Journal of Environmental Radioactivity 69 (2003) 1 www.elsevier.com/locate/jenvrad Preface to: 2001 : An Ocean Odyssey This Special Issue of the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity contains selected papers presented during the workshop on Isotopes as Tracers in Marine Environmen- tal Studies. The workshop was organized during the IAPSO (International Associ- ation for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans) – IABO (International Association for Biological Oceanography) International Congress – “2001 : An Ocean Odyssey”, held from 21-26 October 2001 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The papers cover various applications of radioactive and stable isotopes with corresponding techniques in mar- ine climatological studies, submarine groundwater discharge investigations, world- wide marine radioactivity studies, modelling the distribution of radionuclides in the water column and geochronological studies of contamination of marine sediments by non-radioactive pollutants. In publishing this special issue, we hope to stimulate further work in the field of marine radioactivity and applications of radioactive and stable isotopes as tracers in marine environmental studies. The guest editor would like to thank all the authors for their patience during the preparation of manuscripts, as well as scientific reviewers who anonymously donated their time and expertise to improve the scientific quality of the papers contained in this special issue.
