Later in this publication, there are some comments about the results of the recent survey of our parents from this fall. In that short article, I highlight some of the blessings and some of the challenges. There is no doubt that we do have challenges. Some of those challenges have to do with our curriculum or the way in which we teach. One area I didn’t mention in the article has to do with the relationships found here at MVL. A number of parents commented favorably about their children and our teachers here at MVL. Permit me to share parts of a few comments:

“The enthusiasm and dedication of the teachers is admirable.”

“The staff and faculty is top notch!”

“The teachers truly care about our children and give them love and respect.”

Those are just a few of the many positive comments that were shared through the survey. As principal, I hope and pray that our parents, students, friends and visitors can see the love that our teachers and staff daily exhibit for all to see. Our teachers and staff love their Lord and let their light shine each and every day. What a blessing it is that they hold our students in such high regard and want them to well in the classroom and in their cocurricular activities. It’s encouraging and gratifying to see others recognize what I get to see every day. I pray that it continues!

Call update: Mrs. Erin Laabs (helping out at Martin Luther College this year) was called to teach English. Mr. Eric Paulsen (Class of 1985 – MVL) was called to teach science and be our technology coordinator. Pray that God blesses their deliberations!

Open House and Registration We will be hosting our Open House and Registration event on the evening of Tuesday, March 20. That evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m., we will offer tours of our school, a session for parents and students on our mission, academics and activities, and an opportunity to register for the 2018-19 school year. Parents and students of incoming 9th –12th grade students are invited and encouraged to attend. More information will be shared with the eighth grade students of our association Lutheran elementary schools.

After Prom Fundraiser The Junior class is putting on a fundraiser for the After Prom Party this year. They are selling pizzas from Swany’s Pub in Courtland. There will be order forms in the school office, or you can find any Junior and order from them. Orders are due in by February 2nd.

Scrip News Because there is no school on February 16th, 19th, or 23rd, Scrip orders received on Monday, February 12th will not be delivered to students until Tuesday, February 20th and Scrip orders received on Monday, February 19th will not be delivered to students until Monday, February 26th. We will begin processing Scrip contributions in March so they can be applied to designated accounts, hopefully, during the month of April. Thank you for your continued support of the Scrip Program and of MVL.

Senior Photos Needed! The MVL yearbook needs your senior photo. Please re-serve good judgment for apparel and poses. The main focus of these pictures must be your face. It should be clearly visible (no sunglasses) and close enough to see (no far away shots). These photos do not need to be profes-sional photos. All photos are subject to review by the yearbook committee. The deadline for senior photos is March 30, 2018

How is MVL funded? You may often see the phrase, MVL, a Partnership for Christian Lives, making a difference for MVL families. This phrase was created in 2015 to clearly identify the three- part funding story by which we are able to carry out the mission of MVL, training students for Christian lives. The three sources of income are provided by the fol-lowing student tuition support from WELS/ELS association churches gifts from individuals who make MVL a priority in

their financial support of Christian ministries While it costs $10,500 each year to educate a student at MVL, tuition and association support cover $10,000 of that amount. This leaves a $500/student gap. Every $500 given to the MVL Partnership Fund completes the fund-ing story for one MVL student.

Parent Survey Follow-up Thank you to all the parents who participated in our sur-vey this fall. We had 113 respondents help us to improve our school by sharing their thoughts. Overall, the parents greatly appreciated the Christian education that we pro-vide at MVL and the Christ-centered environment found within these walls. Areas that need our attention had to do with individualizing instruction for all our students, counseling and career planning, assessing the amount of homework given, technology, providing a greater volume of support services for those students with identified needs and providing a variety of teaching strategies and learning activities. In the coming days, weeks and months, we will be addressing these areas – and others – and report back to the Board, our association delegates and you with the ways in which we’re going to continue to work to improve our school. Again, thank you for your input!!

Pike Driving School MVL is once again offering Driver’s Education classroom instruction during the after school hours from 3:15 – 5:15 p.m., beginning Tuesday, February 27. This program, offered by Pike Driving School of New Ulm, will run for three weeks through March 16. There is a sign up sheet and informational postcard in the office. Have your student pick one up for more information.

