He was not an oarsman, but he was an athlete at Trinity College School. His father, William B. Cleland, was a director of the St. Catharines R.C., a member of the Henley Aquatic Association, and owner of the Jordan Wine Co.. He purchased the Omar Khayyam wine ewer in an antique shop in England before WWII. When William Cleland presented the trophy to the C.A.A.O. in 1945, it replaced the Propeller Club Trophy. The ewer is arguably the most artistic example of gold and silver craftsmanship in existence. In 2011, Sotheby's submitted an insurance value to the C.H.R.C., the trophy's owners, for $60,000 (U.S.). Trophy Name

Calder Cleland (1922-1943) was a radio operator and air gunner in the Royal Canadian AirForce who was killed during air operations over Sicily. He was not an oarsman, but he wasan athlete at Trinity College School. His father, William B. Cleland, was a director of the St.Catharines R.C., a member of the Henley Aquatic Association, and owner of the JordanWine Co.. He purchased the Omar Khayyam wine ewer in an antique shop in Englandbefore WWII. When William Cleland presented the trophy to the C.A.A.O. in 1945, itreplaced the Propeller Club Trophy. Trophy History 1968: a new trophy for the Senior Four, the Maurice J. Carroll Challenge Trophy, ispresented.The original Challenge Cup for Fours appears in a 1945 Henley program photo of a groupof trophies. It is not clear if it was still in competition.

The Challenge Cup for Fours was one of the original three challenge cups competed for atthe First Regatta of the Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen in 1880. The designwas selected by the Regatta Committee of the C.A.A.O. on July 2, 1880. The Associationraised the $500 to pay for it by subscription. Zimmerman, McNaught & Lowe of Torontodesigned and made it. Its current location is unknown.

Trophy Name

Florence Saunders (1911-1986) was the childhood sweetheart, then the wife for 51 yearsof longtime Henley Regatta Chairman, Claude Saunders. As newlyweds, while Clauderepresented Canada at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Flo returned to work at Eaton's tosupport them. She was an original member of the Leanderettes, a group of wives whoraised money for the Leander B.C. rowing programme. She served as Claude's secretary,regatta assistant, and provided lunches for meetings at Leanders. Flo and her youngchildren accompanied Claude to Ontario regattas at which he was an official. As adults,her son, Claude, Jr. won 7 Henley medals sculling for Leanders between 1965 and 1969,and her daughters, Lois and Janice worked as regatta volunteers.

Kaschper Racing Shells was founded in 1969 by Jacob Kaschper in Lucan, Ontario. Hebegan by building wooden body shells for the London R.C., and continues to produce anddevelop some of the most advanced full carbon racing shells in the world. The trophy wasJacob Kaschper's contribution to the 1982 celebration of Henley 100. It is on permanentdisplay at the Centennial Branch of the St. Catharines Public Library.

THE LOU SCHOLESTROPHY

Background

First Winner The Association Single was added to the Henley programme in 1925 and was won by ChetTurner from the Argonaut R.C.. The photo above was taken in 1949. If there are 12 smallshields on the base, that would suggest that the trophy was inaugurated around 1937.

Trophy History The trophy appears in a 1944 Henley program photo, and in a 1950 photo, but not earlieror later. In 1974, The Jack Guest Memorial Trophy was donated for the Association Single,so The Lou Scholes Trophy must have been retired by then. Its current location is unkown.

Trophy Name

At the 1903 Henley, Lou Scholes (1880-1942) won the Senior Single, and with FrankSmith, the Senior Double for the Toronto R.C.. In 1904, Lou won the Diamond Sculls at theHenley Royal Regatta, the first of only three Canadians to do so, and on his return wasgiven a civic reception before an estimated 80,000 of his fellow Torontonians, includingNed Hanlan. Lou represented Canada at the 1908 London Olympics, but did not medal. Hewas inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1952, and Canada's Sports Hallof Fame in 1955.

The Perry Ellis line began with womenswear and expanded over timeto include menswear, accessories, shoes and perfume. The first Perry Ellis fragrances,Perry Ellis for Women and Perry Ellis for Men, debuted in 1985. Perry Ellis was one of thecorporate sponsors of the 1986 Henley.

Trophy Name

The Propeller Club of Buffalo was part of a national organization whose membershipcomprised a cross section of the maritime industry throughout the United States andaround the world. Although Buffalo no longer has an active Propeller Club, members inother ports continue to promote, further and support the merchant marine.It is not clear when the trophy was last presented. It appears in a photograph taken onJanuary 31, 1951, but the High School Coxed Four, the race for which the trophy waspresented after 1944, continued as a Henley event until 1963. It currently resides at theWest Side R.C.. Some of its silver plate was lost in the fire which destroyed the West Sideshell house on July 30, 1975.

Roy Couch (1895-1959) had success as a lightweight oarsman in the newly-formed WestSide R.C. in 1913. He also coached, and in 1921, when West Side inaugurated a highschool program, Roy coached Lafayette H.S.. Roy continued coaching until 1947. He alsoinaugurated women's rowing at Florida Southern College in 1954 and in March, 1955, hiscrews were featured in both Sports Illustrated and Life magazines. The trophy is currentlyhoused at the West Side R.C..

William T. "Doc" Tait (1885-1951) was President of the Niagara District Aquatic Club in1924. He was also a longtime director of the Henley Aquatic Association, serving asSecretary-Treasurer in 1928, and becoming President in 1950. Doc's widow, Mona, madethe inaugural presentation of the trophy at the 1952 Henley. The current location of thetrophy is unknown.
