1st Place: Dogs2nd Place: Cats3rd Place: Fish

DID YOU KNOW – although the estimated 20-25 million fish ownedby UK pet lovers more than outnumbersthe 8 million dogs and 8 million cats kept as pets, only 10% of households actually keep fish. Taking home first prize is ‘man’s best friend’, with 23% of UK households owning at least one dog, followed by cats in second place with 19%*.

KEEPING FISH – TOP FIVE TIPSWith their hypnotic beauty and bright colours, tropical fish are one of the best stress busters around, and the art of creating the right environment for your fish to flourish in is a rewarding challenge that anyone can enjoy. If you’re new to keeping fish or thinking of giving it a try, follow these five basic rules and you’ll never look back…

1 Don’t over feed your fish – a build-up of too much food can make fish ill and make your tank look dirty.

2 Maintain small but often – regular ‘low-level’ maintenance of your tank is much better than an occasional ‘deep clean’, which can disrupt the environment.

3 Build the right environment – remember to focus on the visual look of your tank, with the right ornaments, rocks and plants all helping fish to remain healthy.

4 Know your fish – make sure you research the behaviour of the kinds of fish you like, some are incompatible and won’t work together.

5 Enjoy your aquarium – don’t forget to take time to enjoy your efforts; creating a thriving tropical fish environment is a challenge, and one worth enjoying.

Based in the modern South Bank Arts Centre at our Cauldwell Street Campus, our art and design courses will help you explore and develop your creative side...

DON’T JUST WEAR THE LATEST TRENDS......design your own (and save money too!)

Getting started with fashion design is easier than you think, and if you love creating new looks with the latest high street trends then why not try setting your own style by picking up some design skills?

Whether it’s customising high street fashion with your own unique twist or reworking a tired old item to give it a new lease of life, the possibilities are endless – and with the latest trends not getting any cheaper, it’s also an easy way to save hundreds of pounds each year!

Change your viewpointIt may sound obvious, but changing the angle of your shot can dramatically change the appearance and composition of your photo – instead of taking the first shot you think of, try moving your position, the angle of camera or even focusing on a different part of your subject. You can end up with something far more interesting.

KIT YOU’LL NEED:A sewing machine

A sewing pattern

Fabric to make your garment

Finishing items like zips and buttons

Thread, sewing needles and other accessories.

GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT...Want to improve your photo technique? Here are three quick tips you can follow to make sure you shoot like a pro, and find out why taking a great photo is more than

just point and click. Try one of these tips, or all three, and see the difference in your photos. Happy clicking!

The rule of thirdsDivide your frame into thirds using a three by three grid of nine equal squares or rectangles – by placing the main element of your image (for example your subject’s face, a building etc.) along one of the vertical lines, you’ll achieve a more interesting composition in your photo.

Get the right balanceBy following the rule of thirds you’ll find that your main element is now off-centre which, depending on what you’re shooting, can leave a slight ‘void’ in the rest of your photo. Placing less important elements in this space can help to provide a balance to your shot.

THE WEB GOES MOBILE...

We all know how popular smartphones have become in the last five years, and with close to a quarter of all web browsing now on a mobile

device* it’s no surprise to see the desktop computer versions of websites and everyday software applications taking more and more

cues from the world of mobile.

Hidden navigationA button with three horizontal lines is increasingly all we need to represent a whole menu of further options – saving space and ‘decluttering’ your site.

Simple iconsOn a small screen, you need to get your point across without lots of text. A picture speaks a thousand words and simple icons and images are making their way from mobile to desktop.

Grid layoutsThe shape of your smartphone or tablet means information needs to organised in a different way – elements are often set out in a grid or ‘modular’ format to make things clearer.

Easy cupcake recipe...

In the past, we might have only associated cupcakes with children’s birthday parties, but

today cupcakes are one of the most fashionable items of food around. From TV and movies

to the high street, the ‘artisan’ cupcake is everywhere – so if you’re as in love with them

as we are, here’s a quick and easy recipe for some simple but delicious vanilla cupcakes if

you’re in need of a treat...

