Post-Impressionism Grows out of the Impressionist movement Interested in light and color but also design and composition of a painting Georges Seurat Created his paintings based on scientific techniques Georges Seurat, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 1884 Did 40 preliminary sketches for this work He placed each figure very carefully The color was applied in tiny dots, each about the size of an eraser The viewers eyes visually mix these dots together Pointillism: colors are applied to the canvas in small dots, producing a vibrant surface Spent a lot of time in cafes, cabarets, and theatres He drew caricatures of the people at these places He often portrayed dancers and circus people Many of his paintings are of the night life in Paris Toulouse-Lautrec The purpose of the prints was to advertise the dancers skills Moulin RougeToulouse-Lautrec made the Moulin Rouge famous through his posters Vincent Van Gogh Began painting at the age of 27 Went through many stages of severe depression Considered a failure to art critics and sold only one painting during his lifetime The Starry Night, 1889 A peaceful village under the glowing stars The stars seem to move violently, churning thru the universe Painted while in an asylum
