What is happening?Yes, another season of mounta in biking is almosthere. All of us here at the Dirt Series are excited thisseason, because we have more to offer. Then we willrun the casual riding sessions until the end of theriding season, just like last year.

What is it all about? It's a learn to ride program that teaches kids how toride mountain bike trails. Uphill, downhill, shifting... you name it, we have it. We also teach safety andtrail etiquette. If parents want to know more about it,just give me a call. My number will be at the end ofthese articles. Wiserider Program - The Co-operators Life InsuranceCompany

The Co-operators WiseRider Program came intoexistence in June, 1992, committed to inform, entertain, educate and enlighten both general andspecialized audiences about bicycling safety. This is a two part program.

This first par t of the program is, Can-Bikeinstructors go to schools in the Southern half ofthe province and give 1 hour safe cyclingpresentations to students. This is followed, ifspace and time allows, by a bike rodeo. Thisprogram is funded by the Co-operators andadministered by the Saskatchewan CyclingAssociation.

The second will be on June 14th, 2003. It is awhole day based around the theme of safecycling. It is an exceptional educationexperience, with tents housing safety educationexhibitors, bicycle safety inspection, and aneducation and entertainment amphitheatre, allfocussed primarily on bicycle safety and loss oflife prevention education. A highlight of the day,is the large rodeo sponsored the Sask CyclingAssoc, it includes railroad crossing lights, streetlights and even golf carts to simulate.

The SCA needs your help as a volunteer!

Are you available on June 14th? Could youvolunteer 4 hours of your time, either morning orafternoon to help at the rodeo? For volunteering, you will receive a WiseRider T-Shirt and all thehot dogs you can eat at WiseRider Day. Youalso receive the satisfaction of knowing you gavechildren valuable safe cycling information. If youcan volunteer your t ime, please call the office.

Riding the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic by Spurgeon Root

Now that the snow has fallen and the cold weather is here, Ifind myself thinking more often of the past ride season andlonging for the return of those glory days of summer. (Or atleast clear pavement and the option of riding outside withless than 50 lbs. of protective clothing). I also think of lastyears rides in an attempt to motivate myself onto the indoortrainer. So far this hasn t worked. It has, however, given methe option to reflect on a season with many great rides. Oneof the best was the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic in mid-July.

When I tell non-cyclists I rode a double century for mysummer vacation they look at me in confusion. When Iexplain to them what it is, they start recommendingpsychiatrists. Sometimes even other cyclists recommendthem.

The STP is a ride that has something for everyone. As longas riding 200 miles (320km) is something everyone wants todo. For the less motivated (or more mentally stable, depending on your viewpoin t) the ride can be done in twodays. For the more motivated (or less mentally stable, depending on your viewpoint) you can do it in one day. 6,844 cyclists rode the 2002 STP, with 1,356 opting for theone-day ride.

I saw just about every make of bike I d ever heard of and abunch I hadn t. I saw recumbents, tandems, a unicycle and agirl on rollerblades who I passed just after lunch & 176kminto the ride. She told me she wasn t sure if she was going togo all the way to Portland that day. A guy riding a singlespeed in sandals also passed me. I never saw again. The STP provides lots of opportunity to feel like a strongcyclist and lots of opportunity to be humbled. The fastest folks finished the ride in just over 8 hours. Most of ustook a little longer. I completed the ride in 14:45 and riders continued to roll in after me. The one day riders canstart at 4:45am and the finish line officially closes at 9:00pm, giving you 16:15 to ride the 320 km. I would highlyrecommend some long distance tra ining if you want to do the one-day ride.

The STP is not a race and has very much of a festival feeling to it. There are lots of places to stop and relax andsocial ize with one of the other riders if you are out for a leisurely ride for a couple of days. If you are in more of ahurry, for the first part of the day there are pace lines galore rushing from point to point, some of them holdingmore than 40kph. After 1:00pm there are fewer and fewer pace lines (at least where I was) although sometimesyou can find other riders who are going your pace.

I found the combination of heat and humidity to be a challenge. Proper hydration is a must as well as electrolytereplacement. I had some unpleasant cramping about 280km into the ride but I managed to finish. It seemed that Ineeded to drink more than I usually do over similar distances on the prairies, but I may have just had someproblems adjusting to the different weather conditions near the ocean. I have read material from other marathonriders that suggests Gatorade and other standard sports drinks are insufficient for electrolyte replacement on reallylong rides, something to keep in mind if you re planning on trying a double century or similar ride. Accelerade isa popular alternative.

The STP is bi lled as a fair ly flat course, which is basically tr ue. There are no really big or sustained climbs (maybetwo that would rival climbs out of a typical Saskatchewan valley) however, if you are used to riding inSaskatchewan this is not a flat course. It s more like a roller coaster. Not a really aggressive roller coaster, just areally long one. I managed to find an elevation graph for the ride and there s over 2200 vertical feet of totalelevation gain. It may be significantly more than that because a lot of the climbing occurs on very short steep hi lls,the type that Phi l Ligget once described as leg popping . Some endurance work on hills would be goodpreparation work for the STP.

I had a lot of fun on this ride and plan on returning to do it again. The course is beautiful, there are many places tostops for rests and the support is welcome and well organized. Just about any reasonable level of cycling fitnesscould complete the ride (in two days) or it could be a challenge to the most hardcore distance freak or speeddemon.

Ride To Help - September 6th and 7th

Ride To Help is organized to raise money for Zekafamily.Arben and Linda Zeka died in a house fire on 14th

Zeka family immigrated to Canada from Kosovo onlyseveral years ago. They aren' t financially established yetand they don't have any other family members they canrely on. That is why we are calling for you to help.

In addition to cycling events ther e is goin g to bea number of wild life tours and outdoor education classesoffered by SWF.

Adventure Poker Derby will be on a most challengingterrain we can find and it is intended to challenge XCriders' fitness and skills. As the riders go through thecourse they will hit 5 dealer stations where they willreceive their cards. The course will be all natural terrainand finish time will not matter. The race will finish whenthe last rider crosses the finish line. Upon the racecompletion the best hands will win.

Biker Cross will be a downhill race with man madeobstacles. It will be held on White Track Ski Hill. Two to

four racers will race against each other at the sametime and process of elimination will decide thewinner.

Saturday supper and Sunday breakfast wil l beprepared at the Lower Chalet by SWF. We will havea big tent, good music and a beer garden at the samelocation. Overnight camping will be provided.

We are asking each of participants to raise or donateat least $30 for Zeka family, there is no upper limitfor donations. Optional expenses will be meals andpark fees, the exact prices wil l be announced at laterdate. Non-SCA members who participate in PokerDerby or Biker Cross wil l have to purchase a one-day license for insurance purposes.
