Please Dont Leave Miss Louisiana
Their stares bore into my back. They seemed dull and dark compared to the
other people I know. The hallway-white with narrow walls, like it was trapping us
- was filled with a sea of faces I failed to recognise. It does not worry me though
theyre not important to me. I dont care anymore what people think or say about
me I have got used to it now. Its been a year and no matter how hard they try
they cant take it away from me. They still look like theyre out to get me.
Sometimes I swear I could see needles and batons concealed in their pockets.
I walk to class and as my tanned hand opens the door something flashes out of
the corner of my eye.
I sit down in my desk at the back, oddly enough the room has no windows, its
small and white. No one dares to sit next to me. Halfway through class, I give
up. Am I ever going to need to know what happens when sodium and nitrogen
react? I look out at the window overlooking the green pastures of the oval. I can
see the little individual grass leaves swaying in the wind.
My grandmother always said I was special. One day she told me Arrianne, you
have a very special gift and you must never let it go no matter how many times
people try to take it away from you.
She was right. However it was not until after her death, my gift was realised. At
my grandmothers funeral, I could see people in the cemetery. At first I thoughtthe soldiers in full military dress, were visiting other graves, but they looked too
young to be wearing clothes from decades ago. No one looked at them, only
me. One boy caught me staring and started to walk towards me, I noticed he
had a bad limp-most likely battle wounds.
Good day miss, He told my ten year old self, my names Eugene, but people
just call me Gene.
Hi Gene.

The people were whispering now and I could hear snippets of conversation.
Yeah shes totally crazy. In class she was talking to herself.
Who is she talking about? Theres no one there.
Shes just a crazy gypsy. They all think they can see the dead and stuff. They
looked at me like they were going to hurt me. No matter how much they thought
I was crazy they couldnt kill me right? I then remembered what Gran had said. I
was special and people where going to try to take it away from me, take Gene
from me. People were still talking about me, but they moved towards their next
class.
A year later now and people still think I am crazy, I am that crazy gypsy with the
imaginary friend. They dont understand. How could they? They had no power
like me. They constantly thought I was talking to myself, and they ridiculed me
for it. I could never see the problems they had with gypsy people, I mean Im not
even a full one. Gran was.
The bell signaling the end of class rang, Gene and I walked into the hallway
People began to look but we ignored them. Suddenly a man came up to me.
Its time for your medication Arrianne. he said in a soothing tone.
Medication? Who did this guy think I was?
I think you have the wrong person sir. I said to the man.
No, I dont you need to come with me, his hand now clamped on my upper
arm. He tried to pull me down the white corridor. I struggled in his grasp.
Let me go please I whimpered. No reply. We were coming towards a door
now. I was desperate.
Help me Gene, make him let go of me. I dont know what Gene did, but the
man suddenly let me go and fell to the floor.
You need to run Arrianne, theyre going to come after you. I looked at Gene.
Go Annie. Run he yelled. I had no idea what he was talking about, but nether
the less I ran, out the door and into the nearby woods. When I stopped I heard
dogs barking. They were getting closer, and I could now here men shouting.
Who were they? I wondered. There was a crunching sound. Turning around,

men came out of the bushes. Struggling to move back, the men in uniform
stepped closer, forming a circle around me.
Were not going to hurt you. A young man said. Funny, I thought he looks
exactly like Gene. I let him take my hand in his. And then I was surrounded by
sea of black.
Breaking news now, the reporter says, a 15 year old girl has tried to escape
Fairhaven Psychiatric Asylum in Louisiana, she stabbed one of the carers and
then ran into nearby woods, investigators say her schizophrenic condition,
caused her to hallucinate. She was brought back to the facility and is
recovering. Im Jessica Wilson, Ill have more for you next hour.
