The first skates were pieces of sharpened bone strapped to the feet and were employed to get about without expending so much energy, something which would have been extremely worthwhile to the people living in the flat, icy landscape of southern Finland. Alvar Aalto's Paimio chair (1930) Alvar Aalto 1937 Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (3 February 1898 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer, as well as a sculptor and painter. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware. Architecture and Finland The Jyvskyl Region is home to many buildings designed by the legendary architect Alvar Aalto I particularly like the style of the folk people as they look distinctive; I may try using this to inspire me for my designs. For me the long decades of ice skating and the history of ice skating is a memorable part of Finland so I could look at designing costumes to fit the sport using Sami flag colours. I now have a really solid colour palette as I can use the Sami colours as they are used historically and contemporary. I think the highly decorative appliqu is very distinguishing so this is something I will include in my designs. In my research I have found that a lot of the shapes are curvy, for example in the architecture (chairs), fir trees, folk art and in the Sami costumes. This has given me the idea to focus on shape / form throughout my designs and how I can link it to my research.
