    METTA SUTTA ON LOVING KINDNESS

    (Sutta-nipta, Uraga-

    vagga 8.)

    Karaya atthakusalena This is what should do the one who is skilled in goodness,

    yan ta santa pada abhisamecca: And who seeks to attain the path of peace:sakko uj ca sj ca Let him be able and upright, entirely upright,

    suvaco c assa mudu anatimn, 1. Of soft speech, gentle and not conceited.

    santussako ca subharo ca Contented and easily supported,

    appakicco ca sallahukavutti Free of duties and of unburdened livelihood,santindriyo ca nipako ca With his senses calmed and prudent, not proud,appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho, 2. without greed, when going his round in families.

    na ca khudda samcare kici, Let him not do the slightest wrong actionyena vi pare upavadeyy. that the wise men would later reprove.

    Sukhino v khemino hontu (Thinking:)May all beings be happy and calm,sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt: 3. May all beings be at ease.

    ye keci pabht atthi Whatever beings there may be;tas v thvar v anavases Whether they are feeble or strong, omitting none,

    dgh v ye mahant v the long or the great,

    majjhim rassak aukathl, 4. medium, short or stout,

    dih v ye v addih, The seen and the unseen,ye ca dre vasanti avidre, Those dwelling near and far away,bht v sambhaves v,- Those born or to-be-born-

    sabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt. 5. May all beings be at ease.

    Na paro para nikubbetha, Let none deceive another,ntimaetha katthacina kaci, nor despise any being in any place.vyrosan paighasa Let none through anger or ill-willnamaassa dukkha iccheyya. 6. Wish any harm upon another.

    Mt yath niya putta Just as a mother protects with her lifeyus ekaputtam anurakkhe, Her child, her only child,evam pi sabbabhtesu So let him cherishmnasam bhvaye aparima. 7. all living beings with a boundless heart.

    Metta ca sabbalokasmi Let him radiate kindness over the whole world:

    mnasam bhvaye aparima Upwards to the skies and downwards to the depths,uddha adho ca tiriya ca And also across them;asambdha avera asapatta. 8. unbounded, freed from hatred and enmity.

    Tiha cara nisinno v Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down,

    sayno v yvat assa vigatamiddho, Freed from drowsiness,eta sati adhiheyya, One should sustain this attentiveness.brahmam eta vihra idha-m-hu. 9. This is said to be the sublime abiding.

    Dii ca anupagamma By not holding to abstract views,

    slav dassanena sampanno The virtuous one, having clarity of vision,

    kmesu vineyya gedha, Being released from all sense desires,na hi jtu gabbhaseyya punar et ti 10. Is not born again from a mother`s womb.
