Postojna Cave has been attracting crowds of admirers from all over the world for over two hundred years. Today the known parts of the Postojna spelaean system comprise 21 km, which means that Postojna Cave is the largest show cave of the Classic Karst in Europe. Its picturesque and mysterious underground world is also a prime location for special cave adventures. In Proteus Cave Vivarium, in the immediate vicinity of Postojna Cave, visitors also see some of the most interesting cave-dwelling animals.

Just 10 km from the Postojna Cave is the location of the Predjama Castle, one the most fascinating castles in the world. For more than 800 years it has perched proudly half way up a 123-metre cliff.

Below Predjama Castle, there is the Predjama Cave System, which offers many possibilities for adventures, including special tours of the cave with suitable equipment.

Right next to the entrance to Postojna Cave is where the Jamski dvorec Mansion is located. It has been renovated into a modern event and culinary centre and is the perfect venue for unforgettable events. You can also pamper your palate in the nearby self-service restaurant Briljant and in the new Proteus Restaurant in the centre of Postojna.

Postojna is situated in the south-west of Slovenia, almost exactly on the arithmetic intersection of the route between Ljubljana, Portorož, Rijeka and Trieste. Important roads have been crossing this region for millennia. Today, the Vienna - Venice railway line runs through here, with connections to Zagreb, Salzburg, Rijeka, and Koper. Postojna can be reached by car on the A1 motorway from the directions of Ljubljana, Koper or Trieste (exit Postojna). The journey to Postojna from Rijeka and Ljubljana takes less than an hour, from Venice and Zagreb about two hours, while the drive from Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Dubrovnik or Belgrade will take you only a few hours. Not too far from Postojna, there are numerous international airports: Ljubljana, Trieste, Zagreb, Pula, Rijeka.

Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close.

A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors (more than 35 million of them in over 200 years).

Did you know that:- the cave railway has existed since 1872 and electric lighting since 1883- the oldest underground post office in the world has been here since 1899- among 35 million visitors there were more than 150 state presidents, kings and emperors

A visit to Postojna Cave starts at the entrance station of the cave railway. The train first passes through an artificial tunnel, built when a double track railway was constructed (in 1964). The first natural tunnel is black and sooty, the consequence of a fuel dump explosion during the second world war. Next comes the Gothic Hall, richly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, and the Ballroom, for 180 years a venue for events of various kinds. While you are viewing Nature’s sculptures, the train carries you for two more kilometres further into the cave, to the Great Mountain, where you alight and continue your visit on foot. The path leads past the Great Mountain (also known as Calvary), across the Russian Bridge into the Beautiful Caves, through Spaghetti, White and Red Halls, all the way to the Brilliant Passage, where the most famous stalagmite and symbol of Postojna Cave stands: the Brilliant. The route then leads past the aquarium containing human fish and into the Concert Hall, where you learn about the only underground post office in the world, buy some souvenirs, reboard the train and return to the surface.

Proteus Cave Vivarium is located inside the Passage of New Signatures, 50 metres from the entrance into the Postojna Cave. It consists of two sections – the research section and the exhibition one. The research section, the so-called laboratory, is used for scientific work and research. The speleobiological exhibition presents special features of the subterranean environment and the most characteristic representatives of Slovene cave animals.

Postojna Cave is the cradle of a special branch of biology – speleobiology; tens of different new animals, perfectly adapted to life in the darkness, have namely been discovered and recorded here.

Although scientists for a long time believed that life without the sun or the seasons was not possible, numerous animal species that inhabit the underground world of Postojna have proven the contrary. By far the best known inhabitant of the Postojna underground world is undoubtedly the proteus (Proteus anguinus), often called the human fish, it is however not the only one at all.

3. PredjaMa CastLe

The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-metre high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle.

As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbour for themselves right at the entrance into the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best known and most notorious owner - Erazem of Predjama. The legend about the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his which helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year.

The karst world with its cave system provides a perfect backdrop for the castle, as well as a hidden passageway into freedom, a source of drinking water, an additional shelter and a space for storing food – everything that turned out to be indispensable, invaluable and crucial during the siege.

Miller’s trade is one of the oldest activities the human race has been involved in, which comes as no surprise as flour has since the ancient times been one of the staples for a number of foodstuffs. By learning about the history of mills and the miller’s trade one also gets familiar with the development of the technical knowledge, the control over nature and thereby the exploitation of natural resources.

A stroll around the castle provides an insight into the daily life in the Middle Ages. Inside its five storeys, the castle offers just about everything: a dining room, a knight room, soldiers’ and servants’ quarters, as well as a torture chamber and a dungeon. The position of the castle boasts a wonderful view of the Lokva River valley, while a network of passages behind the castle takes visitors into the karst world. However, the former use of individual rooms is not the only thing that the castle has to offer to the visitors. A special position and the building technique of the castle are clearly visible throughout the walk around the castle. Its entire rear side is bedrock onto which the castle is leaning. It has been built in such a splendid way that it is difficult to say where the natural wall ends and where the constructed one starts. This duality of natural and man-made features is just as inspiring as the history of many centuries and the charming and romantic legend about the knight Erazem.

PIvka and bLaCk CaveThe Pivka Cave and the Black Cave are the final two caves along the subterranean Pivka River before the river finally disappears and resurfaces in the Planina Cave. Both caves are beautiful examples of caves along a subterranean river above which ceiling has collapsed.