The Booster Club’s main mission is to raise funds to pur-chase non-budgeted items for all extracurricular pro-grams and athletic teams. Extracurricular Programs – Fall and Winter Drama, Jazz Band, Chargeliers, Art Club, Dance Team, Math Team, Knowledge Bowl, Winter Weightlifting, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Speech Team. Athletic Teams – Boys and Girls Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Track, Softball, and Baseball. If you have a student that participates in any of the teams or programs listed above, we are hoping that you will play your part in volunteering for a few of our concession stand shifts or fundraising activities. Without the financial support of the Booster Club, many of the items needed each year would not be available for these teams and pro-grams

The MVL Auction is coming up on Sunday, March 18th Plans for the auction are well under way. Historically, the Annual Booster Club Auction has raised money in support of co-curricular activities for MVL students. This year, 96% of the entire MVL student body participates in at least one co-curricular activity. The dollars raised at the Auction have prevented the need for fundraising activities, such as sell-ing magazines, cookie dough, or any of the other friends and family “will you buy” efforts. This year the Annual Booster Club Auction is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 18th. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m. and the Live Auction will begin at 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be available! Walking tacos and the famous MVL Food Service apple crisp will be available at 11:00. This is the largest Booster Club fundraising event for the entire school year. The proceeds of this event will help purchase the items on the Wish List. There will be new and fun items to show your support for the co-curricular programs. The Class baskets will be back! (the class who's basket brings in the largest bid will receive a pizza party) MVL is in need of many volunteers to be able to make this event a success. Volunteers are needed to assist with soliciting items for both the live and silent auction. Items solicited should be delivered to MVL by March 10th. Volunteers are also needed to set up and tear down, help with the food service, run the computers and help people check out their purchases. Please plan to attend and support our biggest fundraiser! Basketball Concession Workers Still Needed! We are still in need of many workers for basketball games. It’s a fun way to meet and get to know other MVL parents and students. If you are able to help with concessions please respond to the emails for SignUp.com and see what will work for you. You Don't Know Until You Go! Believe it or not, the month of February is one of the best times for MVL Juniors to visit the colleges that interest them. There are three vacation days this month that will allow students to visit college campuses and classrooms without having to worry about missing class time here at MVL. Another benefit to visiting at this time is that colleges are in session and this will enable visits with not only admissions counselors, but also professors and coaches. You may even be able to take advantage of attending a concert, lyceum, or basketball game to get a better feel for the atmosphere of the college. If February won't work for your schedule, check the MVL calendar for other convenient times when you can take a tour of your next school.

Triple A Award Magdala Diersen and John Niebuhr have been selected by Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School to receive the Triple A Award. Magdala and John will represent themselves and their school at the Minnesota State High School League's subsection level. The Triple A Award recognizes and honors high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts. The Triple A Award elevates academic standards and creates greater awareness of League-sponsored activities and their values. It also provides member schools with the opportunity to participate in a statewide program that supports, promotes and recognizes academic and co-curricular achievements.

Chargers & Coaches vs. Cancer The boys’ basketball team would like to thank all of you who assisted us in raising money for the American Can-cer Association’s battle against cancer. We collected $4600 from the Free Throw Challenge, $207 from the Memory Cards and about $300 on the 76 Second Bucket Challenge for a total of $5054.58. We are very thankful to everyone who helped us. We must continue to do all we can to defeat this disease that has touched each of us either directly or indirectly. I wish fundraisers like this were not needed, but if we continue to follow a healthier life style and researchers continue to work for a cure, we will defeat cancer!

Boys’ Basketball It’s been a real exciting season! There have been ups and downs, but our mind set has been very level headed and gritty. We are focused on improving our game while mak-ing a run at the conference and then a long run in the playoffs. Congratulations to Jake Kettner on being MVL’s 19th overall player to join the 1000 Point Club and the 12th boy to achieve this feat! There has been a lot of unselfishness shown over the last few games. In the game against St. Peter, we came one assist shy of tying the MVL record for most assists which is set at 31. We’ve been averaging 19.8 assists a game. This team has been fun to watch especially when they get going playing defense and passing that ball.

It’s hard to believe that we are over halfway done with the winter sports season. Our basketball teams are im-proving and readying themselves for their run in the playoffs in February. Your teams thank you for your sup-port! We hope you continue to come to the games, enjoy the Pep Band and the Dance Team, and cheer positively for our teams and not against our opponents or the offi-cials. Our fine arts teams are in full swing as well. Math Team is nearing the end of their season with two meets to go. Knowledge Bowl has one meet behind them and will con-tinue to compete and improve. The Speech Team will start meets in early February.
