Dear Children and Parents,

Power of Poetry – Nursery to Year 6

Our Power of Poetry weeks (POP) will start on Monday 16th October in the Primary School. All of the children will spend this period studying well known poems, poetry authors, writing poems and creating art work inspired by poems. The theme that will inspire our poems this year is ‘Harvest’. We are all getting excited about the forthcoming POP activities!

Last Friday the Senior School celebrated the annual European Day of Languages. This year we centred our efforts around the upcoming extended curriculum residentials in March 2018 with cultural and linguistic activities to better prepare us. At break time, students sold EDL-inspired biscuits and cakes they had made and brought from home. The money they collected went to charity

“I learned about Gaudi and his beautiful creations: Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell.” SARA PODDA (7B) “EDL Day was fun. I learnt to talk Spanish - ¡Hola!” LORJAH NORVILUS (7B) "I like selling the cakes and giving the money to Charity" SERGIO CASERTANO (7K) "I liked learning a little bit of Spanish" GABRIELE MILLI (7K)

Ilone Netten. Written by Carlotta Bakke & Nurse Lanny

“The Dutch workshop was very interesting and gave us a lot of information about our trip!” VALERIO PEPE (8S) This year, in my opinion, EDL has been very enjoyable. We learned some Dutch and a little about Anne Frank. TOMMASO PALAMENGA (8S)

“EDL was amazing: we got to discover many facts about France and recreate a real French café as we learnt about some great intellectually.” ELENA MALAFRONTE & SOFIA CASTELLUCCI “EDL is always one of my favourite days. We made posters about Paris because we are going there in March. I look forward to all the fantastic experiences we will have.” RACHELE TALEVI

ENGLAND (Year 10) Year 10 followed the introduction of their London trip and a language session on Cockney rhyming slang with Ms Botwick. Mrs Smith held a café littéraire on the supernatural in English literature, which was served with tea and English biscuits. “EDL day is an extremely important day because it allows us to enhance our perceptions on the variety of culture.” MATTEO SIMONINI & BACHIR DIALLO “EDL was a brilliant day, we enjoyed learning cockney, talking about our London trip, and the theatre shows we will see.” FRANCESO SINERCHIA & MARTINA COSTANTINI

“We, in Year 11, are going to Berlin, and we studied German. 感谢这节特殊的中文课以及三位老师,让我们对中文有了初

步的理解,比如说在中文里有26个字母就像英文一样,但是

在中文拼音里有23个声母以及39个韵母。每个韵母都有四

种声调;一个声母和一个韵母可以组成一个拼音。

在这些基础的拼音之后就是简单的交流方式,从最初的问候

方式到简单的自我介绍,还有最后的便捷的交流方式——询

问价钱以及回应方式,最后希望这节中文课对我们同学有帮

助。Written by Angelo Jiang & Cristian Wang

“I personally found the lesson very interesting and the fact that the teachers always kept active the students throughout the lesson avoided boredom. I learnt many things, such as how to say thanks: "xièxiè" or how to say water: shui", which I will find very useful during our residential trip to China.” SERGIO KOTBI The lesson was most appreciated, and personally I enjoyed and managed to learn basic mandarin vocabulary. Thanks and best regards to the Confucio department of the university of Rome La Sapienza, Zàijiàn (Goodbye) MICHAEL COSTANTINI

A special 谢谢 , danke schön, and dank u wel must go to our external collaborators: the Chinese

AIBWSI 2nd IB DIPLOMA UNIVERSITY SUMMIT Year 11 to 13 students attended the second edition of the University Summit last Friday held at St. Stephen’s School The 2017 Summit was a collaborative event that aimed to establish a continuum in education under this year’s theme of ‘In defence of international mindedness.’

This was a unique opportunity for students to meet with some of the world’s most prestigious universities such as: Stanford University; The University of Cambridge; The University of Pennsylvania; City University London; Wellesley College; King’s College London; University of London; University of East Anglia; University of British Colombia; University of Groningen; Goldsmiths, University of London, IE University Madrid, Bocconi University Milan.

“It was a privilege to go to attend the summit because I got the opportunity to listen to many different University reps such as Bocconi University in Milan which engaged me the most, since my preference is staying in Europe. In addition there were other foreign universities with whom I discussed the various things they offer. This experience really helped me by giving me lots of advice and things to think about before I apply for my university choices.” Flaminia Aragno (Yr. 12)

“After attending the university summit, I managed to learn more about the structure of my letter of application and what universities look for in a student. I now consider the importance of being a holistic student and my personal grades both which go towards shaping my future.” Michael Costantini (Yr. 12) “The IB summit last Friday was a very interesting experience. We have had the chance to listen to experts' advice and to talk directly to prestigious universities such as Stanford. It was Great!” GianLuca Y13:

“The IB summit was a great opportunity. I discovered a course in Rome that I didn't know existed. Therefore, I really enjoyed the university summit!” Urte Eitminaiviciute Y13:

“The IB summit was a great chance for us to know what different universities are looking for and the importance of predicted grades as a conditional offer. We also had a chance to appreciate what different universities around the world require whether focusing purely on academic grades or personal statement and references.” Ahmed AbdelgadirY13:

World Class Music Event On Wednesday 11th October, our fantastic Year Nine Students were entertained by World-Class

clarinetist, Dr Eloise Fisher. Dr Fisher is the award winner of prizes from countless prestigious

tournaments such as the Beijing International Music

Competition, Australian Music Foundation in London and the

International Competition of UFAM in Paris. Her doctorate in

Musical Arts was awarded by the world famous Julliard School

of Music in New York! Dr Fisher chose three unique pieces to

perform, including Gershwin's 'It Ain't Necessarily So' from his

Opera 'Porgy and Bess'. The students were intrigued by the

contrasting pieces from post-modern to traditional Spanish

melodies. Students were brimming over with questions

concerning clarinet technique, history, genres and

inspirations.

