What is a preposition?

Prepositions show the position of a noun or pronoun in time or space.

The circle is below the caterpillar.

• A preposition shows the “position” of something in time or space (a location or place)

Time Space (not outer space, a location or place)

Prepositions in Space

• A preposition can tell the location of something

• The cake is on the table.

Preposition in space

• The pig is above the pyramid.

Preposition in space

• The fish are swimming under the water.

Preposition in space

• The climber is upon the mountain.

Preposition in space

• The bowl is near the eggs.

Prepositions in Time

Prepositions in time, show a position in time:

• During the movie, I fell asleep.

• Since I fell, my ankle has been sore.

• I won’t go to the store until 5:00 pm.
