Job Description – Maintenance Carpenter/Locksmith Basic Function: Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Maintenance and Operations, performs journey-level carpentry and mill work in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing and finishing of District buildings and facilities; estimates supply needs and costs; orders supplies; performs skilled locksmithing work in the repair, adjustment and changing of keyed and combination locks; installs and maintains door hardware. Representative Duties: Essential Functions: Performs journey-level carpentry and mill work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities; assures compliance with building, health and safety codes and standards. Constructs, alters, repairs and inspects structures including cabinets, shelves, partitions, counters, doors, furniture, paneling, window frames, scaffolds, shelving, stairways, wheelchair ramps, bookcases and a variety of special fixtures. Maintains and repairs woodwork in District school facilities; match materials for color, grain or texture, cut, fit and hang doors, windows, sashes and screens; repairs floorings; installs and repairs roofing, drywall and plaster. Inspects, maintains and repairs locks; dismantles and rebuilds various types of locks and change lock combinations; repairs lock cylinders, replaces work tumblers, springs and other parts. Makes duplicate copies of keys and issues and maintains District-wide record of keys issued to various schools and offices; maintains master and duplicate key files and records; prepares keys by duplication or from key codes; develops key codes. Repairs, replaces and maintains a variety of door closers, panic bars, door holders, hinges and installs latches and deadbolts. Plans and layout assigned work; establishes priorities for projects and repairs. Installs, repairs and replaces walls, flooring, ceilings and roofing on buildings; lays a variety of floors including wood, vinyl, quarry, ceramic and concrete. Evaluates buildings and equipment maintenance needs; reads and interprets trade manuals, blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, instructions and guides. Provides work direction and guidance to helpers as assigned. Operates a variety of carpentry equipment including table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, routers, sanders, jointers, drills, nail guns, panel saws, compressors, and jig saws; maintains tools and equipment in safe working conditions; operates a District vehicle and forklift to conduct work. Researches and evaluates products for best sources; purchases selected parts, materials and equipment; assists in labor and material estimations for projects; prepares and maintains work orders, records and reports related to work performed. Installs acoustical tile to walls and ceilings. Trains, assigns and reviews the work of others as assigned; assists other maintenance personnel as required. Breaks up, digs out and patches existing concrete structures; mixes, pours and finishes concrete used in repairing structures, including foundations, sidewalks, ramps, curbs and gutters; constructs wood forms for concrete projects. Other Duties: Performs related duties as assigned. Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures. Technical aspects of field of specialty. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Basic record-keeping techniques. Federal, State and local building codes and regulations. Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment. Proper lifting techniques. Shop math applicable to the building trades. Ability to: Performs a wide variety of journey-level carpentry in the maintenance and repair of District buildings and facilities. Performs journey-level locksmithing work. Interprets, explains and applies codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities. Effectively and safely operates a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade. Uses the tools and equipment necessary in the repair and installation of locks. Duplicates keys and maintains comprehensive records of those issued. Interprets blueprints, shop drawings, sketches and work orders. Understands and follows oral and written directions. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Estimates adequate amounts of time, labor and materials needed for project completion. Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides quickly and accurately. Works independently with little direction. Analyzes situations accurately and adopts an effective course of action. Observes legal and defensive driving practices. Operates a District vehicle. Maintains routine records. Performs heavy physical labor.

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to sufficient education, experience, and/or training to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Typically, this would be gained through: High school diploma required supplemented by completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program and two years journey-level carpentry experience involving construction, repair, alteration, forming, framing and finishing, including experience performing locksmithing duties. Licenses Requirements: A valid California Driver’s License. Working Conditions: Environment: Indoor and outdoor shop environment, driving from site to site to conduct work, subject to noise from equipment operation. Physical Demands: Heavy physical labor. Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Climbing, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, crawling. Reaching above head, over shoulders and horizontally. Pulling, pushing and carrying heavy objects. Climbing ladders and working from heights. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment used in the carpentry and locksmithing trades. Seeing to read and perform carpentry and locksmithing work. Hazards: Working on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops. Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber. Working around and with machinery having moving parts. Fumes from paints and solvents. Power saws and flying debris or nails. Salary Range: Range 128
