English- Exciting Writing W/C 8 th June 2020This week, we will be using the image below to write a descriptive piece of work. We have broken the steps down into separate tasks, which you could complete on separate days to space the work out. Task 1- Picture Brainstorm:Using the image, write down as many descriptive words or phrases you can think of. Think about the adjectives you can use to describe the picture and verbs (actions) to say what is happening. The words you choose will be from different word classes, depending on what you’re describing: adjectives, verbs, adverbs (for detail). You should also think about sounds: Boom go the bombs. You may then move onto becoming more specific: identify the nouns in the image and describe them, e.g.

Dark grey clouds are filled with sadness

Cries of fear

loud thunder

whirring jets fly high in the sky

Task 2- Sentence Tricks:Y5 and Y6 focus on building cohesion within our work. As part of building cohesion and to ensure that our work flows, our sentences vary in style and length, we use sentence tricks to help us. We have always used sentence tricks to make our writing better, which is why we’ve used them. We hope that by the time you are in secondary school/ by the end of primary school, this will be automatic.

See the example below for some inspiration. Look at how we use similes and adjectives to make our writing interesting. Try joining your sentences together.

Example:Loud, angry, fast- many rockets whizz through the air like bees buzzing angrily. Paris- which used to be a pretty, busy city- is a war zone. The clouds have turned grey and angry. People have left the streets because they are scared. Soldiers, tanks and jets have taken over.Continue…Now it’s your turn to write.
