Why people write poetry?People write poetry because they want to express something about themselves. At least it nearly always starts out like that. Some people want to write about big grand things, important things, political things, aspects of nature, the eternal aspects of the sky, the universe or whatever. But there is always a sense around poetry that you're expressing something that is yours. It's a bit of an elusion because we're very social beings. So in the end you never really express something that's purely yours; you're always expressing something social.

Das GedichtMit dem Begriff „Gedicht“ wurde ursprünglich alles schriftlich Abgefasste bezeichnet. Auch hier fand im 18. Jahrhundert eine Begriffsfestigung statt: Seitdem wird der Begriff nur noch für den poetischen Bereich verwendet. Das Wort „Dichtung“ hat aber im volkstümlichen Gebrauch noch etwas von seiner ursprünglichen Bedeutung erhalten.Ein umfangreiches, oft mehrteiliges oder als Zyklus angelegtes dichterisches Werk mit lyrischen und epischen Elementen ohne verbindliche metrischeStruktur wird als Langgedicht oder Poembezeichnet.

LyrikDie Trias Lyrik – Epik – Dramatik unterschied bereits Aristoteles in seiner „Poetik“, allerdings wird der Ordnungsbegriff ‚Lyrik‘ erst seit dem 18. Jahrhundert als Gattungsbezeichnung verwendet. Der Begriff ist heute – anders als in der antiken Literatur – relativ unbestimmt und wird seit dem 19. Jahrhundert (fälschlich) oft synonym mit dem Wort ‚Poesie‘ (Dichtung) verwendet. Man kann aber sagen, dass man unter Lyrik eine literarische Hauptgattung versteht, die man auch als singbare Dichtung bezeichnen kann.
