Types of Positions

– Categorical (C): entering first post-graduate year to continue until completed all training required for specialty certification

– Preliminary (P): provides one/two years of pre-requisite training for entry into advanced positions in specialty programs. IM, Surgery, and Transitional programs commonly offer prelim positions.

– Advanced (A): begin in the year after Match in specialty programs that begin training after completion of one or more years of preliminary training.

2012 Main Match - Schedule of Dates• November 30, 2011 – Application Early Registration Deadline

Note: Applicants may register for $50 until 11:59 p.m. eastern time. After this deadline, applicants can register by paying an additional $50 late registration fee ($100 total fee) until February 22, 2012, when registration closes.

• January 15, 2012 - Rank order list entry begins at 12:00 Noon eastern time for applicants and programs.• January 31, 2012 - Quota change deadline

Programs must submit final information on quotas and withdrawals by 11:59 p.m. eastern time.• February 22, 2012 - Deadline for registration and ROL certification• Rank order list certification deadline

Applicants and programs must certify their rank order lists by 9:00 p.m. eastern time. • Withdraw deadline - Independent applicants who have accepted a position through another national matching

plan or by agreement outside the Matching Program must withdraw by 9:00 p.m. eastern time. • March 12, 2012 - Applicant matched and unmatched information posted to the Web site at 12:00 Noon eastern

time. Individual program results posted to the Website at 12:00 Noon eastern time. Locations of all unfilled positions released at 12:00 Noon eastern time ONLY to participants eligible for SOAP.

• March 13, 2012 – Programs with unfilled positions may start entering their SOAP preference lists at 11:30 am eastern time.

• March 14, 2012 – Programs with unfilled positions must finalize their first-round SOAP preference lists by 11:55 am eastern time. SOAP offer rounds begin at 12:00 Noon eastern time.

• March 15, 2012 – Third, fourth, and fifth SOAP offer rounds continue – Offers every three hours using same schedule.

• March 16, 2012 – MATCH DAY!! Match result are posted to the Web site at 1:00 pm eastern time. SOAP concludes at 5:00 pm eastern time.

• March 17, 2012 - Hospitals send letters of appointment to matched applicants after this date.

What is SOAP???Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program – • SOAP is a “managed” Scramble (Not a Second Match!) new for 2012 Match.

• Unfilled positions must be offered/accepted through the NRMP R3 System during Match Week. Offers will be made every three hours Wednesday – Friday of Match Week, and applicants will be able to receive multiple simultaneous offers.

• It is a series of offers by program:– Applicants express preferences by applying to programs.– Programs express preferences with lists of applicants.

• Applicants can receive multiple offers in any round.

• Positions offered/accepted during SOAP establish a binding commitment enforced by the Match Participation Agreement.

• Match Day has been moved from Thursday to Friday.

SOAP ResponsibilitiesEligible NRMP applicants:

• NRMP Agreement• Must be able to start July 1

Must use ERAS – no phone, fax, email

- Cannot have another individual/entity contact programs on applicant’s behalf

- Only accept positions through SOAP

• IMGs not certified by ECFMG will not have access to unfilled list

Ineligible NRMP applicants:

• Cannot participate in SOAP

• Can apply to non-Match-participating programs through former methods of contact

• Can apply to Match-participating programs after Match Week

Unfilled Programs:

• Must accept applications only through ERAS – no phone, fax, email

• Must fill positions using SOAP during Match Week

- Cannot offer positions to ineligible applicants outside of SOAP during Match Week

- Are not required to fill positions during Match Week

Additional SOAP Requirements:

If an applicant rejects an offer or allows an offer to expire, no further offers will be made to that applicant by the same program.

Once an applicant accepts an offer, the applicant will not be able to send additional applicationsvia ERAS.

Once a program has filled all of its positions through SOAP, applicants will be unable to sendapplications to that program via ERAS.

Offers extended by programs and accepted by applicants during the Match Week SupplementalOffer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) will create a binding commitment. Failure to honor thatcommitment or failure to adhere to SOAP policies will be a violation of the Match ParticipationAgreement.

Programs can opt out of SOAP, but cannot fill positions during Match Week

- Has the applicant been involved in an NRMP investigation?

• Keep information in R3 System up-to-date

A Successful Match…

• Follow the process for R3: (Applicant AND Program)

1. Registration (Update information, Agree to Match Agreement, Payment)

2. Ranking (Applicant and program submit ROL to NRMP – based on interviews)

• Cardinal rule: Neither must ask the other prior to the Match to

make a commitment on how each will be ranked

3. Results (Posted on Match Day at 1:00 pm Eastern)

Match Agreement - Highlights• Matches are binding. Applicants and programs must accept/offer the

matched position and enter training in good faith on the date specified in the contract.

• Matched applicants and programs cannot discuss, intervew for, or accept/offer a position for a concurrent year position without prior waiver approval from the NRMP.

• Applicants and programs are responsible for providing complete, timely, and accurate information during the interview process.

• Programs cannot request applicants to reveal ranking preferences, nor can programs require applicants to reveal the names or identities of programs to which they have or may apply.

NEW for 2013• “ALL-IN”

• Beginning with the 2013 Main Residency Match, any program that participates in the Match must register and attempt to fill all of its positions through the Match.

• Programs must place all positions in the Match or no positions in the

Match.

• There may be possible exceptions (combined clinical-research programs, IMGs with home country funding, mid-career specialty changes, off-cycle residents,

etc.) but more details will be forthcoming.
