PERSONAL PRESENTATION OF SOME OF
THE MOST IMPORTANT PROJECTS
WITH DESCRIPTION, TECHNICAL
DRAWINGS AND PICTURES
NICOSIA - CYPRUS
24 October 2013

1. Tradewinds - Gibraltar
Description of the project:
Apartment complex built by the Taylor Woodrow as a developer and PCG Group
Overseas Ltd as a main contractor. The project consisted in a group of three building
blocks of descending height, connected together by some link buildings of smaller
height.
3
Description of the systems:
1. Curtain Wall System - FW50 + and FW50 + SG from Schuco with mullions and
transoms. Curtain walls were calculated, manufactured and installed based on the
wind loads calculations on different parts of the building. The mullions started empty
at the ground floor, they received aluminium inserts at about 20m from the ground
level and they received steel inserts at the penthouse levels where the wind loads
were considered to be 2,5 KPa.

2. Sliding Doors Systems - V8 Special Series from Shuco. All doors were calculated for
the worst case scenario at the penthouse levels (2,5KPa) and then executed
identically troughout the building. Most interesting feature is a reinforcing Shark Fin
section to withstand deflection from high windloads. All doors were fitted with lift
and slide locking mechanism. Doors were also tested in UK at Taylor Woodrow testing
facilities for air and water tightness, impact resistance and windload resistance
(deflection).

4. Smoke Vents Tiptronic Windows SCHUCO AWS102 NI (Structural Glazing)
On the staircase of each building, calculations revealed that the last three floors
should have automatic smoke vents. The solution was to utilize four Schuco Tiptronic
Windows for each staricase floor (twelve in total). All windows were built with a
manual overide.

5. Glass Balustrade with custom extruded aluminium base profile - The system
consisted in a custom extruded aluminium base profile, calculated for the worst case
scenario for a wind load of 2,5 KPa and linear edge load of 1,5 KN/m.

2. NOUVEL TOWER – NICOSIA (Arch. Jean Nouvel)
Description of the project:
Apartments and office complex built by Nice Day Development Ltd as a developer
and Lois Builders Ltd as a main contractor. The project consisted in a 16 stories
building, with open habitable spaces. It is a mixed apartment and offices building, the
highest at this moment in Nicosia. Height of the building: 62m at the highest point.
19
On the last two floors there is a private residence penthouse, futuring a three
dimenssional curtain wall Schuco FW50+ SG, a roof swimming pool and terrace, all
surrounded by extra clear glass balustrade. Also the elevators shafts are ended with
extra clear spider glass construction. Everything is sun shaded with large solar control
aluminium louvers, installed on massive metal structures, with fixed blades,
calculated to provide shading only at specific time during the day, based on the
position of the sun in the sky.

Description of the systems:
1. Aluminium Windows System - Muskita MU2000 Series.
The building has 1250 windows in various combinations, either opening, fixed, clear
or sandblasted glass, exposed or hidden frame.
21
2. Aluminium Curved Sliding Doors - Schuco ASS50 Series.
On every floor on the North Elevation Balcony a special curved sliding door was
installed. Glasses and curved aluminum were ordered in Greece at requested size.

3. ANASTASI BUSINESS CENTRE – LIMASSOL
(Arch. Akis Charalambous Partnership)
Description of the project:
The building represents the business headquarters of the George Anastasi Ltd., a
development company, one of the members of PCG Overseas Ltd, which built the
Tradewinds Project in Gibraltar (1st
project of this presentation). The building frame
consists in self supported concrete slabs reinforced with pretension cables supported
by concrete columns. The facade cladding is a mix of concrete slabs and curtain walls
from SCHUCO. The windows of this project were Schuco Tiptronic AWS65. Brise
soleils were installed above each vision area and they were made using perforated
aluminium sheets from RMIG (Denmark). In the centre of the building a fire resistant
EI30 glass atrium was constructed. The atrium was completed at the roof level by a
metal structure skylight on which was installed a structural glazing curtain wall from
Schuco, with screen printed glasses from Saint Gobain.
At the ground floor level, the shop area was closed with a spider glass system
developed by MDE Austria with Eckelt – Saint Gobain: Lite Wall Mono.
The staircase area walls cladding was made with Aluminium Composite panels
installed on an aluminium RHS frame.
Description of the systems:
1. Spider Glass Lite Wall Mono by Eckelt – Saint Gobain Austria.
The system consists in a glass wall made by 16 mm tempered and laminated glasses,
held by stainless steel 316 spiders installed on some trapezoid shape supporting
structure made of steel tubes ø88.9x5mm.

2. Interior Atrium Fire Rated Glass EI45 by Vetrotech – Saint Gobain Austria.
The system consisted in installing a supporting structure made of steel at the edge of
each concrete slab, fire protected by means of intumescing paint. On top and under
these structures stainless steel channels to support the fire rated glass have been
installed. After the installation of the glasses, the steel structure was filled with high
density mineral wool and masked with aluminium sheets 3mm thick painted
RAL9007. Some ornamental trapezoid shape aluminium sections were installed to
create architectural shadow gaps.
Joints between glass were sealed with intumescing strips and then sealed with
weather resistant neutral silicone from DOW Corning.

4. FEDERAL BANK OF MIDDLE EAST – Nicosia
(Arch. Zembylas and Associates)
Description of the project:
The building destination is headquarters of the FBME Bank. The central points of the
design are the two spider glass curtain walls on the South and East elevations. The
building is surrounded at the top floor by a composite panel pergola with a metal
supporting structure. Directly under the pergola there is a continuous semi structural
curtain wall from MUSKITA (MU4200). On each corner of the building a corner curtain
wall from Schuco was installed. The rest of the building has stone cladding by Third
Party Company.
In the centre of the building there is a large atrium closed with fire rated glasses rated
EI30. The atrium is closed by a skylight (by others). On the roof, the ventilation and air
conditioning systems were contained by a fence made with Acoustic Lovers from
RENSON (445-86 system).
The architecture of the building features curved top windows, as per the architecture
of the area where the building was erected. The windows are AWS65 system from
Schuco, and the curvature of the aluminium was achieved through a third party
company in Greece. All the windows feature external venetian blinds from HELLA
Austria, controlled trough a smart house system.
At the first basement level, all doors and windows are bullet proof glass, SG1 and SG2
class.

1. Spider Glass Systems
The spider glass curtain walls are based on a simple and effective design. Massive RHS
structures, 300x100x8mm and 250x100x8mm are holding the spiders which in turn
hold the glasses. Design and structural calculation were performed by our
collaborators in Austria – MDE (Metal Design Engineering), the same designers for the
Tradewinds Gibraltar Project envelope. The wind load taken into consideration for
both curtain walls was 1,5 KPa. The connectors are marine grade stainless steel 316.
