Plagiarism

- Two types:Intentional & Patch Plagiarism- Patch plagiarism occurs when you do

not take careful notes. This is why you will begin creating an annotated bibliography of your sources as you begin your research.

Dos and Don'ts of Plagiarism- Do not cite well - known facts from reference sources

ex. Dates of WWII and your own interviews/personal experiences.

- Do cite quotations (short enclosed with quotation marks, long in block quotes).

- Summary and paraphrases of an authors ideas/arguments.

- Facts not common knowledge.- Ideas not common knowledge (theories, opinions,

arguable claims)- Statistics/ Someone else’s research findings

SummarizingStating the main ideas of the entire sourceYour summary may be a paragraph or

even a sentenceYou are putting the main idea of the

source in your own wordsIf it is someone else’s idea, it must be

cited

ParaphrasingRepresenting the idea (so must be cited)

of the source in your own words at about the same length as the original.

Changing a few words in a sentence is not a paraphrase

Cannot be too similar to the originalIt is an entire rewriting of the idea from the

source, so MUST be cited
