Physical Education What will you learn? Enjoyment of physical activity and sport stems from curriculum lessons, during which every girl is challenged in a broad range of activities to improve her skills and develop her understanding. Our contemporary Physical Education curriculum also promotes positive attitudes towards an active and healthy lifestyle and lays the foundations for the development of an interest in sport and physical activity after school. The link between active, knowledgeable performers and examination success is recognised and supported through our extensive programme of curricular and extra-curricular activities. In addition to the core curriculum, girls have the opportunity to study GCSE PE and / or the Sports Leaders Awards and Netball Youth Umpires Award. Greater choice is available in Years 10 and 11, providing the girls with the opportunity to try new activities and focus on their preferred areas. The theory element has widened my knowledge of sport and the body.” “I wish I did GCSE PE!” Facilities Our outstanding new 6-court Sports Centre, opened in September 2016, can house everything from national league standard netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton matches to indoor hockey and tennis, to facilitate a wider range of higher quality activities. Students can also take advantage of our new fitness suite, ergo suite and group cycling suite as well as a full size dance studio. How is the subject taught? We have a large department of 10 specialist teachers. All staff teach across the range of curriculum lessons, providing a wealth of teaching and performance experience. Core lessons are practical and active! Teachers support every girl to reach her potential. From Year 10 onwards girls choose options for their activities creating a bespoke programme. In addition, students can choose to take Physical Education as one of their I/GCSE options. GCSE PE is taught in four lessons per week, two of which are practical and two theory based. Practical lessons include activities such as personal survival, circuit training, trampolining, badminton, basketball and a range of other activities. Girls rotate sports every half-term. The Sports Leaders course at Levels 1 and 2 is taught in a predominantly practical format, through a range of different activities. Girls have the opportunity to learn about leadership and put their learning into practice in a variety of situations both within school and in the local community.
