ense and Sensibility Talk with language of color, texture and symbol

This is my art class final project under the theme “POWER”, which I think perfectly sums up the progress I made in art throughout last academic year. I started out as a collage of objects that represent the power influencing this world. Einstein is the emblem of science and rational thinking of human beings, whereas the floral background symbols artistic beauty. In my point of view, science and art have always been the measurements of civilization. The combination of them balances this world as one in perpetual pursuit of beauty, intelligence and morals. It also applies to my personal life, which is dominated by the passion for both science and art. By selecting symbols, arranging the contrast, and eventually blending them together, I learned how to convey ideas with brushes and paint.

ense and Sensibility

The eyes are the parts I spent most time on. I learned that there has to be a focus point of one successful painting.

I experimented with different ways to paint the hair, and finally figured out a dry old big brush would produce the texture I want.

It was the nose that taught me what a magic black and white can wield. I first realized the true meaning of “light determines the shape”.

Learn to talk with language of color, texture and symbol

The original texture is of very fine cloth. Having tried many materials, I ended up using a piece of handbag fragment to print. There is no rule in finding beauty.

The texture here is suppose to be of a soft cotton blanket. Again I realize what a great range of texture can black and white do.

A piece of sky is ripped off and put here. After a lot of failures, I switched to the tiniest brush and eventually got the ripped edge right.

Painting for me is a process of recreation of life. Any piece of beauty can be picked up from any where, at any time and store in the paintings. Therefore, I paint from both real life and imagination. It also feels great to see how my ability of recording what I think increases over time.

 ans Shoe Design

This is the first time I applied art into practical use. Looking at the completely white shoes provided by Vans, I decided to pick the theme of photography. These shoes are unified in theme and matching in color, but in details I put some interesting difference.

Those are the lanterns I designed for Chinese Lanterns Festival. I painted lotus flowers on a glass jar and put candles inside. For the moss, I covered my palms with dark green paint and then print them on the glass. It turned out extremely well. Art is such a creative process that any materials can be used!

ress Design Learning the Rules of Beauty

These are some of my dress designs, mostly simple sketches as a result from unpredicted thinking sparks. Dress design is actually the part where I learned the importance of rules and order in the world of art.

This is a vase that I recently designed and painted. My friend gave me this unfinished vase from her ceramics class and asked me to paint it. Based on the shape of the vase, I decided to add some Chinese element into the design. Therefore I chose koi fish and lotus flower, filled with Chinese blue. The color of the fish also makes them stand out and the whole piece more interesting.
