctoralcandidatemustbephysicallypresentforPartThreeoftheexam.Othercommitteemembersmayparticipatebyothermedia,atthecandidate’sexpense.

6. Afavorablevoteofatleasttwo-thirdsofthemembersofthecommitteeisrequiredforpassing.Inthecaseoffailure,itistheresponsibilityofthedoctoralcommitteetodeterminewhetherthecandidatemaytakeanotherexam.

7. Whenaperiodofmorethansixyearshaselapsedbetweenthepassingofthecomprehensiveexamandthecompletionoftheprogram,thestudentisrequiredtopassasecondcomprehensiveexambeforethefinaloralexam(dissertationdefense)willbescheduled.

8. ForfurtherdescriptionsoftheComprehensiveExam,seetheGraduateBulletin.

ExamComponents

TheComprehensiveExamhasthreecomponentsandconsistsofbothwrittenandoralpresentations.Thecandidate’scommitteeadministersallpartsoftheComprehensiveExam.

2. PartTwoisawrittenexam;3. PartThreeisanoralpresentationandexam.

PartOne:PortfolioMaterials

ThecandidatewillshowreadinessformovingforwardintheComprehensiveExamprocessbysubmittingaportfolioofmaterialstotheircommitteethatiscomprisedofworkcompletedduringtheprogram.Typically,PartOnematerialsarecompiledduringthestudent’slastsemesterofcoursework.Itisexpectedthatmanyoftheseportfoliocomponentshavebeencompletedduringtheprogram.Therefore,inmostcases,thesearenotadditionalmaterialspreparedfortheComprehensiveExam,butrepresentthebodyofworkcompletedbythestudentduringtheprogram.ItisrecommendedthatthecandidatemeetwiththeirDissertationCommitteeChairtodiscussanyquestionsrelatedtothisprocess.Thecommitteemembersareexpectedtorespondwiththeirdecisionsregardingtheappropriatenessofthematerialswithintwoweeksofsubmission.Requiredmaterialsare:

1. AcurrentCurriculumVita;2. Verificationthatanarticlewassubmittedtoarefereedjournal(ifanarticlehas

PartTwo:WrittenExam

PartTwooftheComprehensiveExamprocessrepresentsthewrittenportionoftheComprehensiveExam.ItmaybescheduledafterthecandidatereceivesapprovalofthematerialssubmittedinPartOne.PartTwoconsistsofwrittenresponsestoquestionsfromthecommitteeandthedissertationproposal.Theprocesswillbe:

1. TheDissertationCommitteeChairwillsolicitquestionsfromthecommitteemembers,selectfourtosixquestionsfromamongthosesubmitted,andreceiveapprovalfromthecommitteeontheselectedquestions.TheDissertationCommitteeChairwillforwardthequestionstothecandidate,onanagreedupondate,whowillhaveoneweektocompleteanswerstothequestions.Theanswersmustbesubmittedtothecommitteemembersonanagreedupondate.

Intheoralpresentation,thecandidateshouldsharethefollowing:1. Abitabouttheirprofessionalbackground;2. ThreespecificexamplesofhowcourseworkandexperiencesatPennStatehave

influencedtheirgrowthasateacher,scholar/researcher,musician,andmentor;3. Theroleofresearchintheirviewofteachingandlearning;4. Theirprofessionalgoals.

Dissertationresearch“officially”beginswiththeacceptanceofaproposalbythecandidate’scommittee.Theplanningofthedissertationresearchprojectshouldbeanon-goingpartofdoctoralstudy(see“SuggestionsforSuccessfulProposalDevelopment”below).Theformalproposalsequenceforthecandidateinvolves:

• Preparingthewrittenproposal,withtheoptionofsubmittingitaspartoftheComprehensiveExamprocess;

• SchedulingandattendingaproposalmeetingwiththedissertationcommitteeiftheproposalisnotpresentedatthetimeoftheComprehensiveExam.

Receivingacceptancefortheproposalgrantsthecandidatepermissiontocontinuewiththedissertationprocess.Typically,thismeansthecandidateisreadytocollectdataandcompletethedissertationreport.

Thewritten,formalproposalandaccompanyingdocumentsreflectaplanningprocessandshouldprovidesufficientinformationforthecommitteetomakeaninformeddecisionaboutthemeritsandfeasibilityoftheworkplanned.Thedissertation,includingtheproposal,istobetheindependentworkofthecandidate.Therefore,itisthecandidate’sresponsibilitytoprepareaproposal.

FinalOralExam(DissertationDefense)

Purpose

ThepurposeoftheFinalOralExam(DissertationDefense)isforthestudenttodemonstratethattheythoroughlyunderstandallaspectsoftheresearchproblem,theresearchprocess,andtheimplicationsofthefindings.Thisdemonstrationoccursintwoparts:(1)submissionofthefinaldissertationdrafttothecommitteeand(2)atwo-partexamconsistingof(a)apresentationsummarizingtheresearchand(b)consultationwiththecommitteetodiscussandrespondtothepresentationanddocument.FinalOralExampresentationsarepubliceventsandmaybeattendedbyanyonewithinvitationfromthestudentormembersofthecommittee.

Scheduling

WhentheDissertationAdviserandstudentbelievethedocumenthasbeensufficientlyrefined,theDissertationAdviser,withtheassistanceofthestudent,shallpollthecommitteeforpossibledatesforthetwo-hourexam.567TheDissertationAdviserthenschedulesameetingofthecommitteethroughtheGraduateSchoolfortheFinalOralExam.

SubmissionoftheDissertationDraft

Thestudentmustprovidecompletedraftsofthedocument,intherequestedformat(electronicorhardcopy),toeachcommitteememberatleasttwoweekspriortotheexam.8

TheExam
