Thisresearchseminar,basedintheUniversityArchivesatSeeleyMuddLibrary,willfocusonPrincetonUniversity’shistoricalconnectionstotheinstitutionofslavery.TheclasswillcontributetothenewPrincetonandSlaveryProjectwebsitethatdetailstheslaveholdingpracticesofPrinceton’sfaculty,trustees,andstudents;investigateshowfundsderivedfromslavelaborcontributedtotheearlygrowthoftheUniversity;examinesthewaysinwhichstudentsengagedsomeofthecentralintellectualandmoralissuessurroundingslavery;andlooksathowtheverysouthernorientationoftheUniversityshapedinstitutionalculture.Studentswillwriteshortresearchpiecesforthewebsite,andhelpexpanditstemporalfocustoincludeananalysisofPrincetoncultureinthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturies.

StudentswillalsoparticipateinthePrincetonandSlaverySymposiumandrelatedeventsNov.16-19,2017,byleadinghistoricalwalkingtoursofcampusandlive-bloggingthepublicevents.

CourseExpectations:

SeminarParticipation:30%Studentsareexpectedtoreadhomeworkassignmentspriortoclass,tobeactiveparticipantsinclassdiscussions,andtoengageinfocusedresearchduringthein-classworkshops.Attendanceismandatoryatallscheduledclasstimes.

Everystudentwillcreateawebsite“exhibition”relatingtosomeaspectofthePrincetonandSlaveryproject.Theexhibitionwillbeaminimumof1500-2000words,withappropriateimages,andwillfollowthescholarlyguidelinesofthePrincetonandSlaveryProjectwebsite.
