The lesson I use to illustrate the program PowerPoint involves the students

creating a 15 slide story with characters, setting, and a plot. The project takes

approximately 7 to 8 weeks to complete. The project allows for the student to

learn and implement several aspects of technology. Initially, the students need

to fill out the basic elements of their story (i.e.: Who, What, Where, When,

How/Why). From these ideas, the student begins to create and draw their story

characters in Paint. Because the attributes of the Paint program are not all that

user friendly, the students are directed to copy their individual drawings and

paste them into Microsoft Word. Word allows the user to format the picture

permitting resizing, cropping, and the like to assist in their story idea(s) creation.

After saving the item in Word, the students can then begin putting together their

story PowerPoint.

Each slide is required to have movable pictures so that custom animation can

be applied. Each slide is also to have its own slide transition, as well as

sentences, typed in the NOTES area of what is occurring in the story on that

particular slide. The individual settings for each slide can be designed through

the use of finding an appropriate image on the Internet. PowerPoint allows for

pictures to be turned into the background of a slide. The students are also

encouraged to employ the AutoShape features from the Drawing Toolbar, clipart,

and Word Art. After all slides are created, the students then employ the

rehearsed timing feature which times each slide according to how long the

student needs the slide to appear. The time matches the need for explaining the

particular scene or part of the story. This is necessary as each student then

presents their story slide show using a Smart Board.

This project in PowerPoint makes a positive impact on student learning for

several reasons. First it allows for personal growth in creation. The tools in

PowerPoint are easy to use and apply. All Microsoft products are Word based in

that editing is very similar and familiar. Secondly, it allows for students to

understand the different properties of technology for individual use. Additionally,

the students learn how to incorporate them to be used together with others.

Lastly, it integrates English skills into technology. This reinforces the need for

good communication; and it does assist students to increase their motivation in

doing their best work since it will be presented publicly. PowerPoint is a great

educational tool to use when creating a detailed and eye-catching presentation.

It has been my experience in teaching with PowerPoint for parents to see

their child’s work. The awe of what was created is always wonderful to see. It is

easy to email the student work home to the parents. Because PowerPoint is a

user-friendly tool, I have even ended up assisting a few parents on presentations

they were creating for professional purposes.
