Sandy RothIn Case You Missed Itby Leonard Goldstein

Chester Skotak, Jr., a Texas native, moved toeastern Collier County in the mid-1970s, intenton raising terrestrial ornamentals on his newly-p u r c h a s e d p r o p e r t y .Unfortunately, reality in theform of walking catfish andsaltwater intrusion interferedwith his dream. But thenChester moved to CostaRica, where he foundbotanical refuge against thoseinsults and began breedingbromeliads. The rest, goes thesaying, is history. And thanksto Chip Jones, we now know alittle bit more about thathistory. At the BSSF's July meeting, nearly 40 soulscourageous enough to overcome the ennui of a

Florida summer were treated to a quick-paced,informative presentation by Jones, a nurserymanand landscaper with interests stretching across abroad botanical range. He entertained hisaudience with a program on "Hybrids and Plantsof Chester Skotak: Works of a BromeliadMagician." Jones first asked, "Why are Chester's Plants theBest?" The answer is that he (1) is a good

grower, (2) is a goodbreeder, (3) has goodaccess to various forms,(4) possesses years ofexperience, and (5)keeps only the bestplants. There are nowalmost 400 ChesterS k o t a k p a t e n t e dbromeliads -- large,small, intergenerichybrids, variegated,

florally improved, endowed with commercialquali t ies. [For the full l i s t , seehttp://registry.bsi.org/index.php?fields=&id=11321&search=Skotak.] And his creations carryequally imaginative names: 'Wild Zombie','White Gossip', 'Inkwell', 'Norman Bates','Orange Crush', 'Hannibal Lector', 'Yin', 'Yang','Sheba', 'Picasso', 'Skotak’s Tiger', 'AbsolutelyFabulous'. On the subject of variegation, Jones explainedthat it does not hold up in tissue culture.Breeding via pups makes variegations stable andtherefore commercially valuable. Skotak isamong the handful of breeders possessing theinterest in, and space for, conducting such

propagation. Jones, with the helpof nice photos, singled out manyof his favorites. They includeA e c h m e a s : ' G o l d e nGoddess', 'Pagoda', 'Shaggy','Supernova', 'Unstable Mabel';Alcantarea: 'P.I.T.A.'; Ananas:'White Lightning'; Neoregelias:'Arctic Blast', 'Aventura','Bachata', 'Mojo' (miniature),'Banggerreng Rainbow' ('CaptainHook'), 'Ozone' (easy andcolorful), 'Freddy Krueger'

(large), 'Banshee', 'Bottoms Up', 'Wild Rabbit','Tiger Cub' (an ampullacea-tigrina descendant, therefore miniature), 'Skotak's Tiger'.

Jones reported that Skotak believes that to ensurethe best quality control from which to makeselections, a grower must observe a hybrid forthree years, after which he/she will cross theresulting selections again.Sometimes serendipityplays a major role in thec r e a t i o n o f n e wb r o m e l i a d s . F o rinstance, Neoregelia'Skotak's Tiger' (f/k/a'Tiger'), a very importantconstituent of 21stcentury Neo. hybrids, came, according toSkotak’s account, froma trash pile in Rio deJaneiro state which he[and another individual]discovered in 2004. Itgrows on rock or as anepiphyte. J o n e s c o n s i d e r sNeoregelia 'rothinessa' adeceptively good hybrid, with widely-spacedspines typical of Neo.carcharodon. Adding tohis list of interesting andinterestingly-namedSkotak Neo. hybrids, hementioned 'SharkNoodles', 'Moon OverFort Dix', 'Bobby Hull'(ugly, but a goodbreeder), 'Duk Soon' (aphenomenal plant),'Lorena' (named forSkotak's wife), 'Ed Prince' (but 'Moyna Prince' isa Gary Hendrix hybrid), 'Tunisia' (a lot like 'EdPrince' and grows like a weed), 'Pimiento'(should be used more, looks best when larger, and can take full sun or shade). Jones next addressed Skotak's 2007 book,"Searching for Miss Fortuna: The Hunt for aBromeliad," disclosing that Skotak has said thatpeople have offered him money not to write asecond book. Jones diplomatically remarked thatsome of the content must have been fictionalized.Jones also reported that Skotak claims he has notmade a cent off his Neo. 'Harry Luther' hybridsince selling his first group to Tropiflora. However, he does make money from hybridizing

pineapples. He also sells Guzmanias toDeroose [the huge Belgium-based plantproducer], which makes selections and returnsthem to Skotak. Later, additional selections aremade for tissue-culturing.

Jones has visitedSkotak's facilities inC o s t a R i c a . H edescribed them assmaller than some of theThai nurseries, but stilllarge enough that theycannot be seen in oneshot. Nearing the end of hisp r o g r a m , J o n e so b s e r v e d t h a tAechmea 'RobertoMenescal' [named forthe famed bossa novacomposer/guitarist/vocalist] is a plantthat performed betterfor Skotak in CostaRica than for Menescalin Brazil. He added,parenthetically, that forcriticizing Menescal'sc o m m e n t sabout Brazil's Atlanticrain forest, Skotak ispractically persona nongrata in Brazil. The speaker concludedh i s e n l i g h t e n i n gp r e s e n t a t i o n

by wistfully noting that the Bromeliad Magicianculls hybrids more beautiful than anything Joneshimself can produce; he would like to save themall.

