Photosynthesis
& Cellular Respiration
What is Photosynthesis?
The process of capturing and transforming the energy of sunlight into chemical energy
Who Uses This Process?
Plants (Plant Cell)
Some Bacteria's
Protists They make their
own food!
Which Organelle inside the
plant cell performs
photosynthesis?
Organelle: Chloroplast
Why is it Green?
Pigment called chlorophyll
Chlorophyll – Contains photosynthetic membranes
Converts light energy to chemical energy
Chlorophyll Why are plants green?
Light-absorbing chlorophyll molecules are present in thylakoid discs that fill the CHLOROPLAST
Out of the entire spectrum of colors that makes up white light, chlorophyll absorbs both the red and blue.
Green is reflected away, and is the color you observe.
What do you need for
photosynthesis to take
place?
Sunlight
Carbon Dioxide (Co2)
Water ( H2O)
Oxygen
Glucose
Photosynthesis Equation
How does the water, carbon dioxide and
sunlight enter the plant?
Guard Cell
Guard cell walls have cellulose
This causes the bow in the
Guard cell and stomate opens
What is Photolysis?
This part of photosynthesis occurs in the granum of a chloroplast where light is absorbed by chlorophyll;
A type of photosynthetic pigment that converts the light to chemical energy.
This reacts with water (H2O) and splits the oxygen and hydrogen molecules apart.
From this dissection of water, the oxygen is released as a by-product
