Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 Designed by Sou Fujimoto 8 June – 20 October 2013

The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 is designed by multi award-winning Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the thirteenth and, at 41, the youngest architect to accept the invitation to design a temporary structure for the Serpentine Gallery. The most ambitious architectural programme of its kind worldwide, the Serpentine’s annual Pavilion commission is one of the most anticipated events on the cultural calendar. Past Pavilions have included designs by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei (2012), Frank Gehry (2008), Oscar Niemeyer (2003) and Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural structure in 2000. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important architects coming to prominence worldwide, Sou Fujimoto is the leading light of an exciting generation of architects who are re-inventing our relationship with the built environment. Inspired by organic structures, such as the forest, Fujimoto’s signature buildings inhabit a space between nature and artificiality. Fujimoto has completed the majority of his buildings in Japan, with commissions ranging from the domestic, such as Final Wooden House, T House and House N, to the institutional, such as the Musashino Art Museum and Library at Musashino Art University. Occupying some 357 square-metres of lawn in front of the Serpentine Gallery, Sou Fujimoto’s delicate, latticed structure of 20mm steel poles has a lightweight and semi-transparent appearance that allows it to blend, cloud-like, into the landscape against the classical backdrop of the Gallery’s colonnaded East wing. Designed as a flexible, multi-purpose social space – with a café run for the first time by Fortnum and Mason inside – visitors will be encouraged to enter and interact with the Pavilion in different ways throughout its four-month tenure in London's Kensington Gardens. Fujimoto is the third Japanese architect to accept the invitation to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, following Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito in 2002 and Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA in 2009. AECOM have provided engineering and technical design services for the Pavilion for 2013. David Glover, AECOM’s global chief executive for building engineering, has worked on the designs of many previous Pavilions.

Julia Peyton-Jones, Director, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery, said: “Art and architecture is always experienced within the context of nature at the Serpentine. Like the park that surrounds the Gallery, Sou Fujimoto’s extraordinary design for our new Pavilion inhabits a space between nature and artificiality. While the structure blends, cloud-like into its natural surroundings, the intricate matrix of interlinking grids suggests a digital aesthetic that resonates with our age. This harmonious combination of architecture, technology and nature makes it the perfect landmark for the Serpentine Gallery, for Kensington Gardens and for London this summer. We are thrilled with the result and hope everyone who can, will come and see it.” Describing his design concept, Sou Fujimoto said: “For the 2013 Pavilion I propose an architectural landscape: a transparent terrain that encourages people to interact with and explore the site in diverse ways. Within the pastoral context of Kensington Gardens, I envisage the vivid greenery of the surrounding plant life woven together with a constructed geometry. A new form of environment has been created, where the natural and the man-made merge; not solely architectural or solely natural, but a unique meeting of the two. The Pavilion is a delicate, three-dimensional structure; each unit comprises fine steel bars of 800 and 400 mm rectangles. It will form a semi-transparent, irregular canopy, simultaneously protecting visitors from the elements while allowing them to remain part of the landscape. The footprint of the structure will be 350 square-metres and the Pavilion will have two entrances. A series of stepped terraces will provide seating areas that will allow the Pavilion to be used as a flexible, multi-purpose social space. The delicate quality of the structure, enhanced by its semi-transparency, will create a geometric, cloud-like form, as if it were mist rising from the undulations of the park. From certain vantage points, the Pavilion will appear to merge with the classical structure of the Serpentine Gallery, with visitors suspended in space.” Notes to Editors Opening The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 designed by Sou Fujimoto will be open 8 June – 20 October 2013. Sou Fujimoto Born in Hokkaido in 1971, Sou Fujimoto is widely acknowledged as being one of the most important architects of his generation. After studying architecture at the Department of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo University, Sou Fujimoto established his practice in 2000. Sou Fujimoto has been awarded numerous prizes since 2000, including the Architectural Review Awards, which he received three years in a row from 2005 (as well as the Grand Prize in 2006). In 2008, he won the JIA (Japan Institute of Architects) Grand Prize for the Children’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre and the highest award at the World Architectural Festival for the Private House division. He was also selected as ‘Design Vanguard’ in Architecture Record. In 2009, Fujimoto won Wallpaper magazine’s Design Award and in 2010, he received the Spotlight: The Rice Design Alliance Prize. In 2012, Fujimoto was co-awarded the Golden Lion for National Participation at the Venice Architectural Biennale with Toyo Ito as commissioner, along with Kumiko Inui, Akihisa Hirata and Naoya Hatakeyama. Serpentine Gallery Pavilion Commission The Serpentine’s Pavilion commission, conceived in 2000 by Gallery Director Julia Peyton-Jones, has become an international site for architectural experimentation and has presented projects by some of the world’s greatest architects. Each Pavilion is sited on the Gallery’s lawn for three months and the immediacy of the commission – a maximum of six months from invitation to completion – provides a unique model worldwide. Attracting up to 300,000 visitors (Art Newspaper) annually it is one of the top ten most visited architectural and design exhibitions in the world. Serpentine Gallery Pavilion History The Pavilion architects to date are: Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, 2012; Peter Zumthor, 2011; Jean Nouvel, 2010; Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, SANAA, 2009; Frank Gehry, 2008; Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, 2007; Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup, 2006; Álvaro Siza

