• Oprah winfrey is an American media proprietor, talkshow host, actress, producer and philanthropist.

• Winfrey is best known for her self-titled, multi-award-winning talk show, which has become the highest-ratedprogram of its kind in history and was nationallysyndicated from 1986 to 2011.

• She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist inAmerican history, and was for a time the world'sonly black billionaire. She is also, according to someassessments, the most influential woman in the world.

• In 1983, Winfrey relocated to Chicago to

host WLS-TV's low-rated half-hour morningtalk show, AM Chicago. The first episode airedon January 2, 1984. Within months afterWinfrey took over, the show went from lastplace in the ratings to overtaking Donahue asthe highest rated talk show in Chicago.
