History

Next to Disneyland, few companies have as rich a history of

innovation and longevity in Anaheim as Mettler Electronics. Founded

in 1957 by engineer and inventor, Hal Mettler, the firm is the world

leader in portable ultrasound and electro-stimulation therapy

equipment used in chiropractic, physical therapy and sports

medicine.

Hal’s son Stephen C. Mettler was, until recently, the firm’s

President and Chief Operating Officer. Today his son, Mark Mettler, serves as President and

heads up International Sales. Matt Mettler serves as Vice President and National Sales

Manager.

Hal Mettler introduced his company and

groundbreaking Sonicator® 700 in June of 1957, with

its unheard of price of $199.50. Because the new

device was so affordable and portable, it

revolutionized ultrasound therapy, making it readily

available to a wide range of therapists and patients.

With the new Sonicator, therapists could move the

machine easily between treatment settings to reach any patient requiring therapy. It was an

engineering breakthrough on the order of the transistor radio.

Following the success of the Sonicator, a rapid succession of Mettler product

innovations followed, including Auto*Therm® Shortwave Diathermy, Cavitator® Ultrasonic

Cleaners and portable Muscle Stimulators. Hal Mettler was awarded a total of fifteen

patents for his ideas.

After Hal’s death, the firm maintained his commitment to innovation. Mettler

Electronics engineering group continued to update and improve the products while

maintaining an active new product development program. The result is a state of the art

product line—with microprocessors replacing the original tube and transistor circuits—for

enhanced performance and reliability.

Success breeds imitation in any industry, and the portable ultrasound business is no

exception. But despite the fact that Mettler Electronics faces stiff competition from dozens

of domestic and international competitors, the family firm remains the world leader in the

industry it spawned. Currently Mettler Electronics sells 60% of the ultrasounds in the world.

According to Stephen Mettler, the reason that customer loyalty is so high is

because…”customers know that Mettler products represent quality and value. When they

buy a Mettler Sonicator, or Sys*Stim®, they know they are buying a product that is ‘sure to

work’ for years to come.”

Therapeutic Ultrasound

In 1957 Mettler Electronics Corp. revolutionized the therapeutic ultrasound industry

with the Sonicator®. Portable and lightweight, it was the first of its kind. Still today, the

Sonicator is the standard in therapeutic ultrasound devices. All Sonicator devices feature

detachable applicator cables, continuous and pulsed modes, built-in applicator cradles and a

two-year limited warranty, one-year on applicators and cable.

Direct Crystal-to-Patient

All Sonicator ultrasound applicators feature

unique crystal-to-patient technology that

delivers ultrasound directly to the patient

without a metal interface as well as watertight

characteristics for underwater therapy.

Universal Applicator Cable

Ultrasound applicators can be changed quickly and easily using Mettler’s unique universal

applicator cable. Instead of having multiple attached cables, there is only one. The cable can

be changed out if damaged without needing to send the entire applicator assembly in for

repair, saving time and money.

Depth of Penetration

Arrows indicate the relative depth of ultrasound penetration

between 1 MHz and 3.3 MHz frequencies.

Sonicator 740

The Sonicator 740 is 1 and 3 MHz therapeutic ultrasound unit that comes

with a 5 cm_ dual frequency applicator. It is light-weight and portable and

FAQ’s

Q: Is the 395 more powerful than the 390/391?

A: Yes. The 395 operates at 200 watts in the continuous mode and 400 watts in the pulsed

mode. The 390 operates at 100 watts in the continuous mode and 200 watts in the pulsed

mode.

Q: Why would need the extra power?

A: Some conditions require higher output levels to treat. Certain patients will require the

extra output levels as well.

Q: Is there more than one applicator for

the 395?

A: Yes. The 395 has 8 applicators to

choose from.

Q: What is the biggest difference

between the 395 and the 391?

A: Not only is the 395 twice a powerful,

it allows for continuous tuning of the patient throughout the entire treatment. It reads the

patients resistance level and puts out intensity accordingly. It has the ability to increase or

decrease output based on patient movement. This technology assures the clinician that the

patient is getting the optimal treatment 100% of the time. The 390 also has this self tuning

capability but only during the first 5 seconds of the treatment.

Q: I have seen a couple other diathermy units on the market. Why should I buy the Mettler?

A: Mettler has been manufacturing diathermy units in the US since 1968. Mettler is a

pioneer in the field of shortwave diathermy. No other company has the history and expertise

that Mettler does.

Q: If I purchase the diathermy how do I get it calibrated?

A: Mettler has biomed service companies all across the country that can calibrate and

service your diathermy unit.

Specification

Auto*Therm® 390x combines the ME 390 with an arm, inductive

coil applicator and heavy-duty cart with ample storage space.

Using this model, you will be able to choose from two different

modes of application—the deep penetration of inductive coil

diathermy or the shallower capacitive style with the soft-rubber plates.

Weight: 60 lbs., (27.3 kg)

Dimensions: 37 in (H) x 19 in (W) x 19 in (D), ((95 cm (H) x 48 cm (W) x 48 cm (D))

FAQ’s

Q: Why would I use diathermy over ultrasound?

A: Ultrasound is very effective for treating small specific areas where diathermy treats a

much larger surface area and penetrates much deeper.

Q: Is diathermy reimbursed?

A: Yes, diathermy has its own CPT code.

Q: What is the difference between the 390 and the 390x?

A: The 390 is the portable version that utilizes rubber plate capacitive electrodes. The 390x is

the full version that includes the unit, treatment cart, arm, and coil induction drum

applicator.

Q: What is the difference between the capacitive applicators and the drum applicator?

A: The capacitive applicators are used for shallow penetration and the induction drum is

used for deep penetration.

Q: Do we have to isolate our diathermy unit in a separate room like in the old days?

A: No. With today’s technology and safety requirements, diathermy does not have to be

isolated.

Q: Do I still have to worry about metal objects in the body when using diathermy?

A: When using the continuous mode, metal has the tendency to heat up in the surrounding

area. In the pulsed mode, the unit does not have the capability to heat metal.

Q: Can diathermy be treated over the patients clothing?

A: We recommend that you remove the clothing around the treatment area and use a terry

cloth towel directly on the skin. You then place the drum directly on the towel.

Q: What is pulsed diathermy used for?

A: Just like pulsed ultrasound you will get the mechanical effects of diathermy without

having any thermal properties.

Q: what is the biggest advantage of diathermy?

A: Diathermy treats a much larger surface area as well as having much deeper penetration

levels than other thermal modalities. Diathermy is also the only unattended modality in the

country allowing the clinician to attend to other patients while the treatment is running?

Metron Ultracheck The Metron Ultracheck is a simple and cost effective way to ensure your clients are receiving the desired dose of ultrasound therapy both safely and effectively. This simple to use device is designed to test the consistency of output of any ultrasound machine between professional calibrations. Designed by an Australian Physiotherapist in conjunction with a Biophysicist, this simple yet effective device allows the practitioner to test their own ultrasound equipment to ascertain the accuracy of the output. Using the linear scale, immediately after a professional calibration, the therapist is able to measure the output at regular intervals and ensure there are no fluctuations in ultrasound output. The results of these tests are greater confidence in the effectiveness and safety of the ultrasound unit.

While the Ultrachek UC170 is not a replacement for professional calibrations or yearly safety checks it will allow the therapist to ensure the accurate operation of their ultrasound. A simple procedure that will take only a few moments to complete and will give the Therapist complete confidence in the effectiveness and safety of their equipment. Each unit comes with a detailed instruction manual and a master test sheet to copy and record the results.
