INTRODUCTION

Intel worlds largest chipmaker and leading

computer manufacturer, officially launched

an innovative PC known as community PC . It is designed to meet the needs of people in

rural India.

The community PC was tested in 36 locationsin 14 states across India.

For the effective implementation of this

community PC program, Intel started another

program called Jaagruti, under which thecommunity pcs were developed in internet

kiosk common in Indian villages with the

support of businesses, government,

Educational institutions, online services andISP.

Aims of Intels world ahead Program

Accessibility: creating opportunities for widespreadownership and share access of PCs through affordability,access and content, including the development of fully

featured, affordable PCs tailor to regional needs. Connectivity: Expanding wireless Broadband Internet

access by cultivating the required ecosystem andencouraging deployment, including the broad promotion

ofWimax traits and deployment. Education: preparing student for the global economy,

through education programs and resources, includingprofessional development to teachers worldwide.

Community PC Suiting Rural

Indias needs

Low power consumption: it developed anultra low power processor for ultra low power

processor for the ultra portable notebooks to

reduce the power consumption by shuttingdown the computer when not in use.

Ruggedized Chassis: The ruggedized chassiswas designed to withstand dust, varying and

high humidity conditions in villages.

Access Control: further to make PC attractive

to lenders and Banks, the platform was

installed with a certificate based access,which allowed banks to verify the validity of

installment payments against the purchase of

the PCs.

Jaagruti (The Awakening)

In March 2006 itself, Intel launch another

program, by name Jagruti (Awakening) as

part of of the discover the PC initiative. The program based on the community PC

platform , was in collaboration with leaders in

Business, government and education to

support the spread of internet kiosk in ruralareas across the country.

Challenges

For instance, Computer literacy was was very

low . The ratio of owning a PC to a television

was 1:4. this was because people were awareof the purpose and usage of a television

more than a PC.

Another Roadblock was the diversity of

languages used in India.
