Yangzhou is a modern city with the history of over two thousand years,so the construction of the museum would be of great importance.Under this situation,we need a building connecting both old and new civilization.

Generation of Form

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.The cylindrical museum building is wider at the top than the bottom, was conceived as a "temple of the spirit".

The site is near the famous scenery.

Buildings around are in a traditional form.

Space for human activities is availuable.

The Pattern of VisitFirst:Browsing This pattern is for the visitors who don't have much time,they can just follow the main traffic line around the courtyard and visit the most important part of the museum.

Second:NormalThis pattern is for the local citizens and the visitors who have much time,they can visit all of the exhibition halls here and experience the long history of this city.

Third:ResearchThis pattern is for historians and those who are professional in studying history,they can do some reports and discuss with other professors after visiting the whole museum.

The old gymnasium was designed in a concise style which have great value to be reserved.Combined with the concept of 'loft',I make the following reconstruction: dismantling all the old wall,which will expose all the steel structure truss outside;using transparent stalinite as enclosed structure and arrange well-proportioned white cube inside the building,which could be used as stores and exhibition halls.In this way,we could remain the original style of the old building and make it much more vigorous.So the old gym together with the museum will make up a cultural leisure center.

Building Form and Massing

The daylighting and ventilation of the courtyard mostly depend on the glass roof.The delicate elliptical skylight filtrates natural light into pure light which would make people there have a feeling of mystery.

DESIGN OF COMMERCIAL COMPLEX

Yangzhou,Chinese historical and cultural city,is known for its beautiful natural and cultural environment.Due to its history,Yangzhou has become one of the important tourism cities in China.Yangzhou is known as 'Huai left names,Penny West good',and has won the UN Habitat Award.Slender West Lake-Yangzhou's most popular tourist destination,is located in the old town of Yangzhou,along with most of other famous sights.Although Slender West Lake has created a city Humanities and the natural beauty of the famous,Yangzhou also felt the pressure of the overall development of how to strike balance between the protection of the old town and the construction of the new city,history and modern way of life,which is still a major challenge for the city.

The old town and the new city have different characteristics.The old streets and old buildings of the old town is well protected,while the new city is featured by the commercial,cultural,and industrial development.Walking in the old town,we can see small bridges,blue bricks,small tiles,wharf walls and salt merchants' mansions.However,the new city is reflected in the modern scene,especially in the "Moon Lake" as the center of the western area,the majesty of the International Exhibition Center,Yangzhou Museum,modern residential areas and business districts.They look like pearls inlay around the "Moon Lake".

Study of the Project

1 In order to make a commercial building full of vitality,a

high density of building is necessary,so in this project,I try

to use every field of the site.

2 The function of this building is decided by some other

buildings around the site and is also influenced by the

specific location of Yangzhou.

3 The project strickly follows the building restriction line

and the building height restriction,so it would satisfy the

requirement of urban planning.

4 By combining the space both inside and outside

the building,an interesting space form is generated,so

consumers would not only be interested in shopping here

but also entertain themselves by walking around.

5 It is also very important to make an appropriate route,so I

strengthen each part of the building to make sure that all the

consumers here could go to every corner convenniently.So

several corridors are setted in the project,even in the sky.

6 By analysing the sight and the feeling of human,the

changeful architectural surface is generated.

Community center is the place to offer all kinds of entertainment and cultural activities,most of the service objects are community residents,but it is also open to other consumers at the same time.A community center have several characteristics,timeliness--it has specific consumers during different period;placeness--each space has its own function,so it is necessary to divide area of sound;functionality--specific activity matches with specific function and the requirement of space.

Container:appliance for holding obejects.It provides the best place and space for both life and activities.

Porcelain:appliance with magnetism.We build a community center matches with the old town to attract amount of people here to participate in activities.

The communi ty cen te r locates in the old town of Yangzhou,which is ful l of culture,so it would be necessary to study how to make it more attractive.

The old town has its specific attraction because of its long history and rich culture.So it would be necessary to show respect to the style of buildings here.

PROJECT METHOD ——CONSTRUCT AXIS

Axis is not doubt the spirit of Chinese traditional architecture,it distinguishes the buildings here from the western ones because of the concept of group reflected by the axis.

