Plagiarism, Paraphrasing, & Summarizing
Pages 200-208
Plagiarism
- Two types:Intentional & Patch Plagiarism- Patch plagiarism occurs when you do
not take careful notes. This is why you will begin creating an annotated bibliography of your sources as you begin your research.
Dos and Don'ts of Plagiarism- Do not cite well - known facts from reference sources
ex. Dates of WWII and your own interviews/personal experiences.
- Do cite quotations (short enclosed with quotation marks, long in block quotes).
- Summary and paraphrases of an authors ideas/arguments.
- Facts not common knowledge.- Ideas not common knowledge (theories, opinions,
arguable claims)- Statistics/ Someone else’s research findings
(BEWARE)
SummarizingStating the main ideas of the entire sourceYour summary may be a paragraph or
even a sentenceYou are putting the main idea of the
source in your own wordsIf it is someone else’s idea, it must be
cited
ParaphrasingRepresenting the idea (so must be cited)
of the source in your own words at about the same length as the original.
Changing a few words in a sentence is not a paraphrase
Cannot be too similar to the originalIt is an entire rewriting of the idea from the
source, so MUST be cited
