Greetings from Scotland ........ 6
Workshops on 8. PPM ............. 6
It was a very successful autumn for the Czech quilters, full of exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad. A lot of questions about the next year of Prague Patchwork Meeting have been asked and I am delighted to announce that once again, we will be able to present beautiful col-lections from leading European authors and their workshops. I am really looking forward to the Czech „response“ within the numerous challenges, galleries and within the general exhibition. We will be introducing the quilters and quilting groups in the following newsletter issues, but I would like to use this opportunity to point out the most important ones. Quilters Guild of the British Isles will be bringing an extensive collection to Prague – a comprehensive profile of the British patchwork and art quilt, spread over three themes: contem-porary quilts, traditional patchwork and miniatures. Another European country that will be rep-resented during PPM is Denmark that will be presenting a selection of the national quilting. The contemporary quilt will be present via a collection from Romania and the works by Britta Ankenbauer and Uta Lenk (both Germany). Another major group ABC Quilts, grouping au-thors from Germany and Benelux, will present 52 framed quilts. Small formats, in this case A4 format quilts will be once against brought by Gudrun Heinz to Prague, following the display in Birmingham, we will be to admire the quilts dealing with the topic „Boredom“. An extraordi-nary collection will be presented by Pia Welsch and her team. I am sure that you will be amazed by the quilts that are accompanied by a two day workshop – first one in the history of PPM, which is a great opportunity for you to create a wonderful art top. A lot of attention is as usually drawn to the two international competitions – the topics are Mother Nature and Applications (conditions and details are to be found on www.praguepatchworkmeeting.com). We are sure that these will represent both a challenge and inspiration to all of us. Art Quilt Club CZ is working with LINEN as material for its 2014 col-lection. I am very happy that Czech collections have become a stable part of PPM with many Czech quilt-ers getting the chance to exhibit their quilts abroad or to participate in international projects. The collection „Bridges“ by Jana Haklová has been displayed in EPM this year and in April, PPM visitors will be able to see it. Jaroslava Grycová will be presenting her outstanding natural quilts. Finally, Věra Skočková will display her original quilts, accompanied by new quilts by i Irena Zemanová, Romana Černá, Helena Fikejzová and many others. I hope that a traditional patchwork gallery will be there as well. An area of at least 1,600 sqm will once again form the biggest shopping centre for patchwork, quilting and other textile techniques. Those interested in new techniques and materials have the opportunity to take part in one of the 11 workshops with total capaci-ty over 200 places. Having received an amazing feed-back last year, the fashion show and live announce-ment of the competition winners will be a part of PPM once again. signs and a wide variety of modern
techniques. The Contemporary Quilt group is a specialist group affiliated to
The Quilters Guild of the British Isles. It is an internet based group which has over
700 members including some very active contemporary and art quilters in Europe.
Every year the Traditional Quilt Group of the QGBI runs a challenge for its
members. The format is quite small so that it is manageable for any member who
wants to take part. The 2013 challenge was to make a quilt 12 inches wide and be-
tween 12 and 18 inches long, in the Suffragette colours: green (give), white
(women) and purple (or violet for votes). In 1913 one suffragette, Emily Wilding
Davison, died when she threw herself under the King’s horse at the Epsom Derby.
Her name has become part of our social history, but she was only one of countless
women who, not only in the UK, fought for the equality of women, often experienc-
ing hardship because of their commitment. 100 years later, we wanted to celebrate
these women whose impact on our lives today should never be forgotten, because
they gave us a voice and the right to vote.
