Flame Arresters

F l a m e A r r e s t e r s

Amal specialises in the design, specification and manufacture of FlameArresters.

A Flame Arrester is a passive explosion protection device with no movingparts. The secret to the success of a Flame Arrester lies in the element design. The Amal element has a superior crimped metal design, which in sectionpresents a matrix of triangular passages or cells with guaranteed uniformity. All gases have a defined gap through which a flame will not pass, this is theMaximum Experimental Safe Gap (MESG). When a gas (or vapour) mixtureignites, the element matrix prevents further propagation by absorbing anddissipating heat from the burning gas (or vapour) on the incoming side of thearrester. As the flame enters the flame arrester element, the temperature isprogressively reduced. This results in the gas being cooled to below the pointwhere auto-ignition would otherwise occur when exiting the element.

In-Line (Gas and Vapours)Detonation (Unstable): For flames with supersonic speeds and shock wave.Deflagration: For flames with sub-sonic speeds.

In-Line (Liquid)Detonation: For use in filling and emptying lines on storage tanks.

Combination Flame Arresters/Relief ValvesA comprehensive range of Pressure/Vacuum Relief Valves is available to workin combination with the AMAL Flame Arresters to give added tank protection.

End-of-LineDeflagration: For flames with sub-sonic speeds. Can be supplied “Endurance burn proof”.

Amal are one of the few manufacturers who have theirown test facilities, where a customer’s actual pipeconfigurations or equipment can be tested in theirflame and explosion laboratory.

Computer-controlled test instrumentation is used tomeasure flame speeds and explosion pressures in testpipe-work. Amal’s engineers then utilise closed circuit

video equipment to accurately assess the performanceof differing types of Flame Arresters, in varyingsituations.

This impressive development and testing facility has thecapability and resources to test Flame Arresters inaccordance with all recognised standards.

When selecting the materials of construction for aFlame Arrester element, serious consideration shouldbe given to the corrosion characteristics of the gases.Amal manufacture elements from Stainless Steel 316L

as standard, and have the capability to produceelements from many commercially available materials, including Hastelloy®, Nickel, Monel® and Tantulum.

Amal provide Flame Arresters wherever apotentially flammable gas is being transported,or a flammable liquid is being stored. Here are a fewexamples of typical application areas:

• Thermal Oxidisers

• Vapour Recovery

• Oil and Gas Terminals

• Atmospheric and Low Pressure Storage Tanks

• Marine Terminal Storage and Loading Facilities

• Chemical and Petrochemical Plants

• Onshore and Offshore Oil and Gas

• Diesel Engines

• Gas Analysers and Calorimeters

• Coal Mines

• Vacuum Pumps

• Fans and Blowers

• Sewage and Waste Water Treatment

• Bio-fuel/Bio-gas

W hy C h o o s e a n A m a l F l a m e A r r e s t e r ?In a potentially hazardous environment, Amal hasthe most effective method of quenching flames ina pipeline. When a confined flammable gas orvapour ignites, the flame may travel along the pipeat alarming speeds, with potentially devastatingresults.Where there is potential for ignition, suitable measures need to be taken to ensure thatin the event of these materials igniting, damage toplant is minimised and threats to life areeliminated. The best solution is an Amal FlameArrester.

Amal has the technology, expertise and testingfacilities to offer Flame Arresters of the highestquality, with conclusive proof that a crimped metaldesign of triangular cells is the most effectivemethod of quenching potentially lethal ordestructive flames.

Amal make Flame Arresters that work for all gasgroups in the process industry, to EN12874 aswell as B, C and D to US National Electrical Code Article 500, because anything less could be disastrous!

Technical Expertise and FlexibilityAmal prides itself on extremely highstandards, from concept through to testingand manufacturing. A team of productdesigners and application engineers offerunrivalled expertise in the area of safetycritical technology. This team is on hand tosupport its many customers, around theworld, in their efforts to achieve optimumsafety levels.

Amal’s highly skilled engineers consistentlyoffer application specific products, carefullyassessing the customer’s specifications andparameters, resulting in a cost effective andquality solution.

Testing facilities are crucial to Amal’s highperformance products. Therefore Amalinvests in state-of-the-art technology, strivingto maintain their technological advantage.

With over 80 years experience in the FlameArresting industry Amal’s customers knowthat when the name Amal is on their FlameArrester, it is a sign of quality, a guarantee ofplant protection and a reassurance that theyhave a supplier that cares.

International StandardsAmal has become a name synonymouswith quality, and quality in the area offlame control must be assured. That iswhy Amal is certified to the highestinternational standard - ISO 9001: 2008 The quality system is also approved inaccordance with ATEX Directive94/9/EC.

In addition Amal Flame Arresters aredesigned, tested and certified to EN 12874in accordance with ATEX Directive 94/9/ECand have been tested and/or approved by:BS 7244: 1990, USCG, IMO, FTZU, PTB,BAM, PROCHEM, CSA, HSE, INERIS, GOST-Rand NEMCO. Amal Flame Arresters are alsodesigned and certified to the PressureEquipment Directive 97/23/EC.