Ingredients – what you’ll need…

110g/4oz butter or margarine, softened at room temperature

110g/4oz caster sugar

2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten

1 tsp vanilla extract

110g/4oz self-raising flour

1-2 tbsp milk

For the buttercream icing

140g/5oz butter, softened

280g/10oz icing sugar

1-2 tbsp milk

a few drops food colouring

The method...

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases.

2. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale. Beat in the eggs a little at

a time and stir in the vanilla extract.

3. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon, adding a little milk until the mixture is of

a dropping consistency. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until they are half full.

4. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until golden-brown on top and a skewer

inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes,

then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

5. For the buttercream icing, beat the butter in a large bowl until soft. Add half the icing

sugar and beat until smooth.

6. Then add the remaining icing sugar with one tablespoon of the milk, adding more milk

if necessary, until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

7. Add the food colouring and mix until well combined.

8. Spoon the icing on to the top of the cupcakes or, for an artistic flourish, use a piping

bag and star nozzle to pipe the icing using a spiralling motion onto the cup cakes in a

large swirl.

9. Enjoy with family, friends, or as a little treat for yourself!

THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

The meanings behind different kinds of flowers has its origins in the Victorian age, where the manners and traditions of the time meant it was frowned upon to declare your feelings and passions aloud. They developed a range of different meanings in order to send messages through the colour, arrangement and number of flowers in their bouquets.

CAR TERMINOLOGY

Get up to speed with our short guide to some basic car terms...

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)

A system which uses sensors to prevent the car’s wheels

‘locking-up’ and skidding by rapidly releasing and applying the brakes.

CYLINDERWhere your car’s fuel is ignited to drive the car – the explosive force pulls a piston downwards in the cylinder which creates the movement that moves the car.

REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RPM)

The engine drives the crankshaft which in turn drives

the wheels – RPM is used as a measurement to show the

speed it is turning.

BODYThe car’s body is the shape of the vehicle – the exterior ‘shell’ that gives each car its

distinctive look.

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD)

Cars which use the engine to drive all four wheels rather than

just two. Often found on off-roader vehicles, this gives better

grip in slippery conditions.

SPARK PLUGA component that creates the spark which ignites the

fuel to drive the car.

BRAKE PADWhen you apply the brakes, a brake pad pushes against a disc attached to your wheel creating friction which slows

down your movement.

HORSEPOWER (HP)A measurement to show the

power produced by an engine. One horsepower is the power needed to lift a 550-pound

weight one foot in one second.

ODOMETER (OR MILEOMETER)

An instrument that indicates the number of miles a vehicle has travelled. It is illegal to tamper with the odometer reading.

CHASSISThis is the skeleton of the

car to which the body, wheels, engine and other machinery are attached.

POWER STEERINGA steering system that uses a separate motor or engine power to reduce the effort

necessary to turn the front wheels.

TRACTIONThe amount of friction between the tyre and

the ground.

Rock or metal? E.g. Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Muse

GO FOR ELECTRIC

This offers volume and a range of sounds, from crunchy ‘shreds’ to spiky riffs – but remember you’ll also need to buy an amplifier (‘amp’), although there’s world of effects pedals out there to create some really varied sounds.

Singer-songwriter or folk? E.g. Damien Rice, Jack Johnson or Bob Dylan

GO FOR ACOUSTIC (STEEL STRING)

This offers a rich and clear sound, and doesn’t need any additional equipment – just pick up and play! However, better quality can be achieved by spending a little more on your guitar – in other words buy cheap, sound cheap!

Classical? E.g. Andrés Segovia, Julien Bream or David Russell

GO FOR CLASSICAL (NYLON STRING)

This offers a warm and mellow sound, and although its origins lie in the very first guitars invented, the ‘modern’ classical guitar we know today was developed in the 19th century. These guitars are often the cheapest type but are great to start out with.