The Contemporary Quilt GB
Group will be hanging their suc-
cessful exhibition, “CQ Horizons” in
Prague. These quilts were first ex-
hibited at the Festival of Quilts 2013
in Birmingham, UK and drew ac-
claim from thousands of NEC visi-
tors. CQ members were set a chal-
lenge for 2013 to make a quilt on
the theme, “Horizons”. All pieces
were the same size, 50cm wide and
150cm high. The interpretation of
the theme gave rise to a lovely vista
of bright and subtle colour schemes,

The Quilter’s Guild Specialist Miniature Quilt Group is a small group of 126 members
who love the challenge of making quilts in miniature. There are several members who win at
many of the exhibitions held in Great Britain and also at the International one we have here
in the UK - The Festival of Quilts, Birmingham. Each year we receive three newsletters ‘Small
Talk’ which are full of articles, photographs, exhibition reviews, tips and challenges, and this
year we are making a Mystery Quilt which is very exciting. In the past year, four of our re-
gions got together via the postal system and made Row or Round Robin Quilts which made a
beautiful display at The Festival of Quilts. Our Handbag Collection has about 40 members’
quilts in and can be borrowed by other quilt groups for their meetings or to include in their
own exhibitions. They are greatly admired for their small size.

ART QUILT E.V.
The group was founded in 2010 by 8 artists working in textiles, who met regularly for work and discussions and in 2012, the "Forum Art Quilt" became a registered society. The members come from the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany, and have been concerned with modern textile art for many years. They have visited workshops held by well-known artists, such as Els van Baarle, Jette Clover, Lin-da Colsh, Cherilyn Martin, and Claire Benn. They are members of the corresponding patchwork guilds in their owncountries and in SAQA. They hold regular exhibitions and participate in inter-national competitions in Europe and the USA. In addition to regular meetings (3-4 times per year), they communicate via a Yahoo Group. The society also has a homepage: www.forum-art-quilt.de and can be found on Facebook.
THE ART QUILT ABC PROJECT
Right from the very start, the group has concentrated
on art quilts with the aim of experimenting with inno-
vative materials and techniques. Enthusiastic bout the
quality and versatility about their work, the members
have started a project campaign "The ABC of Quilt
Art". Participants in the project are: from the Nether-
lands Riet Dorrestein, from Luxembourg Monique
Dostert, from Germany Juliette Eckel, Gabi Heimann,
Hildegard Mueller, Monika Neumann, Heike Rueeck
and Gabriele Voeller. Each artist designed at least 26
art quilts (30 x30 cm) from A to Z. Each of the works
is concerned with either an unusual material or an in-
novative technique. Numerous quilts were created in
less than two years. Motivated by the excellent results,
the group decided to present its works in 2012. In or-
der to win over other textile artists for the techniques
and materials they had used, a book containing 52
quilts was published: a manual on the subject of mod-
ern textile art, presented at the first at EPM 2012.
The total exhibition consisted of 234 works, each 30 x
30 cm, arranged in 3 x 3 blocks for each letter of the
alphabet. Each piece of work was mounted on wedge
frames and presented in alphabetical order. At 8th
PPM 52 pieces will be arranged. The "ABC of Quilt
Art" project has already been presented in Alsace, Bo-
chum, Brunswick, Aschaffenburg, the "TRAEFF 2013"
in the Herning Kongrescenter in Denmark and in
Velthoven Quilt Expo. In 2014 the society has been
invited to participate in the " 8th international Prague
Patchwork Meeting" in Prague and the "International
Quiltfestival in Wilwerwiltz" in Luxembourg.
GREETINGS FROM SCOTLAND SCOTTISH QUILT CHAMPIONSHIPS, EDINBURGH
I have made the quilt „Water and Earth“ for the exhibition in Fulnek in 2013. It has received two awards during that exhi-bition, the first place from the jury and the second place from the visitors. The success has encouraged me to include the quilt in the three quilts I have sent to the exhibition in Scotland. I have been planning to visit my daughter in Scotland and I just combined it with the exhibition. I was really surprised when I see an award next to my quilt, the jury has been amazed by the precision of the quilt. I believe that even very simple quilts can look amazing just by adding a bit of embroidery or a number of beads. The quilting show offered a large number of workshops, shops and a great chance to meet quilters from all over the world. Danuse Brezinova