The entrance into the Black Cave is only gently sloped while the Pivka Cave entrance has vertical walls. The Black Cave features beautiful flowstone formations and the biggest attraction of the Pivka Cave is a stunning view of the river, especially when the water level is high. In the early 1920s, an artificial passage was built to link three caves: Postojna Cave, Pivka Cave and Black Cave, thus facilitating access from one to another, primarily for military use rather than for tourist purposes. Nowadays an artificial tunnel allows visitors a special experience - visiting three caves at the same time.

The viewing area at the entrance of the Pivka Cave offers a wonderful view of the enormous 65-metre deep collapse shaft, with the underground river Pivka flowing at the bottom. There are 317 steps leading down the abyss. The path through the cave leads upstream and is cut into the right bank of the river bed. A large number of special cave formations are visible in Pivka and Black Cave. As a result of difficult access, the Pivka Cave remained practically unexplored until 1855. On the high ceiling we can observe grey out-turned stalactites. Also visible is the fault that led to the enormous collapse, opening a window to the surface. Tours take place on foot, the exit is through the Black Cave.

Cave Under PredjaMa CastLeThe network of cave passages in Predjama is more than 14 km in length; the passages also cover the area both under and behind the castle, and through a hidden passageway that leads from the castle into the free world they stretch above the castle as well. Although the cave is a branched and long one, only the 700-metre long section closest to the entrance is open for regular visitor tours. The cave is inhabited by various different species of bats, which make each cave visit even more special. Since the care for the bats is of particular importance, it is necessary for the cave to be left to the bats only during their hibernation period, and the cave is during the winter months therefore closed for visitors.

The area of the cave closest to the entrance was in the Middle Ages used as a horse stable and this still gives it its present-day name. But this cave section had been used even a long time before that – it is namely an important archaeological site, which dates back to the Stone Age.

No electric lighting is provided inside the cave, but the battery-powered lights give each visit a special charm. The darkness, which otherwise dominates the cave environment, gives way to visitors’ lights only, and thus enables them to explore the cave passages on their own. A colony of bats that stays inside the cave during all seasons, including the summer, gives visitors an insight into the life in complete darkness, which all cave-dwelling flora and fauna needs to submit to unconditionally.

The length of all parts of the cave that have been discovered so far is 14 km. The part of the cave that has been set up for tourists is 700 metres long and encompasses the Stable, the Main Passage, the Passage of Names, the Great Hall and Fiženca, where the exit to the surface is located.

There are approximately 250 steps inside the cave, but stops are made along the way, which makes walking around a lot easier. Children are only allowed to enter the cave if accompanied by an adult.

During the time when tours of the Postojna Cave were still done on foot only, the Small Caves were part of regular tours. The walls of the Small Caves are richly calcified, the most outstanding formation of all being the Gothic Column. There are cave pearls - small flowstone balls that reach about the size of marbles - lying around the cave floor.

In the period between the First and the Second World Wars, when the territory of Postojna was part of Italy, three caves within the Postojna Cave System were connected by means of artificial passages: the Postojna, Black and Pivka Caves. The construction of artificial passages was a military project and according to the plan, which was eventually not carried out, the tunnel was supposed to continue from the Pivka Cave into the Planina Cave, whose exit was located exactly on the Italian-Yugoslav border. The artificial passage makes it possible to get from one cave into the other easily, which gives visitors an opportunity to get to know the grandeur of the Postojna Cave System.

All the details of the intertwined network of the Postojna Cave System can be seen best as part of a proper caving tour which takes between 4 and 6 hours. The extended tour around the cave is of medium difficulty level and is not suitable for children younger than 15 years. Guided tours are organized for groups of 3 to 10 people. Suitable caving equipment is required for the tour, its hire is however included in the price. Warm clothing is recommended.

otok Cave

Four hundred metres past the Lower Tartar, the Pivka reaches the lower sections of Otok Cave. The large and once richly-calcified passages are a continuation of the Upper Tartar, although the link between the two is now broken due to collapses. The level of the river is a good 20 metres below the bottom of the dry passages in Otok Cave. The Cave can also be entered from the surface at the end of a blind valley that opens towards the Pivka Basin. The cave entrance, initially buried, was uncovered by the villagers of Veliki Otok in 1889, hence its name.

Otok Cave is a dry, horizontal cave with many speleothems. It is linked to other caves through passages of the subterranean Pivka River. The cave is not fitted with electric lighting, but the path through it is well marked and no special equipment is needed, except torches. Owing to its unique beauty, Otok Cave has in the past often been the location of film productions by both Slovene and foreign filmmakers.

A motivational introduction about the origin of the karst world, which takes place in Vivarium Proteus, is followed by an intense hike through the Postojna Cave, the Black Cave and the Pivka Cave, from where pupils return to the surface, trek through a forest above the Postojna Cave and get back to the starting point. Pivka Cave is known as fabulous water cave, where you can see how the river Pivka disappears. Students will discover the underground world of the tourist and non tourist part of the cave, life in eternal darkness and the rich history of the most famous limestone cave in the world.

vIvarIUM and Postojna Cave

Before taking a tour of the Postojna Cave, you are recommended to visit Vivarium Proteus, where a motivational introduction about the origin of the karst world will make you familiar with characteristics of karst phenomena and life in complete darkness. It is a great opportunity to discover cave flora and fauna and learn more about different species of cave animals.
