JAZZ WORKSHOP SERIES

July (13, 16, 20, 23, 24) 2015

Oregon State University campus

The COPI Jazz Workshop Series is designed to give pianists a method to learn and play from jazz charts (lead sheets) as a soloist and/or part of a jazz ensemble. The workshops will cover harmony (chords), jazz styles and improvisation. Each workshop will include instruction followed by interactive rehearsing and “jamming.” Students will be expected to practice at home between workshops. Prior jazz study is not required. This workshop series is designed for pianists high school age and up, including college students and adults. Minimum age is 14.

Director and Instructor: Jill Hickenlooper Jill Hickenlooper is an Oregon native now living near Albany. Jill is an independent piano instructor and performer specializing in jazz, accompanying, and church music. She performs throughout the Willamette Valley as both a jazz soloist and ensemble member. She received her BA in Music Education from George Fox University, and has been an OMTA and Federated Music Clubs teacher/member for many years. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and an adjudicator for various organizations. Instructor: Dr. David Servias David Servias has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Washington and currently teaches music at Oregon State University. Well-regarded as an accompanist and chamber musician, he has served as a staff accompanist at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan for several summers, and has appeared in music departments throughout Washington, Idaho, and Oregon accompanying recitals, juries, lessons, auditions and master classes. Also at home playing jazz and popular music, David has played in church groups, jazz combos and big bands and has performed in restaurants, nightclubs, and on cruise ships. David studied jazz piano with Charles Argersinger and Marc Seales. Assistant Instructor: Bryson Skaar Bryson Skaar holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Oregon State University where he continues to study with Dr. Rachelle McCabe. He works as a church pianist and freelance pianist for soloists, ensembles, and theatre productions in the Corvallis-Philomath area. Bryson is an avid jazz pianist and performs regularly with jazz combos within and outside of OSU. He has found liberty in improvisation that is vital to his relationship with music.