Architect’s Statement For the Serpentine Pavilion 2013, I have created a translucent architecture, a terrain that encourages people to explore the site in new and diverse ways. Within the pastoral context of Kensington Gardens, the vivid greenery surrounding the site merges with the constructed geometry of the Pavilion. A new form of environment has been created, where the natural and the man-made fuse. The inspiration for the design of the Pavilion was the concept that geometry and constructed forms could meld with the natural and the human. The fine, fragile grid creates a strong structural system that can expand to become a large cloud-like shape, combining strict order with softness. A simple cube, sized to the human body, is repeated to build a form that exists between the organic and the abstract, to create an ambiguous, soft-edged structure that will blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. The Serpentine Pavilion 2013 is a delicate, three-dimensional, latticed structure, each unit of which is composed of fine steel bars. It forms a semi-transparent, irregular shape, simultaneously protecting visitors from the elements while allowing them to remain part of the landscape. The depth of the grid at different locations will create thicker walls or thinner, transparent sections. The building’s footprint is 357 square metres and the gross internal area is 142 square metres. The Pavilion has two entrances, with a series of stepped terraces to provide integrated seating. The topography of the grid is a flexible, multi-purpose social space, where the walls, seating and roof are made of the same steel cubes. In this way, the organic structure of the Pavilion overall creates an adaptable terrain, encouraging visitors to create their own experience of the building. Whether attending an event or simply relaxing in the Park, each person is invited to find a singular, favourite space inside and around the Pavilion. By day, it will function as a space open to all visitors, with a café. The largest of the terraced areas can be used as an events space, while other terraces provide further spaces for visitors to inhabit and explore. From certain vantage points, the fragile cloud of the Pavilion appears to merge with the classical structure of the Serpentine Gallery, its visitors suspended in the space between architecture and nature. Fujimoto has completed the majority of his buildings in Japan, with commissions ranging from the domestic (such as Final Wooden House, T House or House N) to the institutional (such as the Musashino Art University Library at Tokyo University). Following on from his first built work, an occupational therapy building for Seidai Hospital, Fujimoto has produced a number of designs for healthcare institutions, including the Children’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center in Hokkaido. Part of a new generation of architects who are reinventing our relationship to the built environment, the work of Sou Fujimoto resists categorisation. The separation of private interior from public exterior spaces is constantly questioned by his interlocking, light weight, flexible designs. With this approach he creates forms that are committed to a playful interaction between user and space. Sou Fujimoto has been awarded numerous prizes since 2000, including the Architectural Review Awards, which he received three years in a row from 2005 (as well as the Grand Prize in 2006). In 2008, he won the JIA (Japan Institute of Architects) Grand Prize for the Children’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, and the highest award at the World Architectural Festival for the Private House division. About the Serpentine Gallery

Serpentine Gallery, London The Serpentine Gallery is one of the UK’s best-loved galleries for modern and contemporary art, and is the only publicly-funded, modern and contemporary art gallery in London to consistently maintain free admission. Since 1970, the Serpentine has gained an international reputation for excellence, presenting pioneering exhibitions of 1,600 artists, architects and designers in 43 years. The Gallery, a Grade II-listed former tea pavilion, underwent a major renovation in 1998 under the Patronage of Diana, Princess of Wales. Later this year, the Serpentine will open its new space, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. This innovative arts venue for the 21st century will be housed in the Grade II-listed artillery store formerly known as The Magazine, which is being renovated and extended by Pritzker-Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid. Providing London with a new cultural destination, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery is will be situated just a five-minute walk from the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. Named after Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler, whose foundation has made the project possible, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery will offer nearly 900 square metres of exhibition and social space. The adjoining extension will be used as a restaurant/café, creating a permanent architectural landmark in the heart of London.

It is our great pleasure to support Sou Fujimoto’s Pavilion as part of Serpentine Gallery’s annual Pavilion project. The Japan Foundation, as Japan’s principal agency for the promotion of Japanese culture overseas, has been a supporter of the Serpentine’s exciting and thought provoking projects by Japanese artists in the past such as Mariko Mori, Yoko Ono and Yayoi Kusama. This Pavilion project exemplifies once again the Serpentine’s progressiveness and we are thrilled to be part of it. www.jpf.org.uk

The Japan Society is the leading independent body in the United Kingdom dedicated to the enhancement of the British-Japanese relationship. It is a membership organization and UK charity with a strong focus on education. The Society is delighted to provide support for Family Day activities in the 2013 Pavilion by Sou Fujimoto.

Having made awards in 2002 for Toyo Ito and in 2009 for Kazuyo Sejima & Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation is again delighted to have given a grant to the Serpentine Gallery towards the commission of its 2013 Pavilion. This latest design by Sou Fujimoto is an exciting continuation of his experimental approach to architecture. Our grant goes towards the Serpentine’s education and outreach programme and to a special talk to be given by Fujimoto on the Pavilion’s opening night when he will discuss his working processes and the very particular Japanese influences behind the Pavilion’s design and concept.www.gbsf.org.uk Funded by
