COMMUNICATION: Hope for Employee Retention and Engagement! Using Effective Communication to

Close the Generational Divide

Level: Intermediate

Louise Dickmeyer, People Drive Performance (PDP Solutions)

Employee Engagement in employee-owned companies is a tale of multiple generations and communication is the key

to engagement. Those under 40 have a radically different series of expectations, demands, and requirements of their

employers than their senior counterparts. This younger generation of workers wants constant feedback, recognition,

praise, and communication (served in a variety of ways) to be fully engaged, productive, and part of the culture. Those

workers over the age of 40 are looking to retire within the next decade or two and want security, predictability, and

enjoyment from their work culture. Often change resistant, these workers may be less adaptable to new technologies

and systems, yet often hold the experience and knowledge of best-practices. Progressive employee-owned firms must

have dynamic communications to keep both generations of workers happy, on the job, and productive – together!

Examining these distinctions and the corresponding market trends is the central theme of this presentation. While the

age of the worker must be considered, the engagement of all workers is the best predictive index of company success

both in the short and long-term. The presentation draws examples specifically from employee-owned companies

Windings, Inc. and Dotson Company of Minnesota as well as others as case studies for what works well in employee-

owned cultures.

TOPICS OF INTEREST: Employee-Ownership and Healthcare Management Strategies

Level: Intermediate

Doug Ventling and Troy Cook, Telligen

Healthy employee-owners are key to the growth and prosperity of ESOP companies. Wellness programs that emphasize physical, mental, and financial well-being hold great potential to optimize workplace satisfaction and profitability. In this session, Doug will discuss the principles of population health management and their application to ESOP company health benefit programs. The principles of population health management crosswalk nicely to the Wellness Council of America’s Well Workplace Model, but also provide a framework to support the health of employee-owners beyond wellness. Doug will discuss how population health management strategies can be used by ESOP companies to help them "bend" their healthcare spending by engaging employee-owners around personal opportunities to improve their own health and reduce their healthcare spend. Mr. Ventling will describe a case study of Telligen's health benefits program designed around population health management principles across the spectrum of health.
