PRINCIPALS REPORT
Hello Everyone,
A reminder that our school’s Annual General Meeting will be held next Tuesday15th May at 6:00pm. As this is a public meeting all community members are invited to attend.
Next week the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3 and 5. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs.
Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.
Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the school. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed.
We wish these children the best of luck as they demonstrate their understandings through this nationwide assessment program. Below are some practical ideas for the parents of our year 3 and 5 students.
How to best support your child -
Ensure your child has a good night sleep Give them a solid healthy breakfast – but don’t overload them Provide healthy snacks and lunch on test days and plenty of water; Cut back on after school activities if your child is tired, but encourage fresh air and a
fun play outside
Kids pick up cues from us – so keep it low key. The test will cover normal classroom/curriculum work learnt over a period of time, so no extra tutoring or last minute studying is necessary;
Encourage your child, but don’t put any pressure on them - emphasise that this is just one of many tests they will have during their schooling, and is to help them learn better;
Most of all – reassure them that you are proud of them for meeting our expectation of ‘Do Your Best’.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS REPORT
Hello everyone,
There is a lot happening at Whittlesea Primary as we approach the halfway mark of the term. We continue to have a steady stream of fundraising money returned to the office each morning.
Thank you to all those families that have already returned the money they have raised. All money and unsold chocolates are due back to the office on Thursday 24 th May. If you would like to return your money/unsold chocolates earlier you are welcome to do so; we have families that are willing to take on additional sales.
In week 6, Whittlesea Primary School will celebrate ‘Education Week 2018’. This year’s theme is ‘The Arts’. Throughout the week, our clubs will take on ARTS themes. Next week I will publish the clubs timetable in my newsletter piece. You are also welcome to attend your child’s class during our OPEN MORNING on Thursday 24th May, between 9:15am and 10:00am to celebrate and join in the amazing activities that are being organised by the students and their teachers. As a final celebration on Friday 25th May, Mr Hoggins and I will be hosting a Whittlesea Primary’s ‘Got Talent’ show during both breaks. Any children interested in being part of the show can register their act with Mr Hoggins and myself from next Wednesday. If your child has a talent and they would like to perform, please encourage them to come and see us. Students can perform on their own or in a small group. Some ideas include;
Mime Play an instrument Sing Recite a
poem Dance Magic Comedy skit Circus trick
Finally, I would like to wish all the Mum’s, Grandma’s, Aunty’s and significant carers in our community a lovely Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend with your family

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS REPORT
AFLLast Friday our football team walked down to Walker Reserve for their first match of the season against St. Mary’s. The game was tight up until three quarter time, but we managed to outplay the opposition in the final quarter. It was great to see us working well as a team and showing great sportsmanship on the way to a 33 – 15 victory.
NETBALLWe made our way to St.Marys Catholic Primary School first the first match of the season.
The A team had been training well and it showed with our opening quarter performance, the girls started strongly. St.Marys countered and were trailing by 1 at quarter time. The second quarter was all St.Marys and they had a 1 goal lead at half time. It was more of the same in the third quarter but our girls fought hard in the last quarter and went down by four goals, 12-8.
The B team, this year playing as a mixed team, played really well and defeated St.Marys with a clean slate in defense, 9-0. It was strong performance by our team and great to see the boys involved.

SCHOOL CHAPLAIN REPORT
Things to Stop One morning recently, I made a schedule and clarified my thoughts and ideas on paper before proceeding. I was motivated by a meaningful pursuit. Those actions encapsulate my first three articles for the term, taken from life principles proposed by a clinical psychologist called Jordan Peterson. I like to test them against my own life and I hope you are doing the same at your end. Now that some good life habits may have been established, I will tackle Peterson’s directive to stop doing the things we know we should not be doing.
These things are very self-evident really. We know we should stop things that conflict with our vision for the future and how to live well. We can stop doing all those easy little things that we choose to do because the tasks we ought to be doing all seem too hard to start, too time consuming, or too expensive. Our bad choices bring bad stress into our lives and we miss many opportunities for growth and learning.
We must be willing to change. We can stop choosing to be fearful about the future and instead follow our dreams. We can stop procrastinating about doing all those things that are waiting to be done but never getting around to it. We can stop looking to others for happiness because true happiness can only come from within us. We can stop comparing. We can stop running from problems and instead face the path of challenge and resistance. We can focus on what we want to accomplish each day. Because all this relates to human nature, let us not beat ourselves up. What has to stop must stop.
