Praying at Home GODS WORD FIRST READING From the prophet Zechariah The Lord says this: Rejoice heart and soul, daughter of Zion! Shout with gladness, daughter of Jerusalem! See now, your king comes to you; he is victorious, he is triumphant, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will banish chariots from Ephraim and horses from Jerusalem; the bow of war will be banished. He will proclaim peace for the nations. His empire shall stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth.PSALM R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God . I will give you glory, O God my King, I will bless your name for ever. I will bless you day after day and praise your name for ever. R. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. R. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God. R. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. R. knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’

Almighty and all-merciful God, lover of the human race, healer of all our wounds, in whom there is no shadow of death, save us in this time of crisis; grant wisdom and courage to our leaders; watch over all medical people as they tend the sick and work for a cure; stir in us a sense of solidarity beyond all isolation; if our doors are closed, let our hearts be open. SANCTIFYING SUNDAY

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

REFLECT FIRST READING

The prophet Zechariah envisioned a future king for the people of Israel who would rule the nations with justice and humility. How do you see these virtues as a strength in leadership?

SECOND READING

Paul speaks of the promise of the resurrection from the dead for believers who reject the flesh and live according to the Spirit. What spiritual exercises do you practice that help reject the flesh?

GOSPEL READING

Jesus praises his Father for the irony of the wise and learned who are unable to see what is revealed to the childlike. What does this tell us about the kingdom of heaven?

14TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME

Lesson in Patience

A mother and her two sons were heading to the church’s gathering space after Mass when the boys began arguing over who would be first in line to get a doughnut. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.

“If Jesus were here,” she told them, “he would say, ‘Let my brother go first. I can wait.’”

The younger boy turned to his brother and said, “You be Jesus.”

5 JULY 2020

Like us, the Missionaries of the Poor in Naga City have been placed, until recently, under a general quarantine. Only two weeks ago, they were able to reopen their Church to allow some locals to join the residents of their care facility for Mass. During this period, their Preschool has been closed. Nazareth Preschool offers free nursery and kindergarten education to children of impoverished families coming from the poorer areas of Naga City. The objective is to provide for them a solid foundation in education along with the fundamentals of our Christian faith which will help them navigate through life. Last school year, they were able to educate 133 pupils. Each year, their intake ranges from 120 to 200 students. For the 2020/2021 school year, they were hoping to reach 200 pupils. With COVID-19 disrupting everything, however, they have had to reduce the foreseeable numbers to accommodate the prescribed social distancing in schools. Apart from free education, the Missionaries of the Poor also provide free transportation to their students. Each day, they are picked up from their homes and dropped off later. Uniforms, books and stationery are all provided free of charge. Dental care is provided regularly, while morning and afternoon snacks are provided daily. A special nutrition program is also in place for some of the more malnourished pupils. Under the so-called General Community Quarantine, the Missionaries of the Poor are taking advantage of the summer season to do some refurbishing of the school. Among the works that

need to be done are the tiling of floors, replacement of windows, repainting, and construction of much needed tables, cabinets and dividers. They are hoping to get all of this done before the new school year opens. Thanks to the hard work of previous adult volunteers, who have continued to support the MOPs through activities such as our annual Charity Golf Day, our parish is in a position to fund this refurbishment project. This past week, I was able to empty the Missions Account and transfer funds to the Brothers for these works. I was also able to provide a small amount above that requested which was sent on the basis that it be used for the Kindergarten in providing scholarships for children and for the employment of staff.

The Pastor’s Pen It has definitely been a busy week. I spent most of Monday assisting Abergowrie College with live streaming the funeral service for Torres Weka, the residential supervisor who died in a car accident three weeks ago. It was a mammoth affair.

It was an honour on Tuesday to assist the Hall family with live streaming Ron’s funeral. Notwithstanding the fact that Deanna is a valued member of our parish community, as are all of our parishioners, Holy Trinity Anglican Church can only accommodate fewer than fifty people under government regulations. I have extended an invitation to Reverend Rosemary to use St Patrick’s Church on the occasion of any large funerals.

My heart goes out to all our families who are still struggling with numbers under regulation. While stadiums are now able to accommodate up to 50% of capacity or as many as 2500 spectators, we are still capped at a maximum of 100 people, even if we could accommodate over twice with moderate social distancing. More than a couple of family members this week have expressed the thought that it was probably easier when numbers were fixed at 20.

For all of our funeral families, we continue to offer the possibility of having their funerals live streamed. I know that those families who have availed themselves of this option are

deeply grateful.

I would like to thank those very fine men and women who have played the role of Usher these past few weeks. It has not been easy to explain to people the need to sit in sections of 20 and ensuring that each section was recorded on a single sign-in sheet. Thank you to those who have very patiently followed instructions. Hopefully, things will be easier in coming weeks.

It’s been lovely to see so many people back at mass. For those worried about numbers, do not fear! We have come nowhere near our limit. Saturday evening peaked at 75 people, so there is still plenty of room for more families at each Mass—you will not be turned away. I had the special delight of celebrating Mass with our community at Canossa last Sunday. This was my first visit to the home in three months. Fr V has gone there a couple of times for anointings (before and after lockdown). Their delight at celebrating Mass in the flesh was infectious. It definitely gave me a spiritual boost for the week. As of yet, we are not able to celebrate Mass with the Home and with family members and friends. As soon as we can, we will throw open the doors of the chapel.

A reminder that next weekend there are only the four Masses in Ingham. Only St Patrick’s can host up to 100 people, so we will have all four Masses there.

God bless,

“Your worth consists in what you are and not in what you have. What you are will show in what you do.” —Thomas Davidson
