Publications are mainly related to the Wing project which was at an exhibition mid 2012.

I am currently participating in my second Italian language course at the university.

topic - entrance area

The door manufacturer TOPIC asked to develop a concept for the exhibition in Nuermberg: frontale.

Briefing:

In 9 month of project work with TOPIC and later in cooperation with Corian specialist and industrial manufacturer Hasenkopf, was the concept realized and ready for the exhibition.

The result is a solution for the entry situation in an integrated approach, reflecting the values of the company and representing a omni-functional platform.

05Three mayor topics were chosen to address, depending on importance and relevance.

This map revealed relations and pointed to gaps and needs within the System of which the human was the central part.

Abstract | Conceptualize

After a three month research period and data gathering the results were brought together in a System-Map to comprehend the bigger picture and extract the central areas of opportunity.

06From System-Map to Tangible Idea

Three mayor solutions were found and brought into a object related context. Now the field of exploration was defined and the fun could start.

Regardless of many other challenges which arose and were solved, the focus lied manly on these three.

By formulating the challenges, a tangable problem was found.

07Corian is homogenous throughout the whole thickness of the material and so it can be easily repaired or renewed.

Through careful selection and combination of parallel and mirrored lines was a harmonic asymmetry achieved.

The form follows ergonomic and spacious requirements to ensure proper accessibility from 5th percentile to the 95th percentile individual and wheelchair users.

12Shelter, light, intercom and mail box are just the basic functions included in this structural platform. A lot more is possible on individual behalf.

The wooden part in the center is a mail box and storage unit for packet mail, which can be gained access through the back.

For the house number and roof light the translucent properties of Corian were used by reducing the wall thickness to 3mm and lights were placed inside double walled unit.

feat - preserve food quality

In a workshop in September 2012 held by EunSook Won [born in Soul Korea and Head of the design department in Houston Texas] we were asked to address social challenges we are often confronted with, but became over time almost numb to the fact. I used to work for four years in the hospitality business which is responsible for 11 million liters of food waste each year. Especially in the catering business we are talking about large amounts of good food that ends in the waste over a short period of time. Extra meals almost always ends as waste because of law regulations which are at the end of an event not met anymore. So how can the lifespan of prepared food be extended and the law regulati-ons be met to feed people instead of the garbage bin?

fEAT unites many functions of other devices. The initial investment might be higher than for other containers, but will be returned by making other equipment obsolete.

From the interviews and legal texts I learned that the three major factors for food quality are temperature, food hygiene and time.

As part of the research I interviewed three large catering agencies in Austria which wanted to remain anonymous, but were really helpful since they are too aware of that problem.

Understanding the Situation | Food Preservation and Hygiene15

turning point: WASTE“What are the challenges as a catering business to pass the food to poor kitchens?”

“Mainly two things.First: By law we are responsible for the food quality and at the end of an event we don‘t know if we still meet this

standard. Second: As a business it is more expensive to take care of the food including all the equipment needed, than to throw it away.”

“How is the quality of the food guaranteed before the event and what are the regulations?”

“The law is specific when it comes to temperature and time.Cooked meals like meat needs to stay above 74°C and cold dishes like desserts and salads under 4°C.” “What equipment do you need to control these factors?”

“ Chafer racks are just serving containers, we need a mobile heating cabinet, food carriers which insulate and protect the food and depending on the dish maybe more equipment.”

CATERERME

Page 21: Portfolio | Florian Gerlach

In every area where transportation and preservation of prepared food is required, fEAT will be of help. From catering over food delivery to households.

The unique set of functions of fEAT combined in one portable product is also very compelling to the private consumer sector.

The cross section reveals the semi-conductor which provides temperature control for warm and cold dishes. fEAT has the similar size of a Chafer, but comes with thermo insulation.

When fEAT is plugged in an energy source, the Peltier Elements keep the food warm/cold. If the container is unplugged, the temperature difference among inside and

outside generates energy for the sensors and display. Even in an unplugged state the important values will be monitored and recorded.

Sensors in the case constantly messure time and temperature and display the values on a graph at the top of the container.

fEAT can be lifted to create easier access to the food and reveals a space to place two plates for the serving cutlery.

To hinder overheating of the Peltier Elements, the stand keeps a cooling gap and secures a constant air exchange.

ducati - new opportunities

SVELTO for Ducati is the result of a project were we developed for one of our favorite brands a product, that reaches in new innovative markets which are promising for the future, are a good fit to the character of the brand and tackles sustainability issues. The growing ebike market is mainly dominated by bicycle producers. The uncompelling image of a bicycle with an extra box is the main perception of these products. There is the opportunity to define a whole new vehicle class, which builds around compact size, electro mobility and sport outdoors. In many ways these values are the same as the original idea of a Italian motorbike from the 1920th. These core values were transformed in the passed years to the big, immense powerful motorbikes we know from today. I don‘t want to judge this development, but it certainly reveals an area of opportunity which is not covered by bicycles nor by scooters. SVELTO is the attempt to inherit these values and add new ones of a dense urban lifestyle that plays in a world of growing sustainable needs.

Filling the gap between bicycles and motorbikes with an specific class of electronic vehicle is a great chance for a motorcycle producer with clear competence in this field.

Ducati has the know-how of light weight, two wheeled, motorized products that would make it easier to realize this new opportunity.

The form reflects the sporty nature, compact size and performance. It is perfect for urban surroundings and short to intermediate distances.