MURDER IN CORBIN A© by Robert MeyerP R E V I O U S C H A P T E R S M A Y B E S E E N I Nhttp://www.bssf-miami.org/

121.On the way over, Boss called Rodriguez. “You stillthere with the pipes?”

“Yes. Want anything from us?”

“Yes. I want you to get proof of any rent paymentsmade by that pissant.” Boss implored.

“What’s a pissant?” Rodriguez asked.

“It is one of those words which means exactly whatit sounds like. Capiche?”

Rodriguez understood and told the pissant to gatherall canceled checks or receipts. Such request was

obliged without problem within only a few minutes. Upon receipt, Rodriguez called Boss and said, “Allchecks made out to Dorset. All checks endorsed byDorset. All checks cleared by Barnett Bank. Wejust need to know if this is the same Dorset as theone in the BSSF.”

“Very good my man.” Boss replied. “You arelearning very well.”

When returning to the station, Boss called uponMarlene to visit Dorset for questions about whichbanks he may have used. Meanwhile, a title searchshowed the Dorsets to own the property. Paul wasbeing thrown under the bus, and by amateurs whosepaper trail disproved many of their representationsto Paul only an hour earlier.

Boss hated liars. Especially wealthy liars. Especiallywealthy liars whose homes he jealously despisedbecause he could not afford such a home, let alonethe living room where they met. More thananything, Boss hated wealthy liars who usedservants as inferior people. He hated anyone whoused servants, nut wealthy liars who used servantswere the bottom of his pile. Such people weretreated like he was. Invisible to those around them. Thrown off as unsophisticated, and unread, or justintellectually inferior. They were tossed about asaesthetically inferior, unless blessed with goodlooks – which may lead to other manipulations.Being shunned as dumb and ugly is somethingwhich Boss knew well. And, then a bulb entered hishead.

Boss called Marlene while on her way to the Dorsethome. “Don’t speak to the Dorsets. Get the servant.Pull her, cuff her, and take her to the station. I’llexplain later.”

“What are the charges?”

“Make up something? How about bromeliad hater?Or copper kettle maker wannabe? Or, the usual –tax evasion, immigration or something semiserious.”

Less than an hour later, while Boss and Paul hadbeen in the room for what Paul would only describeas an eternity, the servant arrived with Marlene.

And, the tenant came in with Rodriguez onlyminutes later. Unlike the servant, the tenant wassmiling and glad to be of assistance.

122.Joshua learned more about plants in one day than he

BromeliAdvisoryPage 7

had learned in a lifetime. And, in some ways, thatwas not by accident as his interest in plants wasbelow even the other subjects he loathed – like Sports Page talk and ESPN. He was a nerd, andproud of it. If pressed, he would spell out that titleof nerd with a capital “N.”

But, this crash course involved something that sportstrivia could not – financial reward. The Gortseffectively delivered the plant world to a place whichhad been previously untouched. Probably, the orchidworld would shun this concept and look upon it asthe bastardization of their world’s heredity. Hethought of that year when a Seattle fish farm had anoutbreak. Trouble wreaked havoc. The Atlanticsalmon werefarmed, andlocals did notw a n t s u c hinferior fish tospawn withPacific salmon. So, free licenseto fish theescapees wasl a u n c h e d . Great rewardswere receivedb y l o c a lhobbyists. And,many a sea lioncame to shore, belly up, tryingto digest theirgreat daily catches which on occasion became deathsentences derived from their gluttonous appetites. Heknew bromeliads were Atlantic salmon and orchidswere Pacific salmon – and he wondered whether theplant world would be more accommodating than thefishing world of Washington state.

As thoughts about salmon and orchids andbromeliads dallied about in his conscientiousness,Joshua heard a voice come from behind him.

“Hi there stranger.” The voice was too deep to be agirl. And, as he turned around, he noticed the skin-toughened and age-worn skin of Marin’s face. “Missed me?” Marin then smiled and asked theyounger gentleman to walk with him outside whereless ears and eyes could be found.

As they exited the building, Marin asked, “So younow know how the Gorts may have tricked MotherNature. But, do you know who doesn’t like to befooled?”

Joshua humbly and slowly nodded his head side toside.

Marin, seeing the cue from Joshua’s head motion, answered his own question. “The people who makemoney from selling orchids. The people who makemoney from selling bromeliads. The people whohave millions of dollars invested in plant culture, who ship to all continents, and make millions inprofits by shipping millions upon millions of plantseach year.”

“Millions?” Joshua cheeped almost silently.

“Sure. There are houses all over America andEurope whichmass producethese plants andsell to nurseriesfrom fractions of adollar under thea u s p i c e s o frecurring businessw i t h o r d e r samassing in themillions. Do youk n o w w h a thappens whent h e i r p l a n t sb e c o m eyesterday’s prizewhile the Gort’snew cross comesi n t o t h e

limelight?”

Joshua again nodded side to side .

“Bankruptcy. Nurseries treat their suppliers like acheap hooker treats her customers. Whoeverdelivers the better profit is the next to be serviced. The Gorts had spread the word that their plantwould be mass produced, at bromeliad prices. Thatlittle slice of knowledge was a sledgehammer ofconcern to the business. Better plant than thebromeliad for the same price? That formula is adisaster to the old plant. And, as this new bromeliadresembles orchids, but can be purchased forbromeliad prices, another disaster to another world– the orchid.”

Joshua understood this, and then asked a verypoignant question: “Who spread the rumor about theprices?”

Marin could not answer.