The Music lesson wasn't simply a performance containing a question and answer session, it was also

a platform from which our Year 9 students could witness a Master Class. Tiziano Pepe from Year 6H,

confidently performed in front of the class whilst being coached by Dr Fisher. The whole group

witnessed the benefits of one to one 'Master Class' musical tutoring and saw how Tiziano's chosen

piece was embellished and perfected following the coaching of Dr Fisher.

Dr Fisher brought several kinds of clarinet to the lesson and

covered the various parts of the clarinet such as the

mouthpiece, barrel joint, upper joint, keys, lower joint and

bell joint. She also demonstrated various styles and

techniques of playing including classical, jazz, and

traditional themes

pertaining to specific

countries and

cultures. She

certainly proved that the clarinet is the orchestra's most

versatile woodwind instrument because of its wide range. Dr

Fisher finished the session with a favourite piece of mine called

'Tico Tico', which is a bright Samba with words and music by

Zequinha Abreu, Aloysio Oliveira and Ervin Drake, leaving the

whole class utterly spell-bound. Her final message was one of

great hope. Never give up with practice in any subject. Whatever it is you wish to be good at, put in

the hard effort and time because in the end it will make y ou a better person. What a wonderful hour

of Music and Education! Thank you to Dr Fisher, Mrs Moretti and Mrs Thorp (also present), Tiziano

Pepe for his excellent and confident performance, and last, but by no means least, Year Nine students

for their excellent attendance, attention, behaviour, higher-level questioning and enthusiasm

throughout. I would also like to thank Mrs Webster for arranging the transport for the visit. For more

information on Dr Fisher please visit her website. More Musical Educational Visits are in the pipeline

including the difference between Viola and Violin and Rock Guitar. These sessions will be provided

by a real life Italian brother and sister who are students of the Corelli Association - so stay tuned!

Golf Challenge Final It was a pleasure to accompany the students pictured below to the Acquasanta Golf Club last Friday. The children enjoyed a picnic lunch follow by a coaching session. They then tried their hand on the driving range and the putting green. The children were a credit to the school. My thanks go to Mr Beretta, Mrs Luana, Ms Rosito, Mr Pulidori and Mr Thompson as well as to the coaches and staff at the Acquasanta Golf Club.

Gymnastics in Year 5 Students were able to film their classmates performing their gymnastics routines. They were then able to show others their performance and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Mr Butler & Miss Vaughan Year 5 Class Teachers

Wheels Day in Reception The Reception children had a FUNTASTIC Wheels Day. They looked very carefully at the traffic

signals and behaved in such an exemplary way that the very strict traffic warden had no need to

give verbal warnings or fines. We saw some very good 'drivers of tomorrow'! A big thank-you needs

to go to Mr Lorenzo for setting up our circuit and to Mr Alin for tidying up after we had finished.

Year 3 – Dentist’s Visit As part of our Science unit 'Healthy Eating and Teeth' Year 3 were very

lucky to have a special visit from a dentist.

Mrs Podda and her daughter, Rachele,

very kindly came in to talk to the children

about their teeth and the importance of

oral hygiene. Children listened attentively

and now, thanks to the ladies, they will be

able to brush up on their teeth knowledge

in class and at home!

Paddington Krish (Year 2P) had a fantastic weekend with

Paddington. We can see them both in this picture

making a healthy eating choice.

Book Orders – Baker Books One of the important aspects of reading at home is that children enjoy what they read. Enjoying books helps children develop their reading ability and builds the reading habit. For this reason, we continue in our long lasting tradition with Baker Books. Browse through the catalogues and order the books online. Kindly note that the last effective date to purchase your Baker Books via the online process is 20th

October. We expect to receive the books in early November when they will be delivered to your child

via the Class Teacher.

Classrooms after 3.25pm

We kindly ask for your co-operation in ensuring that children do not enter classrooms after the end of the school day or play near those areas. Several lessons including Elementare and Media courses take place and it is important that noise levels are kept to a minimum.

We count on your assistance in this regard in order to ensure that equipment and personal items are not damaged or inadvertently misplaced. In addition, the cleaning staff commence their duties in several areas of the school after 3.45pm.

Lost Items and Clothing With the change of season, cool weather in the morning and warmer temperatures at midday, it is common for the children to remove cardigans or sweaters during morning and lunchtime recreation and consequently clothing is sometimes inadvertently swapped or misplaced. We kindly ask for your help in returning any items that do not belong to your child so that we may reunite them with their rightful owner. This may be achieved quickly and with less waste of time if all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Your co-operation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Lost & Misplaced Items

We kindly remind parents to label all student's items, including clothes and school bags. Any items left on grounds will be collected by our maintenance staff and placed in the Lost Property box located near the pink court. These items can be collected the following day.

Morning Breakfast & Homework Club

Morning Breakfast 7.30 - 8.50 a.m. & Homework Club 3.45 - 4.45 p.m.