Courtyard is an enclosed area, often a space enclosed by a building that is open to the sky.A courtyard is able to generate an open space,half closed space or closed space.

We decide to design a two-layer building with slope roof in order to make the project matches the buildings neraby,several corridors and external stairways would make it more optimized.

We settle the square and stage right in the intersection of two axes,which means the center of the site and it would gather the largest amount of people here to participate in many activities.

Yangzhou is a city associate with water for almost a thousand years,so it is importatnt to embellish water in the project,there would be advantages of both visual sense and econogical technology.

Both courtyard and garden play an important role in Chinese traditional architecture,the most important part is to combine these two elements to make them harmonious and unified.A garden is a place for visiting which could soften the rigid edge of buildings.

In 486BC,Han ditch was built by King Wu for military use,then it became the beginning of ancient canal , which provided the prerequisite for water transport of Yangzhou.

The ancient canal in Yangzhou is the oldest part of beijing-hangzhou canal,it has a length of 30 kilometers starts from Yangzhou Pavillion.

Cao river locates three kilometers away in the north of Yangzhou.Its original name was grass river because of its function of transporting grass in ancient time.

Small Qinhuai river is the most integral ancient river since the construction of city in Ming dynasty,it represents the rich culture and old history which is the proud of Yangzhou.

The old town locates in the east of Yangzhou and most of the buildings there are in the traditional form.As early as Tang Dynasty,Yangzhou had become one of the most important habors for trading,so the city phylogeny is also the history of developing rivers.The small qin huai river locates in the center of the old town in Yangzhou and it is the only one river there which has become the water axis of the old town,so the government now pays much attention to protect this river.

There are four important traditional buildings in the site which need to be protected.Although there is not much grassland here some ancient trees with great value sporadically locate in the site and several ancient wells,the symbol of traditional culture,are even still being used nowadays.

The figure-ground of the site is the basis of planning for urban,by analysing the figure-ground,we could find out open space and narrow space including park and square,street and alley.Then we are able to make an overall planning in order to deal with the space in project.

The buildings in the site are the most important part in this project,because they are able to embody the traditional style of the old town.So we find out the traditional buildings that need to be improved and the terrible buildings that need to be reconstructed,and then a uniform design of planning would be available.

The bank of small Qinhuai river is relative low-lying with an approximate height between 3.3m to 3.6m.The adjacent road is 1.3m to 1.8m higher than the river which would break the sense of hydrophilia.Because of the important role of river in traditional life,most alleys are perpendicular to the riverway.Seeing from the cross section,the west river bank is higher than the east bank because of city wall and it has an apparent altitude difference from the periphery to the center of the river,so it would be possible for us to make a rich and interesting space in the project.

All the buildings in the site are primary in three types of structure.Most commercial buildings in the north of Cuiyuan bridge are of frame structure,buildings in the middle part of the site are of wood and brick structure,masonry-concrete structure is the subsidiary one.

First kind of style:traditional buildings which are perfectly preserved.Second:traditional buildings which are not perserved very well.Third:modern buildings which are not conflict to traditional style.Fourth:terrible buildings strictly conflict to traditional style.

The buildings in the site were constructed during different period in history,most of them were built in Qing dynasty and Republican period.These buildings need to be dealt with cautiously because of their great value.

The main idea of this project started from dealing with Small Qinhuai r iver .We take fu l l advantage of the river to create a characteristic space along the river and divide this area into five parts.At the same time,each part could reflect the traditional style of the old town because we try to remain all the old and excellent buildings here.By combining natural landscape and cultural landscape,we strengthen the characteristic of this area,so you could experience the rich culture of this city if you strolled in this building group.

We bring in water traffic in order to connect the site with peripheral rivers to create a rounded traffic system.We also broaden old narrow road so that it could meet the requirement of new function.All the motor vehicles are strictlylimited in the north and south part of the site,and a footpath along the river is built so that a l l the v is tors could enjoy themselves stolling here to see all the scenery without worried about traffic.

By combining several insular space,we successfully creat a continuous space which provides consumers here with larger space for activities and this is also beneficial for communicating between areas.

By introducing water traffic and walking traffic,a comprehensive grid system of traffic with fewer blocking would be created and it will bring out open space and convenient traffic of the city.
