Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

on behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you in Ancona (Italy) for the 8th

International RILEM Symposium SIB2015 on Testing and Characterization of Sustainable &

Innovative Bituminous Materials.

RILEM conferences on Bituminous Materials have been held every 6-7 years starting from 1968.

Following the success of the previous editions in Lyon (1997), Zurich (2003) and Rhodes (2009), in

2015 the conference is coming for the first time in Italy, hosted by Università Politecnica delle

Marche (UNIVPM) under the auspices of the Italian Society of Transportation Infrastructures

(SIIV).

The SIB2015 Symposium will be an invaluable opportunity to outline and clarify the main directions

of present and future research and standardization for bituminous materials and pavements.

The main objectives of the SIB2015 Symposium are to enhance the knowledge on sustainable and

innovative bituminous materials and promote international networking in development and

implementation of performance-oriented test methods.

More than 130 abstracts were submitted from all over the world and underwent a strict peer-review

process that led to 82 accepted papers, which are going to be presented during the conference

and included in the conference proceedings. Over 120 participants from 29 countries are going to

attend the conference, which will be a unique opportunity to discuss and explore the most

significant topics related to innovation and sustainability in asphalt industry according to the

corresponding session topics.

SIB2015 activities have been structured in 2 plenary sessions and 14 parallel technical sessions.

In the plenary session I (7th October), Rilem Lectures will be held by distinguished Rilem members,

Prof. Hervé Di Benedetto (Convenor of Cluster F “Bituminous Materials and Polymers”) and Prof.

Dr. Manfred N. Partl (Chairman of Rilem Technical Committee 237 SIB), whereas in the plenary

session II (8th October) there will be the contribution of the outstanding researcher Prof. Igor Emri

(Chair Professor of Mechanics at the University of Ljubljana and President of the Institute for

Sustainable Innovative Technologies) who will deliver its Keynote Lecture on themes related to the

time-dependent behavior of bituminous materials.

Pre-conference workshops have also been organized on activities of selected international young

researcher, warm recycling of asphalt mixtures and chemo-mechanical characterization of

bituminous materials (organized by Rilem TC 252-CMB).

The workshops represent a further invaluable occasion to promote a debate on ongoing

researches related to the above-mentioned specific topics and sharing experimental results among

researchers in order to enhance the knowledge on bituminous materials and pavements.

We hope that you will fully participate to the stimulating scientific sessions and the pleasant social

events also taking a chance to enjoy your stay in Italy.

About RILEM

RILEM is a volunteer organization grouping academics, researchers, testing laboratories,

suppliers, contractors with the aim to promote scientific cooperation in the area of construction

materials and structures.

In the field of bituminous materials RILEM activities are organised through Technical Committees

(TC) and, since late 1960s, brought to outstanding products such as guides to good practice,

recommendations and pre-standards, proceedings of symposia and workshops, state-of-the-art

reports, database and International Journals.

Since 1968 RILEM conferences and symposia have been a major source of state-of-the-art

information on bituminous materials and pavements

Workshop N. 2 Warm Recycling of Asphalt Mixtures

Chairman: F. Canestrari, Polytechnic University of Marche (Italy)

Nowadays, some of the major challenges that the asphalt industry is facing regard the demand of

sustainable paving mixtures and the increased costs of raw materials. Two widely recognized

solutions to address these challenges involve incorporation of Reclaimed Aggregates Pavement

(RAP) into new asphalt mixtures and reduction of the production temperatures by using Warm Mix

Asphalt (WMA) additives. Although several researches have been conducted on different WMA

mixtures, concerns still exist related to their performance mainly due to the reduced mixing

temperatures that may lead to incomplete drying of aggregates and insufficient coating with binder

that can result in failures of the adhesive bonding at the binder-aggregates interface and increased

water susceptibility.

Consequently, both short and long term performance can be affected due to the use of WMA

additives in asphalt mixtures. For this reason WMA mixtures need to be properly investigated in

order to evaluate the most appropriate WMA additive for each type of asphalt mix and their

feasibility, in particular when recycled mixtures are involved due to the presence of aged binder

within recycled aggregates.

The aim of the workshop is devoted to not only researchers and students at university level but

also to practitioners and decision makers providing an update on latest developments and

performance-based evaluations. It is believed that the contributions of the speakers will contribute

to a further leap toward sustainable applications of warm recycled asphalt mixtures and stimulate a

fruitful debate among the participants.

Workshop N. 3 Chemo-Mechanical Characterization of Bituminous Materials

Chairman: L. Poulikakos, EMPA (Switzerland)

Bituminous materials can have very different long term properties, depending on the one hand on

the source they come from and on the other the refining process (mechanical process) they were

produced with. Yet most of the research towards enhanced properties of bituminous materials is

split into separate efforts towards understanding its chemistry or its mechanics. Connecting these

two research fields into a joined chemo-mechanical understanding could lead to major

improvements in the material’s sustainability. Since the long term response of asphalt mixtures

under varying environmental (i.e. moisture, UV and oxygen) and mechanical (i.e. traffic) loading is

crucial, having a fundamental understanding of the combined chemo-mechanical properties can

greatly enhance the material’s sustainability and functionality. Thus, in developing chemo-

mechanical characterization techniques on the nano- and micro-scale, the material’s variability

from crude-source to crude-source and its sensitivity to temperature and humidity need to be taken

into consideration. This is the focus of Rilem TC 252 CMB and in this first work shop various

aspects of chemistry and mechanics of bituminous binders will be presented and discussed.
